Which automatic litter box to buy for a large cat
We track 21 self-cleaning litter boxes. Our top pick is PETKIT Purobot Max 3 Automatic Cat Litter Box, scored 9.75/10. 17 of 21 with a listed plan status work with no subscription. Prices run $199.99 to $799.99, checked 10/14/2026.
For a cat of 18 lb or more, the PETKIT Purobot Max 3 is the box we'd point you to first: PETKIT rates it to 22 lb (manual T4-3 V1.1, p.26), the entry sits 8.03 in off the floor and measures 10.51 by 10.74 in, it costs $399.99 on sale against $499.99 list (petkit.com, 10/09/2026), and an owner of two Maine Coon mixes reports "Much more space for our big boys too" (petkit.com, 09/20/2026). Over 22 lb, the stated limits move to 25 lb (Litter-Robot 4, PetSafe SmartSpin), 30 lb (Litter-Robot 5), and "around 33 lbs" (Neakasa M1 Plus and M1 Lite Plus), the open-top pair we'd pick for a cat that will not enter a hood; PetSafe's new open-top OpenSky also lists "cats up to 33 lbs."

The boxes that matter most for a big cat
PETKIT Purobot Max 3 (our top pick)
Rated to 22 lb, with the lowest entry of any hooded globe we can link to at 8.03 in and a 76 L drum. PETKIT's FAQ adds: "Cats do vary in length and shape. Check the entry dimensions." About $481 in the first year before tax; 12 reviews read, released July 2026. Noise is printed twice: PETKIT's product description says 35 dB; the FAQ on the same page says 45 dB. The PuraMax 2, which shares this 24.41 by 21.18 by 21.73 in body, drew one complaint that the "Opening is a little too small for my larger cat" (petkit.com, 06/05/2025). More in our PETKIT review.
Neakasa M1 Lite Plus (runner-up and lowest first-year cost)
The highest stated limit with a store link, "up to around 33 lbs," shared with the M1 Plus and PetSafe's OpenSky, on an open-top chamber with no hood; the trade is a 13.86 in step up, which Neakasa's help center says may call for the $59.99 ramp. $328.99 sale, $499.99 list, about $353 in the first year. An owner of the same hardware: "With 2 growing maine coon kittens i have to empty it once every 6 days." (neakasa.com, 03/20/2026). The app rates 2.0 on iOS over 192 ratings (10/09/2026). Neakasa's warranty policy gives the M1 line 2 years for units bought on or after 01/01/2026 and lists 1 year as the standard term; the M9 is not on that 2-year list, although Neakasa's M9 product page says 2 years (both 10/14/2026).
Litter-Robot 4 and Litter-Robot 5
The biggest openings in the set, 15.75 by 15.75 in on both, with 16.5 in of interior height on the 4 and 15 to 19 in inside the 5's globe (manual p.8). Whisker prints "3-25 lbs" for the 4 on the product page but "There is no weight limit for the Litter-Robot 4" in a support Q&A answer dated 08/02/2025 (both on litter-robot.com, 10/14/2026); the 5 is rated to 30 lb. $699 and $799 ($899 for the 5 Pro) at litter-robot.com on 10/14/2026, about $824 and $909 in the first year, both with a 90-day trial. Details in the Litter-Robot 4 and Litter-Robot 5 reviews.
PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin
PetSafe states "cats up to 25 lb"; the 12 in entry comes from cats.com's 10/03/2025 test, because PetSafe lists no dimensions. $399.99 (petsafe.com, 10/14/2026), about $431 in the first year; app pairing is part of setup.
CATLINK Young Pro-X, Luxury Pro-X, and Pro Ultra
Same globe family, same 22 lb limit, same 13 by 10.6 in opening 14 in off the floor, which is why CATLINK sells a $99 ramp and cats.com called the step "a necessity for many cats." Young Pro-X $399.99 sale with no app; Luxury Pro-X $439 sale with per-cat tracking; Pro Ultra $599 with a camera and no owner reviews found (catlinkus.com prices, 10/09/2026).
PETKIT Purobot Ultra: rated to 22 lb, but read the owners
The spec says 22 lb; an owner says "the inside is surprisingly snug. My cats are fine (11lbs), but I wouldn't put a huge cat in here." (petkit.com, 02/05/2026), and the opening is the smallest in the table at 9.84 by 8.54 in. The Max Pro 2 ($499.99 sale, 10.03 in entry, same 22 lb) is the better big-cat fit in PETKIT's camera line; its FAQ calls the entry "43% larger" than the first Max Pro.
Boxes without a store link
Cumrige's 95 L drum and 33 lb figure come from the Amazon listing alone; closest match with a store link: the CATLINK Scooper SE. HomeRunPet's CS106 claims the largest chamber, 106 L, for 25 lb cats "including larger breeds such as Maine Coons and Ragdolls" (Amazon), at $699; closest match: the Litter-Robot 4. Leo's Loo Too states 20 lb, and hunker's reviewer found it "cramped for larger cats" (02/21/2023); closest match: the Litter-Robot EVO. Meowant's 22 lb globe has the lowest step on the page, 6.8 in in one Amazon bullet and 6.1 in in Meowant's own table; closest match: the Neakasa M1 Lite Plus. Popur's X5 page prints no cat weight range, only "33 lbs." of litter load (popur.com, 10/14/2026).
How to choose for a large cat
Measure the cat, not just the weight. The numbers that stop a long cat are the opening and the interior: Litter-Robot 15.75 by 15.75 in, CATLINK 13 by 10.6 in, PETKIT Max 3 and Max Pro 2 10.51 by 10.74 in, PETKIT Ultra 9.84 by 8.54 in. Open-top chambers remove the hood question. The lowest entries belong to the smaller openings (Meowant 6.8 in, Max 3 8.03 in); the biggest openings sit high (Litter-Robot 5 at 15.1 in, CATLINK at 14 in, Neakasa at 13.86 in), and Neakasa and CATLINK sell ramps at $59.99 and $99. A big cat also fills the drawer faster: a PETKIT Ultra owner reports "only lasts fir a week with my 17 pound cat." (petkit.com, 10/25/2025) against 20 days claimed. With more than one big cat, the makers' cat counts are in the table above: up to 5 for the Litter-Robot 5 and CATLINK Pro Ultra, 4 for the Litter-Robot 4.
What it really costs in the first year
Same formula as the main ranking: vendor price, shipping, a year of any required subscription, a year of scheduled consumables, no tax, no litter. Linked boxes: Neakasa M1 Lite Plus about $353, M1 Plus $404, SmartSpin $431, CATLINK SE $456, Max 3 $481, PetSafe OpenSky $570, Young Pro-X $603, Luxury Pro-X $642, EVO $718, CATLINK Pro Ultra $822, Litter-Robot 4 $824, Litter-Robot 5 $909. PETKIT's camera models have no total because CARE+ has no printed price on petkit.com, the App Store, or Google Play (10/14/2026). A heavier cat shortens the drawer interval, so the bag lines are a floor.
What owners of large cats complain about
Not enough owner reviews read yet for an index; across the 408 we read, mentions of a large cat were rare and split. Positive: the Max 3 owner with Maine Coon mixes, the Neakasa owner with Maine Coon kittens, and a PuraMax 2 owner whose "9, 11, and 12 pound cats" "all fit comfortably in here" (Amazon, 09/22/2026). Negative: the Ultra owner who would not put "a huge cat in here" and the PuraMax 2 owner whose opening was "a little too small." No owner in our set reported a cat over 25 lb using any box, so the 30 lb and 33 lb limits are vendor statements only.
Safety and recalls
The CPSC recall database returned zero litter box recalls for every brand on this page on 10/14/2026 (saferproducts.gov recall API; cpsc.gov/Recalls on 10/09/2026). Makers describe their own stop mechanisms: Whisker's weight sensors stop the globe "If additional weight is detected during a cycle" (Litter-Robot 4 manual, p.21); PETKIT says its drum keeps "a permanent opening, no matter what." No manual quantifies how a 25 lb cat registers differently from a 10 lb one; Casa Leo prints a scale accuracy of plus or minus 1 lb (manual p.19) and PetSafe calls "a 1–2-pound deviation" normal on the SmartSpin.
FAQ
Does the Litter-Robot work for large cats?
Whisker says yes, up to 25 lb on the Litter-Robot 4 page and 30 lb on the Litter-Robot 5, with a 15.75 by 15.75 in opening on both. The EVO is the exception at 19 lb (manual p.37).
Which automatic litter box is the largest?
By printed chamber volume: HomeRunPet CS106 at 106 L (Amazon listing, no store link), Cumrige M2 at 95 L, then PETKIT's Max 3 and Max Pro 2 at 76 L and Meowant at 75 L. By opening, the Litter-Robot 4 and 5 at 15.75 by 15.75 in.
Is there an automatic litter box with no weight limit?
One maker says it outright: Whisker's support FAQ says "No, Litter-Robot 4 does not have a weight limit," while its product page prints 25 lb. Two more print no maximum: PETKIT's Crystal Duo FAQ ("suitable for all-sized cats, including Maine Coon") and Neakasa's M9 FAQ ("a wide range of sizes and weights").
What is the best self-cleaning litter box for a Maine Coon?
The boxes whose owners named the breed in reviews we read are the PETKIT Purobot Max 3 and the Neakasa M1 Plus; HomeRunPet and PETKIT's Crystal Duo name Maine Coons in their own copy. A long cat needs the opening sizes in the table above.
How we picked
What we checked: the cat-weight, entry, and chamber figures on 31 product pages and in 23 manuals on 10/09/2026; 408 owner reviews and threads through 10/09/2026, flagged for any mention of a large breed, a weight over 15 lb, or a cat not fitting; and the CPSC recall database for every brand on 10/09/2026. Scoring is the five-point check from our main litter box ranking, described on how we research; boxes we can link to come first and boxes without a store link after them; inside each group the order is that score, ties broken by first-year cost.
The cut for this page: the maker prints a maximum of 18 lb or more, or says in its own words that there is no limit. That admits 21 of the 28 boxes on sale. Out: Pet Zone Smart Scoop (15 lb, manual), PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro Legacy ("Best for cats under 15 lb," manual p.5) and Crystal Classic ("up to 15 pounds," product FAQ), ELS PET Orbitie (16.5 lb in the Amazon bullet, 18 lb in the title), and three PetSafe boxes whose guides print no limit at all.
