Which GPS dog collar to buy
We track 11 GPS dog collars. Our top pick is Fi Mini, scored 9/10. 3 of 11 with a listed plan status work with no subscription. Prices run $34.95 to $299.99, checked 10/09/2026.
Fi Mini is the GPS tracker we'd point most dog owners to: it scored highest on our five-point check among the trackers we can link to, weighs 0.56 oz by Fi's spec, and costs $99 plus the membership Fi requires, $189/year, so about $297 in the first year before tax (Fi billing page, 10/09/2026). It runs on Verizon's LTE-M network and Fi sells no month-to-month plan. For a full collar with a longer battery claim, read the Fi Series 3+ entry; the lowest first-year cost belongs to FitBark GPS (about $131) and the Tractive DOG 6 (about $155).

Fi Mini (our top pick)
For most dogs, including small ones, on a collar you already own. Fi Mini is a clip-on: 0.56 oz, 1.65 x 1.18 x 0.49 in (42 x 30 x 12.5 mm), IP68, on straps for collars 0.375 to 1.25 in wide per Fi's help center (the launch blog says up to 1 in). The number that put it first: about $297 for year one, $21 under the Series 3+, with the same $189/year plan. What held it back: Fi's help center says "up to 2 months" of battery while the 08/25/2025 launch blog said "3-week battery life," it charges by USB-C with the tracker taken out of its strap, and Fi's own product URL for it returned 404, so the specs come from help articles. Only 2 of the 50 recent App Store reviews I read name the Mini.
Fi Series 3+ (runner-up)
For a full collar band, sizes XS to XL, with a charging base. $129 plus the $189/year plan, about $318 in year one. It runs on AT&T's LTE-M network. Fi's battery article gives "Up to 3 months" at low activity, "4 to 6 weeks" at moderate, "Up to 2 weeks" for dogs outdoors most of the day, and about 2 days in Lost Mode; one App Store owner wrote, "The battery life is never more than 5 to 6 days" (09/22/2026). Fi's help center rates it IP68 to about 4.9 ft (1.5 m) for 30 minutes, while the collar page says "up to 50 meters deep." The Amazon listing, currently unavailable, shows 3.8 of 5 over 983 ratings, with "tracking speed" tagged negative in 46 mentions (10/09/2026).
Fi Ultra
For dogs that run off-leash in areas with patchy cell service. Fi Ultra uses T-Mobile LTE plus T-Satellite with Starlink, US only, and Fi says satellite coverage "is not available in Alaska." Fi also writes that it "is designed for off-leash use, not off-grid use." $299 plus $189/year, about $488 in year one; added to a Fi dog that already has a membership, it needs no second plan. The number that held it back: "about 2 to 3 days" per charge, up to 5 with Power Saving Mode. It weighs 2.4 oz, has no health insights, and has a CallBack sound or vibration signal at Low, Medium, or High that you trigger from the app. One owner wrote that "The app takes a long time to send the trigger to the collar" (App Store, 09/21/2026).
FitBark GPS 2nd Gen
For a dog that spends most days at home on Wi-Fi. $34.95 on sale against $69.95 list, and the cheapest first year in the table: about $131 with the $96 1-year plan (about $155 if you buy the 6-month plan twice). FitBark lists 0.56 oz (16 g), dogs from 5 lb, LTE-M on Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, and a 2-year warranty. The battery table is the catch: "up to 4 weeks" on Wi-Fi plus daily walks, "up to 10 days" in lost-pet mode, "up to 6 hours" in live tracking. FitBark says it is not for you if "You don't have Wi-Fi in your house." I read 24 reviews; one owner says "it only last half a day from full charge" (Trustpilot, 09/20/2026). Closest match we link to: Fi Mini.
Tractive DOG 6
For the second-lowest first-year cost among cellular trackers, after FitBark GPS. $47.40 on sale against $79 list on tractive.com, plus Basic 1-Year at $108 ($9/month billed annually), about $155 in year one; Tractive sells no monthly plan on its US page. It connects to AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile LTE, sends LIVE updates every 2 to 3 seconds, and fits dogs above 8.8 lb at 1.4 oz. Tractive claims "Up to 14 days" with Power Saving Zones and "Up to 6 days" without. Treeline Review's Jae Thomas got 25 days with two off-leash dogs walking 2 to 5 miles a day, collars off at home, and saw service about 85% of the time, with gaps under dense tree cover (07/11/2026). What held it back: GPS accuracy and app connection lead Tractive's owner complaints, and the plan is sold only by the year or longer. Closest match we link to: Fi Series 3+. See Tractive vs Fi.
Tractive DOG 6 XL
For dogs above 44.1 lb. $53.40 on sale against $89 list, the same $108 plan, about $161 in year one; 2.5 oz, collars up to 1.6 in wide. Tractive's battery numbers disagree with each other: on tractive.com (10/14/2026) the spec table says "Up to 42 days" with Power Saving Zones and "Up to 20 days" without, the product card and battery page say "up to 6 weeks," the product-page FAQ says "up to 4 weeks," and the App Store text said "up to 1 month for XL trackers" (10/09/2026). I found no independent battery test. The XL Adventure version is $119. Closest match we link to: Fi Series 3+. Brand detail in our Tractive review.
Pawfit 3
For owners who want a recall feature that plays your voice through the tracker. $59.99, and Pawfit's plans start at $12.99/month; the Basic 1-year plan is $95.88, the cheapest annual plan in this list. Pawfit claims "Up to 8-day battery life," while its own reply to an owner on Trustpilot says the tracker "averages 4–5 days between charges." It weighs 0.96 oz, fits dogs from 7.7 lb, carries an 18-month warranty, and runs on what Pawfit calls "the standard 4G network" with no carrier named. Not enough owner reviews read yet (48 read on Trustpilot and the App Store, mostly UK reviewers, brand-wide); one wrote "it has too much of a delay to tell you the dog is out of bounds" (Trustpilot, 10/08/2026). Closest match we link to: Fi Mini.
Invoxia Biotracker
For owners who want resting heart and breathing data in the app. $119, plus Max GPS at $129.95/year for live tracking, about $249 in year one; the free Basic tier sends walk positions over Bluetooth only. Invoxia says the device "continuously measures heart rate, variability (HRV), and resting respiratory rate"; the app shows those readings, and that is all we claim for them. Up to 15 days of battery by Invoxia's figure, 1.3 oz, collars up to 1 in wide, LTE-M with no US carrier named, 1-year warranty outside Europe. Not enough owner reviews read yet (8 read on the App Store and Trustpilot); one owner wrote that its "GPS positioning and live tracking are significantly slower" (Trustpilot, 02/10/2026). Closest match we link to: Fi Series 3+.
Garmin Alpha T 20
A hunting dog system, not a phone tracker. The collar talks by VHF radio to a Garmin handheld, up to 9 mi (14.48 km) with "an unobstructed line of sight" (manual, pp.6 and 8), and needs no plan or phone app. The collar is $299.99 at Gun Dog Supply and from a third-party seller on Amazon (10/09/2026), but it does nothing without a handheld: Gun Dog Supply bundles run $999.98 with an Alpha 200 Plus, $1,099.98 with an Alpha 300, and $1,149.98 with an Alpha 300i. The manual lists up to 68 hr of battery; Gun Dog Supply lists 25 hr at 2.5-second updates. It weighs 8.8 oz. Its training buttons are Tone and Vibration only (manual, p.6). One owner calls the handheld interface "simply awful" (Gun Dog Supply, 12/18/2025). Closest match we link to: Fi Ultra, though Fi says Ultra is not for off-grid use.
PitPat Dog GPS Tracker
For owners who refuse a plan and accept fewer features. $229, and PitPat says "we pay for all the data it uses to talk to our cloud service for as long as you use it." It weighs 1.06 oz (30 g), fits dogs "from 12 weeks old," and PitPat gives no battery number: "at least several days between charges." I found no geofence or escape alert on PitPat's US page (10/09/2026). Not enough owner reviews read yet (28 read on Trustpilot and the App Store, almost all UK); one wrote, "the battery life is not good and I am having to charge every two days" (Trustpilot, 09/28/2026). Closest match we link to: Fi Mini. More in GPS dog trackers without a subscription.
Also without a store link
FitBark 2 is not a GPS tracker; FitBark says so on its store page, and it belongs in dog activity trackers. The Fi Series 3 is gone from Fi's catalog as of 10/09/2026, replaced by the Series 3+. Whistle shut its platform on 08/31/2025 after Tractive bought the brand, so Whistle collars no longer work (what happened to Whistle). The Jiobit Smart Tag product page now redirects to Life360 Pet GPS (10/09/2026). Cat-only trackers from Tractive and Pawfit are in cat GPS trackers.
How to choose
Tracker or GPS fence
A tracker tells you where the dog is and alerts you when it leaves a zone you draw; it does not stop the dog. A GPS fence collar adds feedback at the boundary: Halo lists "Sound," "Vibration," and "Static," and PetSafe's Guardian GPS lists tone, vibration, and static. Fences need training by the vendor's protocol; see wireless and GPS dog fences. Consult a certified trainer or your veterinarian before using a correction collar, especially with puppies, senior dogs or dogs with anxiety.
Network
LTE-M carriers differ even within one brand: AT&T for the Fi Series 3+, Verizon for the Fi Mini, T-Mobile plus satellite for the Fi Ultra. Tractive and FitBark name all three national carriers; Pawfit, Invoxia, and PitPat name none. Coverage not measured — check the carrier map for your address. Garmin's VHF radio needs no carrier but works only within range of your handheld.
Plan
Fi has no month-to-month plan and a 6-month minimum commitment. Tractive sells 1-, 2-, and 5-year terms in the US. Pawfit is the only one here whose US plan page shows a monthly option, $12.99/month. PitPat and Garmin need no plan. Small dogs: see GPS trackers for small dogs.
What it really costs in the first year
Before tax, year one runs from about $131 (FitBark GPS) and $155 (Tractive DOG 6) to about $488 (Fi Ultra) for cellular trackers, against a category median of $211. The plan is most of it: Fi's $189/year is more than the Fi Mini itself. Cheaper prepaid terms exist: Fi's 2-year plan is $339, Tractive's Premium 5-Year is $300, and FitBark's 1-year plan is $96. Fi's store catalog (api.tryfi.com, 10/14/2026) shows lower first-term prices for new buyers, $59 / $99 / $189 for the 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year plans against renewal prices of $99 / $189 / $339, plus a $20 activation fee on prepaid plans, but we could not confirm them at checkout, so our first-year totals use the renewal prices from Fi's billing article (edited 09/15/2026). Tractive Care, a loss and damage add-on, is $24/year on the 1-year plan.
What owners complain about across the category
Fi, a brand-level sample of 50 recent App Store reviews covering all Fi models (08/18/2026 to 10/07/2026): app and connection problems in 13, GPS accuracy in 8, plan price or cancellation in 5, battery in 4. Separately, 21 of the 50 object to the app requiring "Always" location permission. Tractive, a brand-level sample of 113 reviews (100 App Store, 13 Trustpilot) through 10/09/2026: GPS accuracy in 21, app connection in 19, customer support in 12. Garmin, 61 reviews on Gun Dog Supply, mostly about whole Alpha systems: battery came up in 19, usually as praise against older Garmin collars, and handheld connection, setup, or interface in 9. Pawfit, FitBark, Invoxia, and PitPat stay below 50 reviews read. App Store ratings: Fi 4.65 over 41,277, Tractive 4.7 over 45,681 (10/09/2026).
Safety and recalls
The CPSC recall API at saferproducts.gov returned no recalls for Fi (Barking Labs), Tractive, Garmin, Pawfit, FitBark, Invoxia, or PitPat, or for "GPS tracker," "pet tracker," and "dog collar," on 10/14/2026. Only PitPat gives an accuracy figure, "within a couple of metres" in normal conditions; Fi says only that the Series 3+ has a GPS signal "two times stronger than the Series 3."
FAQ
Do GPS dog collars really work?
Yes, within their network. In Treeline Review's test (07/11/2026), a Tractive DOG 6 placed the dog "within a few yards" and had service about 85% of the time, with gaps under dense tree cover. Owners report the misses too: GPS accuracy came up in 21 of 113 Tractive reviews and 8 of 50 Fi reviews we read. Check the carrier map for where your dog runs. Details in Tractive vs Fi.
Is there a dog tracker with no monthly fee?
Yes, two in our database. PitPat ($229) says it pays for the cellular data "for as long as you use it," and the Garmin Alpha T 20 uses VHF radio to a handheld, with no plan but $999.98 or more for a working system at Gun Dog Supply (10/09/2026). Invoxia's free tier sends positions over Bluetooth only. The list is in GPS dog trackers without a subscription.
Is AirTag or GPS better for dogs?
AirTag is not in our tracker database, so this page doesn't score it. Most trackers ranked here carry their own cellular radio and send live location and escape alerts through their apps, which is why they need a plan of $95.88 to $189 a year.
How much does a dog GPS tracker cost per year?
$95.88 to $189 a year for the plans in our database on 10/09/2026: Pawfit's Basic 1-year plan is the lowest, Tractive Basic is $108, Invoxia Max GPS $129.95, and Fi $189. Add the device in the first year: about $131 to $488 before tax for the ranked cellular trackers. PitPat and Garmin charge no plan. Tractive's terms are broken down in our Tractive review.

How we picked
What we checked: product, plan, warranty, and return pages for 17 trackers from 9 brands on 10/09/2026; the Garmin Alpha T 20 owner's manual (rev. January 2026); 332 owner reviews on the App Store, Trustpilot, and Gun Dog Supply through 10/09/2026; one independent field test with stated conditions (Treeline Review, Tractive DOG 6); and the CPSC recall database for every brand on 10/14/2026.
Each tracker gets the same five-point check: vendor specs, first-year cost against the category median of $211, warranty and returns, owner reports, and whether an app or plan is mandatory (how we research). Only trackers sold for dogs today are ranked. Trackers we can link to come first; inside each group the order is the score, and ties go to the lower first-year cost. First-year cost is the device, shipping, and 12 months of the plan that live GPS needs, before sales tax, which varies by state.
