Questions

How much does a GPS dog collar cost per year?

Most GPS collars need a cellular plan on top of the device. On the vendor pages we read on 10/09/2026, a year of Tractive's Basic plan is $108 (billed annually), FitBark GPS's annual plan is $96, Fi's 1-year membership is $189, and Pawfit's $12.99 monthly plan adds up to $155.88 a year ($95.88 if you prepay a year). Invoxia's Biotracker runs on a free basic plan; live GPS tracking is in its optional Max GPS plan at $129.95 a year. Garmin Alpha T 20 and PitPat GPS list no subscription. The plan is added to the device price in the first-year cost column of Best GPS dog collars.

Do wireless dog fences need a subscription?

It depends on the type. GPS fences that live in the collar (Halo Collar 4 and 5, PetSafe Guardian GPS 2.0) list $9.99 monthly plans, $119.88 over a year, on their vendor pages (10/09/2026); paying a year ahead costs $109.89 at Halo and $99 at PetSafe. SpotOn's plan is optional. Radio wireless fences (PetSafe Stay & Play Compact, Wireless Pet Containment System) and in-ground wire fences from PetSafe, SportDOG and eXtreme Dog Fence list no subscription. See Best wireless dog fences and Best underground dog fences.

How accurate are dog DNA tests?

Vendors publish the size of their breed database rather than an independent accuracy figure: Wisdom Panel says "430+ breeds", Embark "400+ breeds, types, and varieties" with a "99% breed ancestry accuracy" claim on its product page, DNA My Dog "350+ breeds" (vendor pages, 10/09/2026). What those numbers mean, where the vendors' own pages disagree with each other, and which parts of a report are screening rather than diagnosis is covered in How accurate are dog DNA tests; the kits themselves are compared in Best dog DNA tests.

Which automatic dog feeders work without an app?

Six of the 15 dog feeders we track run on their own schedule with no app required: Cat Mate C200 and C500, PetSafe Simply Feed, SureFeed Microchip Feeder and Microchip Feeder Connect, and the Whisker Feeder-Robot (app optional). None of the 15 requires a subscription; two list an optional plan. Filter by "App optional" in Best automatic dog feeders.
