Litter-Robot 4 Review: First-Year Cost, Sensor Issues and Who It's For

The Litter-Robot 4 is the self-cleaning litter box we'd point most one- to four-cat homes to if $699 at litter-robot.com (10/14/2026) fits the budget: no required subscription, free shipping to the contiguous US, and a 90-day return window. Liners and carbon filters add about $125 a year at Whisker's own intervals, so the first year runs about $824 before sales tax. The main gap between claim and independent reading is the waste drawer: the product page says "as low as once every 8 days" for one cat, the manual says "once per week," and the one metered review we found (yourbestdigs.com, 07/11/2023) logged 7–10 days.
you have one to four cats over 3 lb, want a box with no required plan, and value a 1-year warranty with accidental damage, a $129 three-year extension, and a free one-time replacement of major parts.
any cat in the house is under 3 lb (1.36 kg) per the manual (p. 5, p. 34), or your router runs only on 5 GHz. The newer model is in our Litter-Robot 5 review; the whole line is in the Litter-Robot brand review.

Verdict
What we checked: Whisker's product page, the 42-page manual (support label "Updated 3/14/2024"), and the warranty, returns, and financing pages on 10/09/2026; the Whisker app's App Store listing; 43 owner posts on TheCatSite, Trustpilot, and the App Store through 10/09/2026; two written reviews with noise readings; the CPSC recall database on 10/09/2026. Reddit, Chewy, and Amazon did not load for our tools, and we did not reach the litter-robot.com checkout.
Claimed vs measured
Whisker prints a drawer-interval claim but no decibel figure, and the independent numbers land close to, not above, the claim.
| Metric | Whisker claims | Independent result | Who, when, conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waste drawer, one cat | "as low as once every 8 days" (product page, 10/09/2026); "once per week is usually sufficient" (manual, p. 36) | "about once every 7-10 days for one cat" | Bryan Vu, yourbestdigs.com, 07/11/2023; one cat, wheat litter |
| Cycle noise | not listed; "QuietSift® technology that minimizes noise" | 40–55 dBA average, about 59 dBA peak, 38 dBA room | same author and date; sound level meter about 20 in from the box |
A second figure, "about 37 decibels while cycling" (cats.com, updated 10/03/2025), comes with no meter or distance and from a unit Whisker supplied, so we weight the yourbestdigs reading higher; the same author metered the Litter-Robot 3 Connect at 60–62 dBA under the same setup, the only direct evidence that the 4 is quieter than the 3.
Real price: list, street, tax, shipping and subscription
The bare Litter-Robot 4 shows "As low as $699" at litter-robot.com on 10/09/2026 and again on 10/14/2026, with no struck-through list price and no sale; five vendor bundles run from $828 to $1,327 under a "Take $75 off" banner. On 10/09/2026 the only retailer price that loaded was Target's Core Bundle at $799.99, which adds a mat, OdorTrap 6-pack, wipes, and liners; on 10/14/2026 Costco showed a LitterHopper Bundle at the same $799.99.
Shipping is "Free shipping (ex. AK/HI/PR)." Sales tax varies by state and is added at checkout, which we did not reach; Whisker's FAQ has no sales-tax entry (10/14/2026). No subscription is required; Whisker+ is optional at $7.99/month after a 30-day trial or $79.90/year (litter-robot.com/whisker-plus, 10/14/2026).

Category median first-year cost in our database: $622.50.
About $824 before sales tax, from Whisker's prices and intervals:
- Litter-Robot 4: $699 (litter-robot.com, 10/14/2026); shipping $0 to the contiguous US; required subscription $0
- Waste drawer liners: $25 for 25, $1 each; "once per week" for one cat (manual, p. 36) is 52 liners, about $52
- Carbon filters: $12 for 2, $6 each; "approximately 1 month" each (manual, p. 30), about 12 filters, about $73
- First year, before tax: about $824, plus sales tax — varies by state
Not in that total: OdorTrap packs, $15 per 3-pack, replaced "every 2 weeks" per the product page, about 26 packs and about $130 a year if you run them; Whisker+ at $79.90/year; litter, which is your choice. Any 10–13 gallon (37–49 L) trash bag works in place of the liners (manual, p. 15, p. 29).
Where to buy: official vs Amazon vs Chewy
Prices checked 10/14/2026Prices as printed on the store page on the date shown, before sales tax; stock and bundles differ by store.
On 10/14/2026, as on 10/09/2026, the only confirmed price for the bare unit was Whisker's own $699, with the 1-year warranty and the 90-day in-home trial. Target lists the Core Bundle at $799.99 (4.78/5 over 100 reviews). Costco lists a LitterHopper Bundle with 3-year WhiskerCare at $799.99 (costco.com item 1986374, 10/14/2026); Chewy lists a "with Step & Core Accessories Kit" bundle whose page our tools could not open (HTTP 429, 10/09/2026 and 10/14/2026). PetSmart carries the 5, 5 Pro, and EVO but no Litter-Robot 4. Whisker has no official Amazon listing and publishes a counterfeit warning; we did not check individual amazon.com sellers.
The difference is paperwork: robots bought outside Whisker's stores need manual warranty activation, the extended plan "Does not apply to robots sold by anyone other than Whisker or Whisker-approved distributors," and returns go through the retailer.
Financing
Not checked at checkout as of 10/09/2026. The product page sidebar says "Starting at just $44/mo." Whisker's financing page says "Financing options are available through Affirm," "Your rate will be 0%–36% APR based on credit, and is subject to an eligibility check," over "3, 6, 12, or 18 months." Whisker also lists HSA/FSA payment through Flex with a Letter of Medical Necessity.
Warranty and returns
One year of WhiskerCare is included; the three-year plan costs $129 if bought within the first year. Whisker's legal page lists "Accidental damage, material/workmanship defects, power surges," plus "mechanical and electrical breakdowns, software support, natural disasters," with "never deductibles or hidden fees." A support article lists a free one-time replacement under warranty of "the globe liner, seal strips, motor, laser board, bonnet, or power supply." Exclusions: defects "directly caused by modifications," damage from "a non-Whisker part, improper installation, or third-party service," and a "$75 cleaning fee" for units returned unclean. Returns within the 90-day trial cost your own shipping or a $60 label deducted from the refund, and need an RMA; the refund timing is printed two ways on the same page, "within 7-10 business days" and "within 10 to 30 days of receipt."
Parts, consumables and support in the US
Every consumable has a printed price at litter-robot.com (10/09/2026) and none needs a subscription: Waste Drawer Liners $25 for 25 (10 for $12, 50 for $35); Carbon Filters $12 for 2 (6 for $30), "not required for the unit to function" (manual, p. 30); OdorTrap Packs $15 for 3, optional; Seal Strips $29 for 12, replaced "when they are dirty or peeling," one free replacement under warranty; Lit Premium litter $30 for 20 lb, optional. The filters are "Not compatible with Litter-Robot 3/Connect"; the liners fit any Litter-Robot. The ramp, fence, and furniture are on the Litter-Robot accessories page.
Support is in Auburn Hills, Michigan: phone 1-877-250-7729, chat, and tickets. As a seller, Whisker holds 3.3/5 on Trustpilot over 609 reviews and an A+ with the BBB, with 89 complaints in three years (both 10/09/2026).
Sensor, cat detection and safety stops
The unit detects a cat two ways, and the stop logic is in the manual. Whisker says it uses "laser and weight sensor technology" to detect entries and exits. Manual, p. 21: "If a Curtain Sensor is activated during a cycle, the Globe will stop"; "If additional weight is detected during a cycle, the Globe will stop. After 15 seconds of the additional weight exiting, the Globe rotation will resume." The cycle delay defaults to 7 minutes and goes "up to 30 minutes."
Weight limits are where Whisker's documents disagree. The product page says 3–25 lb; the US manual says cats "must weight 1.36 kg or more" (p. 5) and should not use "the unattended Automatic Mode" below that (p. 34); the support FAQ says "No, Litter-Robot 4 does not have a weight limit." Sensor trouble is the most repeated complaint in the 43 owner posts we read (3 of 43): "the robot occasionally has sensor troubles and stops sifting" (TheCatSite, 09/07/2023).
Waste drawer, liners and odor control
The drawer measures about 5.5 x 13.5 x 9.3 in (14 x 34.3 x 23.5 cm) in the manual's drawing (p. 10); Whisker prints no liter figure. The Drawer Full Indicator uses the optical system, and the manual warns on p. 5 that translucent or white crystal litter "may impact the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator." Odor control is one carbon filter in the drawer cover, monthly and optional per the manual, plus the optional OdorTrap packs; odor was the complaint in 1 of the 43 owner posts we read, and there is no independent odor measurement.
Litter type, cleaning and maintenance
Clumping clay only. Manual, p. 35: "We recommend a high-quality, clay-based clumping litter. Use of lightweight litters, such as corn or wheat, may not pass through the screen effectively"; non-clumping, newspaper, pine, and wood-pellet litters "do not work." Fill to the MAX line, about 4 L (p. 12), and top up weekly (p. 15); the yourbestdigs readings above were taken on wheat litter, which the manual discourages. The entryway is 15.75 x 15.75 in with 16.5 in of interior height, the floor-to-entryway height is about 12 in (30.5 cm), the unit weighs 24 lb, and it takes 22 x 27 in of floor at 29.5 in tall, or 22 x 38 in with the ramp (manual, p. 10).
App and privacy
The Litter-Robot 4 cleans without the app: "The Whisker app is not required for Litter-Robot to function—Litter-Robot will still work as a self-cleaning litter box even without WiFi" (litter-robot.com FAQ). The Connect button turns Wi-Fi off (manual, p. 26), and the radio is 2.4 GHz only (FCC table, p. 38). Free in the app: SmartScale cat identification and per-cat weight tracking; Whisker+ adds daily activity summaries, habit tracking per cat, two years of history, and Patterns (beta).
On the App Store (10/09/2026) the Whisker app holds 4.8 of 5 over 148K ratings; on Google Play (10/14/2026) it is rated 4.7 over about 60,000 reviews, and the Data safety section says "No data shared with third parties" and lists Personal info, Photos and videos, and App activity as data the app may collect. The App Store privacy label, verbatim. Data Linked to You: Advertising or Marketing, Contact Info (Email Address, Name); Analytics, Identifiers (User ID, Device ID); App Functionality, Contact Info (Email Address, Name), User Content (Photos or Videos), Identifiers (User ID, Device ID), Usage Data (Product Interaction). Data Used to Track You: Contact Info, Identifiers. Connectivity is the second-most repeated complaint we read (2 of 43): "the robot works well but the app keeps disconnecting and asking to re-register the device" (App Store, 05/14/2023).
Recalls and safety notices
No recall found as of 10/14/2026: the saferproducts.gov recall API returned nothing for "Whisker," "Litter-Robot," or "litter box" that day. On 10/09/2026 we searched cpsc.gov/Recalls for the same terms; none of the first 20 listings related to this product.

An independent store shows at least 25 ratings averaging 4.3 or higher, none below 4.0. In our score this is 2 of 2 points. How we score
Vendor (litter-robot.com) shows 4.5/5 from 14,096 reviews on its own page; brand-site reviews are not counted in the score.
- quiet cycle vs LR3 (App Store 'Absolutely LOVE my LR4's'; yourbestdigs meter)
- support under warranty replaces parts quickly (Trustpilot Sep 2026, ComplaintsBoard)
- waste drawer 7–10 days for one cat (yourbestdigs, cats.com editor comment)
Reviews on the brand's own site and reviews written for a free product are not counted. Store ratings change over time; the date shows when we checked.
Not enough owner reviews read yet (43 read on TheCatSite, Trustpilot, and the App Store), so we publish no Owner Complaint Index for this model. Read through 10/09/2026: 35 posts in two TheCatSite threads (09/08/2026 and 09/05/2023), 5 Trustpilot reviews of litter-robot.com as a seller, and 3 App Store reviews. We don't count the 14,096 reviews at 4.5/5 on Whisker's own page; r/litterrobot and Chewy did not load for our tools.
What owners complain about
Themes across the 43 posts: customer support 4, sensor errors 3, app or Wi-Fi 2, cat won't use it 2, odor 1, motor 1, noise 1. Beyond the sensor and app quotes above: "Benji unfortunately won't use it." and "It does have problems with now and then randomly going offline" (both TheCatSite, 09/09/2026). At the seller level, Trustpilot's 609 reviews split 45% one-star and 36% five-star, and the BBB's 89 complaints cluster on failures shortly after the warranty ends.
What owners praise
Support under warranty, from the same Trustpilot pool: "Customer service under extended warranty has been amazing." (09/20/2026) and "The customer service team for Litter-Robot is truly unmatched." (09/17/2026). Second, the quieter cycle against the Litter-Robot 3, which matches the yourbestdigs meter.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- No required subscription, and it cleans without Wi-Fi in Whisker's own words (FAQ, 10/09/2026)
- 40–55 dBA on a meter at 20 in versus 60–62 dBA for the Litter-Robot 3 Connect (yourbestdigs.com, 07/11/2023)
- 1-year warranty with accidental damage; 3-year plan $129; free one-time replacement of six major parts
Cons:
- 8-day drawer claim on the product page against "once per week" in the manual and 7–10 days in the one metered review
- Sensor complaints in 3 of 43 owner posts; app disconnects in 2 of 43
- $60 deducted for the return label; $75 cleaning fee for a unit returned dirty
FAQ
Does the Litter-Robot 4 work without Wi-Fi?
Yes. Whisker's FAQ says it "will still work as a self-cleaning litter box even without WiFi." When you do connect, it needs a 2.4 GHz network.
What litter does the Litter-Robot 4 use?
Clumping clay, per the manual (p. 35), which rules out non-clumping, newspaper, pine, and wood-pellet litters. Any clumping clay brand works; the accessory list is on the Litter-Robot accessories page.
How often do you empty the waste drawer?
About once a week for one cat. The product page says "as low as once every 8 days," the manual says "once per week" for one cat and "twice per week" for two (p. 36), and yourbestdigs.com logged a full-drawer alert every 7–10 days with one cat (07/11/2023).
What is the minimum cat weight?
3 lb (1.36 kg), per the manual (p. 5, p. 34) and the product page. The upper limit is printed two ways, 25 lb or none; large-cat alternatives are in the best automatic litter boxes.
How much does the Litter-Robot 4 cost?
$699 at litter-robot.com on 10/14/2026, with free shipping to the contiguous US and no required subscription. Liners and filters add about $125 a year, so the first year is about $824 before sales tax.
What changed in the Litter-Robot 5?
The Litter-Robot 5 ($799) and 5 Pro ($899) launched 10/21/2025 with an LCD screen, a 3–30 lb rated range, "up to 5 cats," a 10-day one-cat drawer claim, and WasteID; the Pro adds two cameras and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The 3-year plan is $149 instead of $129. The full breakdown is in our Litter-Robot 5 review.
