The PETKIT Eversweet Max 2 ranked first on our five-point check among the large dog fountains we can link to: 101 oz (3 L), cordless, $99.99 at petkit.com (10/14/2026; $93.99 at Amazon from PETKIT-US on 10/09/2026), plus about $58 a year in filters. It ties the Dockstream 2 as the smallest of the six, though. For a big dog or several dogs indoors, the PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum holds 168 oz and costs about $86 in its first year; for a yard, the Drinkwell Outdoor Dog Fountain holds 450 oz, with a limit of seasonal use only.

PETKIT Eversweet Max 2 (our top pick)

For a medium dog indoors, or a spot with no outlet nearby. $93.99 at Amazon, sold by PETKIT-US (10/09/2026); PETKIT's own store lists the UVC version at $99.99 (petkit.com, 10/14/2026). It holds 101 oz (3 L), runs on a 5,000 mAh battery PETKIT rates at "service life up to 83 days," and has a stainless tray over an ABS tank. The Bluetooth app is optional. PETKIT says "Except for the battery pack, all other parts are dishwasher safe." What held it back: the smallest capacity here (tied with the Dockstream 2), a 1-year warranty, 4.0 stars over 162 Amazon ratings with Amazon's summary citing owners who say it "eventually stops working," and a filter listing that names the Eversweet Max, not the Max 2. Filters run "every 2-4 weeks," about $58 a year at the long end. First year: $99.99 at petkit.com plus about $58 in filters, before shipping and sales tax, which varies by state. See our PETKIT review.

Outdoor dog fountain: PetSafe Drinkwell Outdoor Dog Fountain

The only fountain in our files its maker rates for outdoor use, and the largest: 450 oz in two 1-gallon reservoirs plus the bowl. $110.99 at petsafe.com with free shipping (10/09/2026). PetSafe lists "high-impact UV-resistant plastic," a 12-volt pump, and an "Anti-Bite Cord Cover." The limits are in the manual (400-1413, p.1): it is "intended for year-round indoor household use or seasonal outdoor use. Do not operate the fountain in temperatures below 40° F / 4.4° C." Page 6 adds that it is best "in a covered location and out of direct sunlight if possible."

Outdoors, filters wear out twice as fast. The manual (p.7) says "Change the charcoal filter every 2 to 4 weeks when used Indoors and every 1 to 2 weeks when used Outdoors" and "Replace the foam filter every 4 to 8 weeks." The foam comes only in a $10.99 multi-pack with three carbon filters, which one owner notes: "you cannot not get the replacement foam filter without also buying the standard carbon filters." (petsafe.com, 01/04/2024). That is about $143 a year indoors at the short end and $191.02 outdoors; first year indoors, about $254 before sales tax, which varies by state.

What held it back: a 1-year warranty that excludes "damage caused by pollution, sunlight, other environmental conditions" and "may be voided if the motor is not cleaned," and only 6 owner reviews read. One calls it "the loudest water fountain pump i have ever heard" (05/14/2025); another saw flow drop "The second summer about half way through" (06/11/2023). The praise is capacity: "We leave town often and know our dog will have 4 days worth of water in this fountain." (10/16/2022). Footprint 17.4 x 16.7 x 24.2 in.

PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum (lowest first-year cost)

For a large dog indoors on a budget. $55.99 at petsafe.com, free shipping over $49 (10/09/2026); 168 oz, the most of any indoor fountain here. One carbon filter "every two to four weeks" (guide p.9) at $13.99 for 12 comes to about $30 a year; first year about $86 before sales tax, which varies by state. The guide also says "For indoor household use only." What held it back: in the 60 owner reviews we read on Walmart (the 6 on petsafe.com repeat them), leaks came up 9 times (15%), and 3 owners found it too small or shallow for large dogs: "Fountain is to small for a 75# dog But you don't seem to sell any larger anymore." (Walmart, 03/25/2022). Against that, owners report 5 to 12+ years of use, and one feeds "14 cats" from it (Walmart, 07/05/2025). Warranty 1 year, returns 45 days.

PetSafe Drinkwell Stainless Multi-Pet

For a stainless steel dog fountain with room for several small or medium dogs. $75.99 at petsafe.com, free shipping (10/09/2026); 128 oz, a stainless bowl and cone, five spout rings; PetSafe calls it "scratch and rust-resistant." Filters: the manual says "every two weeks," the filter page "every 2 to 4 weeks," about $75 a year at the short end with foam; first year about $151 before sales tax, which varies by state. What held it back for large dogs is the bowl: "Not for large dogs. 80% of the bowl is taken up by the center cylinder." (petsafe.com, 02/17/2026), and "The fountain is too small and the fountain is weak." (Walmart, 05/21/2026). The manual says "FOR INDOOR USE ONLY." Only 8 owner reviews read. Warranty 1 year, returns 45 days. PetSafe's whole lineup is summarized in our PetSafe review.

We have no store link for these two; each names the closest fountain we link to.

Veken C1 Stainless, 108 oz

The cheapest large steel fountain we found: $27.99 sale, $29.99 list at Amazon (10/09/2026), 108 oz (3.2 L) of 304 stainless, filters and sponges "every 2 weeks" at about $53 a year. The same listing sells a 237 oz size for large dogs; Amazon showed our tools no US price for it on 10/09/2026 or 10/14/2026. First year for the 108 oz: about $81 before sales tax, assuming free delivery, which Amazon showed only on orders over $35. What held it back: no manual, a warranty stated only in Amazon's product information ("2 Years"), and Amazon's summary that "others mention the pump stops working after two months." Closest match with a store link: none at this price; the cheapest large fountain we link to is the Drinkwell Platinum at $55.99.

Petlibro Dockstream 2

101 oz (3 L), a "pump-free design," and hydration tracking by weight in Petlibro's app. $79.99 at Amazon for the plug-in (10/09/2026); filters every 2 weeks, about $60 a year; warranty 24 months. What held it back: 3.4 stars over 459 Amazon ratings for the cordless version and a capacity no bigger than the Max 2's. Closest match with a store link: the Drinkwell Stainless Multi-Pet, $75.99, 128 oz. See our Dockstream review.

Smaller fountains, and why they're not listed

The rest of our files hold 50 to 84 oz, among them the Drinkwell Pagoda (70 oz), Butterfly (50 oz), Pioneer Pet Raindrop ceramic and stainless (60 oz each), Petlibro Dockstream Cordless (84 oz), and Cat Mate (70 oz). PetSafe itself pitches the Pagoda as "perfect for cats and small to medium-sized dogs" and the Butterfly as "perfect for cats and small dogs." For a small dog they can work; they are compared in our cat water fountain roundup.

How to choose

Start with capacity and refills. The six run from 101 oz to 450 oz; one Outdoor owner gets "4 days worth of water" for one dog, and another waters "4 dogs" from it.

Check the bowl, not only the tank. The Stainless Multi-Pet's center cone takes up most of the bowl by one owner's count, and three Platinum owners called it small for a large dog.

Decide indoors or out. The Platinum and Stainless Multi-Pet manuals restrict them to indoor use; the Outdoor Dog Fountain is the only one rated for outside, and only above 40° F.

Pick the material. Stainless surfaces: the Stainless Multi-Pet bowl, the Veken body, the Max 2 tray. The Outdoor and Platinum are plastic; PetSafe lists their parts as "Top-rack dishwasher safe," with the pump, and the Outdoor's reservoirs, washed by hand.

What it costs in the first year

Our first-year figure is price, shipping where shown, and a year of filters at the maker's shorter interval; sales tax varies by state and is left out. With shipping known: about $81 for the Veken 108 oz, $86 for the Platinum, $151 for the Stainless Multi-Pet, and $254 for the Outdoor indoors. Without shipping: the Max 2 is $99.99 plus about $58 at the 4-week end of PETKIT's filter range, the Dockstream 2 $79.99 plus about $60. The Outdoor's filters alone come to about $143 a year indoors and $191.02 outdoors, because the manual halves the carbon interval outside. PetSafe's filter auto-ship takes 5% off.

Safety and recalls

The CPSC recall database returned zero fountain recalls for PetSafe, PETKIT, Petlibro, and Veken on 10/09/2026 and through the saferproducts.gov recall API on 10/14/2026; the only PetSafe hit was unrelated, heated-bed adapters from 2010 (#10283). Incident reports on saferproducts.gov were not searched. What the makers print are limits: the Outdoor's 40° F floor and its "Anti-Bite Cord Cover," and "Do not use outdoors" in the Platinum guide.

FAQ

What is the best outdoor dog water fountain?

The PetSafe Drinkwell Outdoor Dog Fountain is the only one in our files its maker rates for outdoor use: 450 oz, $110.99 at petsafe.com (10/09/2026). PetSafe limits it to "seasonal outdoor use" and not below 40° F, and the manual asks for carbon filter changes "every 1 to 2 weeks" outside.

Can a dog water fountain stay outside in winter?

Not the Drinkwell Outdoor, by its manual: "Do not operate the fountain in temperatures below 40° F / 4.4° C." The other large fountains here are indoor models; the Platinum and Stainless Multi-Pet manuals say so directly.

Are stainless steel water fountains good for dogs?

No test in our files says steel is better or worse for dogs; the bowl decides more. The Drinkwell Stainless Multi-Pet holds 128 oz, but one owner says "80% of the bowl is taken up by the center cylinder." The Veken C1 is steel too, without a store link, and PetSafe calls its own steel bowl "scratch and rust-resistant."

How we picked

What we checked: product pages for 20 pet fountains and the PetSafe manuals on 10/09/2026; 80 owner reviews read in full on Walmart and petsafe.com for the PetSafe models; Amazon's review summaries for the rest; warranty and return terms; and the CPSC recall database for every brand on 10/09/2026, rechecked through the saferproducts.gov recall API on 10/14/2026. Chewy and Reddit were not readable that day.

Only fountains of 100 oz or more that the maker sells for dogs, or for cats and dogs, made this list: six of the 20. That cut is ours, not a maker's rule. Fountains we can link to come first, ordered by our five-point check with ties going to the lower first-year cost (how we research).
