PetSafe Review: Seven ScoopFree Litter Boxes, What a Year Costs, and What Else PetSafe Makes
7 self-cleaning litter boxes, $99.95 to $549.99. PetSafe sells seven ScoopFree self-cleaning litter boxes on petsafe.com, from $99.95 for the Crystal Classic to $549.99 for the new OpenSky (10/14/2026), and the line splits on litter, not on price. Four rake boxes run only on PetSafe's disposable crystal trays at $22.50 each, so a $129.99 box costs about $458 in its first year. The ScoopFree Clumping ($279.99, about $311 in year one) and the rotating SmartSpin ($399.99, about $431) take ordinary clumping litter. Every model carries the same 1-year warranty and 45-day return window, and we read only 18 owner reviews across the line, too few for a complaint index.

The lineup
PetSafe's own store lists seven self-cleaning boxes; the category page listed no ScoopFree Ultra or Original on 10/09/2026, and the seven product pages showed the same prices on 10/14/2026. First-year cost is the petsafe.com price plus a year of the consumable PetSafe prints an interval for, at one cat, before sales tax and before litter for the clumping boxes.

The OpenSky went on petsafe.com on 02/26/2026 and the Crystal Classic on 07/07/2023, per the store's own product data. The Clumping showed "Add to Cart" on its product page and "Out of Stock" on the category page on 10/09/2026, and the same split was there on 10/14/2026. Retail prices on 10/09/2026: PetSmart had the SmartSpin at $399.99 against a struck-through $479.99, the Crystal Plus at $180.99 (list $249.99), and the Crystal Smart front-entry at $299.95. Each model's specs, with a source under every value, are on its spec card, linked from the table at the top of this page.
Warranty and returns
Every ScoopFree box gets one year. The SmartSpin page and policy say products are "free from defects in material or workmanship for one (1) year from the Delivery Date," non-transferable, with proof of purchase from an authorized reseller or registration within 30 days. The OpenSky guide prints "1-Year Limited Warranty" on its back page. Exclusions on the policy page include units from "unauthorized Internet sites," used or refurbished units, and "damage caused by any animal," and the crystal-box manuals add that "Using a different tray or litter may void the product warranty." No extended plan is offered.
Returns from petsafe.com or by phone run 45 days: "All returns must be re-sellable, which is in original condition and in original packaging," original shipping is not refunded, and "Returns must be shipped prepaid freight." Shipping is free by FedEx Ground Home on orders over $49 to the contiguous US; Alaska and Hawaii are "not eligible for free or standard shipping." The shipping policy says nothing about sales tax (petsafe.com, 10/14/2026), and we did not reach checkout.
Apps and what works without them
No ScoopFree box has a paid plan: none of the seven product pages or guides names one (petsafe.com, 10/09/2026), and four of the seven have no app at all. The Crystal Classic, Legacy, Crystal Plus, and Clumping run on detection sensors, a countdown, and a rake button.
The Crystal Smart works without Wi-Fi: its manual documents a "Wi-Fi is not enabled" state, and the box keeps its 20-minute countdown and manual rake button; the My PetSafe app adds countdown changes, activity logs, and tray reminders. The SmartSpin and OpenSky guides both say "Once you've connected the litter box to the app, it's ready to use," which makes pairing part of setup, though both have a cleaning button on the unit. All three Wi-Fi boxes are 2.4 GHz only, and PetSafe's SmartSpin support page adds "without the use of an extender or mesh network."
The apps are where PetSafe scores lowest with owners. On the App Store (10/09/2026) My PetSafe holds 3.7 of 5 over 779 ratings and PetSafe Pet Companion, the SmartSpin app, 2.5 over 49. Both privacy labels list "Usage Data (Product Interaction)" as Data Linked to You and contact info as Data Not Linked to You. PetSafe's support article for the OpenSky links its "ScoopFree Litter Box app" to the Pet Companion listings on both stores, so they are one app; on Google Play (10/14/2026) Pet Companion holds 2.3 of 5 over 89 reviews, and its Data safety section says "No data shared with third parties" and lists Location and Personal info as data the app may collect.
Consumables for a year
The tray is the cost of a crystal ScoopFree. The Classic, Legacy, Crystal Plus and Pro, and Crystal Smart take only PetSafe's disposable crystal trays: "DO NOT use any type of clay litter, natural litter or any other crystal litter" and "DO NOT use any other tray" (Legacy manual, SFE400-2352/1). A 2-pack is $44.99, or $22.50 a tray; the 3-pack ($73.49) and 6-pack ($139.99) cost more per tray on 10/09/2026. PetSafe's chart gives a tray 20–30 days for one cat, 10–15 for two, and 7–10 for three. That is 12–18 trays and $270–$405 a year for one cat, about $328 at 25 days, and roughly double for two cats.
A reusable path exists: the ScoopFree Reusable Tray is $49.95 and the stainless steel version $49.99, both refilled with ScoopFree Premium Crystal Litter only. We have no price for the loose litter, so no yearly figure.
The clumping boxes cost little to run. Clumping and SmartSpin liners are $14.99 for 25, weekly for one cat, about $31 a year, and the Clumping quick start says the bin "can be used unlined." OpenSky liners are their own part, $11.49 for 15 and "only compatible with the ScoopFree OpenSky," about $20 a year at the guide's two-week interval. The SmartSpin and OpenSky deodorizers ($14.99 for two, 15 days each) are optional; replaced on schedule they would add about $180 a year. Litter for the clumping boxes is your choice and is not in our totals.
Recalls
The CPSC recall database returned no results for "ScoopFree," "OpenSky," "Crystal Classic," or "litter box" on 10/09/2026 (saferproducts.gov API and cpsc.gov/Recalls), and the saferproducts.gov API returned none again on 10/14/2026. The only recall on record for PetSafe's maker, Radio Systems Corporation, is #10283 from 06/29/2010: power adapters sold with PetSafe heated pet beds, recalled for fire hazard, not a litter box.
Claimed vs independent
PetSafe prints no decibel figure for any ScoopFree, and the independent record is thin.
| Quantity | PetSafe says | Independent | Who, when, conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tray life, two cats | 10–15 days (tray chart) | about six days per tray | Sarah Griffiths, PetsRadar, 12/11/2020; two cats, ScoopFree Ultra (the legacy model this tray system came from) |
| SmartSpin noise | no dB; "quietly sifts away waste" | "runs quietly," no meter reading | Katelynn Sobus, cats.com, 10/03/2025; multi-cat home with senior cats, over a month |
| SmartSpin size | no dimensions on petsafe.com | 20.9 x 18.9 x 26.4 in, 25 lb, entry about 12 in | same cats.com review |
| Legacy durability | 1-year warranty | lasted three years until a plastic piece of the lifting lid snapped | Mashable, refreshed 03/2026; one cat |
Cats.com scored the SmartSpin 3.6 of 5 and noted the app has no cleaning schedule, only a delay of up to an hour. A video chapter titled "Noise Levels" on the cats.com YouTube channel (04/30/2025) exists, but we could not read its value, so the SmartSpin remains not independently measured for noise.
What owners say
Not enough owner reviews read yet (18 read on TheCatSite, the App Store, Google Play, and YouTube comments through 10/09/2026), so we publish no Owner Complaint Index for PetSafe. By model: 8 for the Crystal Pro Legacy, 6 for the Crystal Smart, 4 for the SmartSpin, none for the Clumping, Crystal Plus, Classic, or OpenSky. PetSmart lists 679 reviews of the SmartSpin and 253 of the Crystal Plus, but we did not read their text, and Chewy blocked our tools on 10/09/2026 and 10/14/2026.
In what we read, app and Wi-Fi trouble leads (4 mentions), then rake or motor faults (2). A SmartSpin owner on the App Store (05/26/2025): "I figured out the WiFi Bluetooth issue. It took me hours." A Legacy owner on TheCatSite (08/11/2021): "loved it in the beginning but after awhile the rake hand would get stuck in the middle." The praise is about years of service: "I've had the ScoopFree for 10 years now with no problems, except the rake did rust." (TheCatSite, 03/08/2015). PetSafe's own support site carries five articles on the Clumping's rake getting stuck or flashing error lights, which shows where owners call in without giving a count.
Feeders, fountains, and fences
PetSafe makes products in three more categories we cover, and its My PetSafe app lists the Smart Feed feeder and a Guardian GPS fence among compatible devices (App Store, 10/09/2026). Those models sit in our feeder, fountain, and fence databases, with prices and specs on the category pages rather than here:
- Automatic feeders: the Smart Feed (2nd generation) and the Healthy Pet Simply Feed, on best automatic cat feeders and best automatic dog feeders.
- Drinkwell water fountains: five models, among them the Platinum, Pagoda, and Butterfly, on best cat water fountains and best dog water fountains.
- Dog fences: the Guardian GPS 2.0, two wireless fences (Stay & Play Compact and Wireless Pet Containment), and two in-ground systems (Basic and YardMax), on best wireless dog fences and best underground dog fences. All five list static correction among their correction types on petsafe.com; consult a trainer or veterinarian before using any correction collar.
Buy if / Skip if
What we checked: seven ScoopFree product pages and their store data, four user guides and manuals (SFE400-2352/1, 400-2625, L400-2472/1, 400-2659/2), the SmartSpin guide, the return, warranty, and shipping policies, and both app listings on 10/09/2026; 18 owner reviews and posts; cats.com, PetsRadar, and Mashable reviews; the CPSC recall database on 10/09/2026; the seven prices and the CPSC database again on 10/14/2026.
Buy if: you want a rotating box from PetSafe that takes any clumping litter, your cats are 2.5 to 25 lb, and a $31-a-year liner bill matters more to you than a long owner record; about $431 in year one. Skip if: you won't pair a phone during setup, your router is mesh-only, or you want a published noise figure.
Buy if: you want the lowest first-year cost in the line, about $311, with no app, no Wi-Fi, and no proprietary trays. Skip if: you need it this week while PetSafe's own pages disagree on stock, or you want to read owner reviews first, since we found none to read.
Buy if: you already use crystal litter, have one cat under 15 lb, and accept about $328 a year in trays. Skip if: you have two or more cats, where the chart doubles the tray count, or you want to choose your own litter.
Buy if: your cat won't use a hooded box or weighs up to 33 lb, and you'll buy a model on the market since 02/26/2026. Skip if: you want owner reviews or an app rating behind a $549.99 purchase; we found neither. The category comparison is on best automatic litter boxes; for big cats, large-cat litter boxes.
Questions people ask
Is PetSafe a good brand for self-cleaning litter boxes?
Yes on purchase price, mixed on running cost. PetSafe sells the two cheapest boxes in our database, the Crystal Classic at $99.95 and the Crystal Pro Legacy at $129.99 (petsafe.com, 10/14/2026), but its crystal boxes are among the costliest to run at about $328 a year in trays; the Clumping and SmartSpin cost about $31 a year in liners. Owner data is thin: 18 reviews read across seven models. See cheap automatic litter boxes.
What app does PetSafe use?
Three, by model. The Crystal Smart uses My PetSafe (3.7 of 5 over 779 App Store ratings on 10/09/2026), the SmartSpin uses PetSafe Pet Companion (2.5 over 49), and the OpenSky guide names the ScoopFree Litter Box app. The other four ScoopFree boxes have no app, and none needs a paid plan.
Can you use regular litter in a PetSafe ScoopFree?
Only in the ScoopFree Clumping, SmartSpin, and OpenSky. The crystal boxes take PetSafe's crystal trays only, and PetSafe's support page says clumping litter in them "can result in damage." The OpenSky guide warns that pine or tofu litter "may not be compatible." Each model's litter rules are on its spec card, linked from the table at the top of this page.
How long does a ScoopFree tray last?
20–30 days for one cat, 10–15 days for two, and 7–10 for three, per PetSafe's chart in the Legacy manual and the Crystal Plus guide. One PetsRadar reviewer with two cats got about six days per tray (12/11/2020). At $22.50 a tray in the 2-pack, one cat costs $270–$405 a year.
What is PetSafe's warranty on litter boxes?
One year from the delivery date, non-transferable, for every ScoopFree on 10/09/2026, with proof of purchase from an authorized reseller. Returns run 45 days from petsafe.com, in re-sellable condition and original packaging, with return shipping on you. No extended warranty is sold.
