Which automatic litter box to buy
We track 28 self-cleaning litter boxes. Our top pick is PETKIT Purobot Max 3 Automatic Cat Litter Box, scored 9.75/10. 24 of 28 with a listed plan status work with no subscription. Prices run $99.95 to $799.99, checked 10/14/2026.
The PETKIT Purobot Max 3 is the automatic litter box we'd point most one- to three-cat homes to: it scored highest on our five-point check among the boxes we can link to, costs $399.99 on sale at petkit.com against a $499.99 list price (10/09/2026), and carries PETKIT's 2-year US warranty. First year, before tax and litter: about $481. The catch is the record: it shipped in July 2026 and we read only 12 owner reviews. For a longer paper trail, read the Litter-Robot 4 entry; for a cat that refuses hoods, the Neakasa M1 Lite Plus.
PETKIT Purobot Max 3 (our top pick)
For one to three cats over 3.3 lb and a buyer who wants the 2-year warranty without an app lock-in. $399.99 sale, $499.99 list on petkit.com (10/09/2026). The top panel runs cleaning without the app; Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only. The manual (T4-3 V1.1, p.26) sets 3.3 to 22 lb and an 8.03 in entry; the 7 L bin is rated "up to 15 days" for one cat. What held it back: a noise figure printed twice, since PETKIT's product description says 35 dB and the FAQ on the same page says 45 dB (both still there on 10/14/2026), a review widget that pools Max 3 and PuraMax 2 reviews, and one owner saying the green sifter plate "is prone to bending and warping" (petkit.com, 09/26/2026). First year: about $481 before tax, counting N50 cartridges every 30 days but not bags; PETKIT's $29.99 pack is "5 rolls (20 pieces in one roll)," 100 bags (petkit.com, 10/14/2026), about $0.30 a bag. See our PETKIT review.
Neakasa M1 Lite Plus (runner-up)
For cats that will not enter a hooded globe, from 2.2 lb kittens to "around 33 lbs" in Neakasa's wording. $328.99 sale, $499.99 list on neakasa.com (10/09/2026); M1 Plus hardware in white: 11.23 L drawer rated 14 days for one cat, 13.86 in entry, buttons that run a cycle without the app. Bags at $19.99 for 30, emptied every 7 to 10 days per the manual (p.18), make the year about $353 before tax. What held it back: a 2-year warranty that Neakasa's policy page limits to M1, M1 Lite, and M1 Plus units bought on or after 01/01/2026, with 1 year as the standard term (neakasa.com, 10/14/2026); an app at 2.0 on iOS (192 ratings) and 2.2 on Android (654) as of 10/09/2026; 2.4 GHz only, which one Chewy owner called "ARCHAIC" (07/30/2025); and only 5 reviews of the Lite itself.
PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin
For a rotating box from the brand with the longest US support hours here. $399.99 on petsafe.com (10/14/2026). A sphere turns 180 degrees after a 3-minute countdown; the 6 L drawer "holds up to 2 weeks"; cats up to 25 lb, kittens from 2.5 lb and 6 months (guide). Optional liners at $14.99 for 25, weekly for one cat, bring the year to about $431 before tax. What held it back: the guide makes app pairing part of setup, the Pet Companion app rates 2.5 over 49 App Store ratings (10/14/2026), and cats.com's tester scored it 3.6 of 5 (10/03/2025). We read only 4 owner comments. Returns 45 days, warranty 1 year.
CATLINK Scooper Young Pro-X
For a no-app, no-Wi-Fi globe with the only independent noise reading in CATLINK's line. $399.99 sale, $498.00 list on catlinkus.com (10/09/2026); Cats 3.3 to 22 lb, 14 in entry, 13 L drawer rated "14-day" for one cat; cats.com measured 49 dB during a cycle (09/26/2025, distance not stated). What held it back: a globe of 65 L on CATLINK's page and 57 L at PetSmart; a $29.99 carbon filter every 2 months plus $39.99 bag packs, $203 a year and a first-year cost of about $603 before tax; and zero retail reviews read, because Amazon's 4.3-star listing is the older CL-03 generation. Returns 90 days, warranty 1 year.
Litter-Robot EVO
For one or two cats in a smaller room, with Whisker's 90-day in-home trial. $599 at litter-robot.com (10/14/2026). Rated for 3 to 19 lb (manual p.37), 10.75 in from floor to globe, drawer emptied every 7 days (page) or 8 days (use-and-care article) for one cat. Whisker+ is optional at $7.99 a month or $79.90 a year; weight tracking stays free. Liners and monthly carbon filters put the year at about $718 before tax. What held it back: no owner reviews we could read individually, technomeow's reviewer logging "a ton of position fault errors" on early units until a firmware update (02/25/2026), and no decibel figure from anyone. The EVO is covered in our Litter-Robot review.
Litter-Robot 4
For up to four cats and the longest owner record in the category. $699 at litter-robot.com (10/14/2026); the page says 3 to 25 lb while Whisker's support FAQ says it "does not have a weight limit." The one meter reading we have: yourbestdigs measured 40 to 55 dBA at about 20 in with wheat litter, against 60 to 62 dBA on the Litter-Robot 3 (07/11/2023), with a full-drawer alert every 7 to 10 days for one cat. What held it back: the highest first-year cost of the seven boxes detailed on this page, about $824 before tax; Whisker's Trustpilot seller rating of 3.3 over 609 reviews (45% one-star, 10/09/2026); and TheCatSite owners reporting it "randomly going offline" (09/09/2026). Full numbers in the Litter-Robot 4 review.
PETKIT Purobot Crystal Duo
For cats that refuse closed boxes, if you accept a tray subscription in all but name. $199.99 sale, $299.99 list on petkit.com (10/09/2026). An open tray with a rake, a camera, and disposable crystal trays rated "up to 30 days" for one cat; the manual (T7 V1.0, p.26) allows only PETKIT's trays. Cats over 3.3 lb with no stated maximum, entry 7.08 in. What held it back: trays at $79.99 for four, about $243 a year, more than the box; "I did not realize it was a subscription purchase" (petkit.com, 01/12/2026); and a CARE+ video plan with no printed price on petkit.com, the App Store, or Google Play (10/14/2026), so there is no first-year total. We read all 30 petkit.com reviews (4.0 average). See the PETKIT review.

Cumrige Automatic Litter Box (M2)
$199.99 on Amazon on 10/09/2026, a 95 L drum, a 15 L drawer Cumrige says "lasts up to 15 days," cats 2.2 to 33 lb per the listing, and 4.2 stars from 3,581 ratings. What held it back: no manual found, a generic Tuya Smart Life app, and two of the 10 reviews we read describing shutdowns: "Every possible trigger would cause a shutdown - every possible error message. ALL Of them. Almost randomly." (Amazon, 04/25/2026). Warranty 1 year per the listing. First year: about $200 before tax; liners unpriced, because Cumrige lists "Stretchable Cat Litter Liners – 3 Rolls/Pack" from $24.99 on cumrige.com (10/14/2026) without a replacement interval. Closest match with a store link: the CATLINK Scooper SE. More in our Cumrige review.
ELS PET Orbitie
$249.99 on Amazon on 10/09/2026, on a listing live since September 2026 with 4 ratings. ELS PET says the drawer "can hold waste for up to 15 days" and lists cats at 2.5 to 16.5 lb in one bullet and 2.5 to 18 lb in the title. What held it back: zero reviews of this listing read, cats.com's test of the older Spaceship 2 (09/03/2025) ending with a unit that "did NOT function, period." First year: about $250 before tax; bag prices not found. Closest match with a store link: the PETKIT Purobot Max 3.
Leo's Loo Too (Casa Leo)
$599.99 at casaleopet.com (10/09/2026). Casa Leo claims "~30 dB," "up to 4 cats," and cats up to 20 lb; the manual (p.2) bars Automatic Mode at 3 lb or less. NBC Select's writer (01/29/2025, one cat, clay litter) got 7 to 9 days per drawer. What held it back: clay-clumping litter only, since "Other litters void warranty" (product page), carbon filters every 30 days at $15.99 a pair, and the sole Trustpilot review (09/01/2026): "Fails by design. Fix sold Separately." First year: about $731 before tax. Closest match with a store link: the Litter-Robot EVO.
Pet Zone Smart Scoop
For a rake box with no app and no Wi-Fi. $165.56 on Amazon and Chewy (10/09/2026); bags at $6.49 for 12, changed "about once a week" per the manual (p.15), put the year at about $194 before tax. The manual limits it to cats of 6 to 15 lb and no kittens under 6 months. What held it back: 3.5 stars over 10,004 Amazon ratings, Amazon's summary citing owners whose "motor stops working after 3 months," and a listing that allows crystal or pine litter while the manual (p.11) says clumping only. Closest match with a store link: the PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping.
Meowant Self-Cleaning Litter Box (MW-SC02)
$239.99 on Amazon, sold by Amazon.com (10/09/2026); 75 L chamber, 3.3 to 22 lb, a 38 dB claim, and an entry of 6.8 in in one bullet and 6.1 in in Meowant's own comparison table. Four of the 10 reviews we read call it quiet. What held it back: "the grate holes are too big so urine/feces sometimes falls through them and back in the litter" (Amazon, 01/21/2025), a 4 L drawer, and the third-party AIR PET app at 2.7 on iOS. Warranty: "12-month after-sales service." First year: about $240 before tax, liners unpriced because Meowant prints no replacement interval for them (meowant.com, 10/14/2026). Closest match with a store link: the Neakasa M1 Lite Plus.
Also without a store link
- Popur X5: open tray, $339.98 at Chewy (snippet); no store link.
- HomeRunPet CS106: $699 on Amazon; 106 L dome; no store link.
How to choose
Pick the mechanism first, because it decides your consumables. Twenty of the 28 are rotating globes or drums, six are rake boxes, two are open trays with a rake. Rotating boxes and the ScoopFree Clumping take ordinary clumping litter; the four crystal ScoopFree boxes and the Crystal Duo take only their makers' crystal trays. Open-top boxes are what owners named when a cat refused a hood.
Check your cat's weight against the manual, not the ad. Lower limits: 3 lb (1.36 kg) for the Litter-Robot 4 (manual p.5), 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) for every PETKIT and CATLINK globe, and 3 lb for Leo's Loo Too: "Do not use this machine in Automatic Mode for cats weighing 3lbs or less." PETKIT's Max 3 manual (p.27) adds "Strictly prohibited for use by kittens under 6 months of age"; PetSafe and Pet Zone hold kittens to 6 months too. Upper limits run from 15 lb (Pet Zone) to 33 lb (Neakasa, Cumrige, PetSafe OpenSky); the large-cat roundup sorts by that number and by entry size. Litter rules differ too: Whisker's manual (p.35) says corn or wheat litter "may not pass through the screen effectively," Casa Leo voids the warranty for anything but clay, and Neakasa rules out tofu.
Three boxes require an app: the PETKIT Purobot Ultra, whose manual (p.36) says "The device can operate only after successful binding," and PetSafe's SmartSpin and OpenSky, whose guides make pairing part of setup. Six have no Wi-Fi at all, and no box needs a paid plan to clean. Most join 2.4 GHz networks only; the dual-band ones are the Litter-Robot 5 Pro, PETKIT Max Pro 2, Ultra, and Crystal Duo, and CATLINK Pro Ultra.
What it really costs in the first year
Our first-year figure adds the vendor's or retail price, shipping as shown on 10/09/2026, a year of any subscription the box needs to clean, and a year of scheduled consumables. Sales tax varies by state and is left out; so is litter. Medians: about $603 for rotating boxes, $443 for rake boxes, $404 for open designs.
Five boxes cost more to run than to buy. The ScoopFree Crystal Classic is $99.95 and the Crystal Pro Legacy $129.99, but PetSafe's tray chart (manual SFE400-2352/1) gives 20 to 30 days per tray for one cat, 12 to 18 trays a year at $22.50 each, about $328; the same trays drive the Crystal Plus and Crystal Smart, and the Crystal Duo spends about $243 a year on $79.99 four-packs. At the other end, Neakasa's bags come to about $24 a year, the ScoopFree Clumping and SmartSpin liners to about $31, Whisker's liners and filters to $110 to $125, and CATLINK's filters and bags to $197 to $203. Unpriced: PETKIT's bags and CARE+, so the Ultra, Max Pro 2, and Crystal Duo carry no total (cheap litter box roundup).
What owners complain about across the category
Not enough owner reviews read yet for a category-wide index: of the 408 reviews and posts behind this page, more than half sit in review widgets on the brands' own sites, which we don't count toward the index, and no box reaches 50 reviews without them. The pattern, not a percentage: app and Wi-Fi trouble came up most (76 mentions), then odor (70, in both directions), motor or mechanical faults (52), customer support (44), sensor errors (37), noise (37), and a cat that would not use the box (28). Examples: "the waste is not dropped evenly and piles up in one place making the sensor view it at full." (Neakasa, Trustpilot, 09/25/2026); "no takers so far.. it's been a week." (PETKIT Max Pro 2, petkit.com, 09/21/2026).
Safety and recalls
The CPSC recall database returned zero litter box recalls for every brand on this page on 10/14/2026 (saferproducts.gov recall API; cpsc.gov/Recalls on 10/09/2026). The only hits under these brand names are other products: PetSafe heated-bed power adapters (2010) and Pet Zone toys (2025).
What the makers print are limits and sensors, in their words: Whisker's Litter-Robot 4 manual (p.21) describes "Curtain Sensors looking downward across the unit opening" plus weight sensors; PETKIT's Max 3 page says "The cylinder's gear is intentionally incomplete. That means a permanent opening, no matter what." Rake boxes rely on a countdown after the cat leaves, 10 to 20 minutes by model.
FAQ
Do automatic litter boxes need an app?
No, with three exceptions: the PETKIT Purobot Ultra, whose manual (p.36) says it "can operate only after successful binding," and PetSafe's SmartSpin and OpenSky, whose guides make app pairing part of setup. The rest run a cycle from a button.
How much does an automatic litter box cost per year with liners and filters?
About $603 for the median rotating box, $443 for a rake box, and $404 for an open design in the first year, before tax and litter; consumables alone run from $24 (Neakasa bags) to $328 (PetSafe crystal trays).
Can a kitten use an automatic litter box?
Not in automatic mode until it passes the maker's limit: 6 months and 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) in PETKIT's Max 3 manual (p.27), 3 lb (1.36 kg) in Whisker's Litter-Robot 4 manual (p.5), 6 months for PetSafe's crystal boxes.
What is the best automatic litter box for multiple cats?
By the makers' counts: Litter-Robot 5 and CATLINK Pro Ultra "up to 5 cats," Litter-Robot 4 and Leo's Loo Too up to 4, Neakasa 2 to 3 per M1. Meowant's Amazon listing says its app supports up to 6 cats, which is a profile count, not a capacity rating.
Is a Litter-Robot worth it?
The Litter-Robot 4 costs about $824 in the first year against a $603 median for rotating boxes, and buys the longest owner record, a 90-day trial, and an independent meter reading with stated conditions (yourbestdigs.com, 40 to 55 dBA at about 20 in, 07/11/2023).

How we picked
What we checked: 31 product pages and 23 vendor manuals on 10/09/2026; 408 owner reviews and forum posts across Amazon, Chewy (archived copies), Trustpilot, the App Store and Google Play, TheCatSite, and the brands' own review widgets through 10/09/2026; the CPSC recall database (saferproducts.gov API and cpsc.gov/Recalls) for every brand on 10/09/2026.
Each box gets a five-point check: vendor specs, first-year cost against the category median, warranty and returns, owner reports, and whether an app or subscription is mandatory (how we research). Boxes we can link to come first and boxes without a store link after them; inside each group the order is the score, and ties go to the lower first-year cost. Three boxes are no longer sold and sit outside the ranking: the Litter-Robot 3 Connect, the PETKIT Pura X, and the PuraMax 2, gone from petkit.com but still on Amazon at $299.99 on 10/09/2026.
