We track 5 dog fences. Our top pick is PetSafe YardMax® Rechargeable In-Ground Fence™, scored 9.5/10. Prices run $134.99 to $474.99, checked 10/09/2026.

The PetSafe YardMax Rechargeable In-Ground Fence is the underground kit we'd point most yards to: $304.99 at petsafe.com on 10/09/2026, 500 ft of wire for about 1/3 acre, a rechargeable collar rated "up to 3 months" per charge, no plan, and about $305 in the first year before tax. If price matters most, the PetSafe Basic In-Ground is $134.99 on sale and about $184 in year one with batteries. Larger properties: see SportDOG and eXtreme.

Our top pick

PetSafe YardMax Rechargeable In-Ground Fence (our top pick)

For dogs from 5 lb and 6 months, neck 6 to 28 in, in a yard that may grow. $304.99 at petsafe.com and Academy on 10/09/2026, free shipping, 500 ft of 20-gauge wire for "up to a 1/3-acre yard." The collar recharges and lasts "up to 3 months depending on the frequency of use" (manual), so there's no battery to buy. Level 1 is tone-only, levels 2 to 6 static. In "YardMax® mode (A), the warning zone begins at the boundary wire"; Traditional mode (B) is the alternative. What held it back: the page says the kit expands to 5.5 acres, the manual says 10 acres, and an extra collar is $160.99. First year: about $305 before tax.

PetSafe Basic In-Ground Fence (lowest first-year cost)

For dogs from 8 lb and 6 months, neck 6 to 26 in, on a tight budget. $134.99 sale, $164.99 list at petsafe.com on 10/09/2026, free shipping, 500 ft of wire for 1/3 acre, expandable to 5 acres. The collar takes an RFA-67 battery that PetSafe says lasts "1-3 months, depending on use"; a 2-pack is $7.99. What held it back: the recurring battery cost, and one petsafe.com owner writing that collars needed replacing "Every 18 month" (05/13/2023). First year: about $151 to $184 before tax, by battery life.

SportDOG Rechargeable In-Ground Fence (SDF-100C)

For bigger yards from day one: 1,000 ft of wire and 100 flags cover "1 1/3 acre," expandable to 100 acres (manual p6). $324.99 at sportdog.com on 10/09/2026; Amazon showed $274.99. The collar recharges in 2 hours, "Average battery life is 2 months" (manual p7), and it is "submersible to 25 feet." Warranty: 2 years with registration. Neck 5 to 22 in; minimum weight is "10 lbs. or more" on the page and "over 8 pounds" in the manual. First year: $324.99 before tax; SportDOG's site banner reads "FREE SHIPPING on orders $89+" while its shipping policy page still says "flat rate shipping of $9.95 to the contiguous U.S." (both 10/14/2026). Closest match we link to: the PetSafe YardMax.

SportDOG Contain + Train System (SDF-CT)

For an owner who also wants a handheld remote trainer, "Up to 500 yards," in the same kit. $474.99 at sportdog.com, $399.99 on Amazon on 10/09/2026. The box has 1,000 ft of 20-gauge wire and 100 flags, expandable to 100 acres. The collar battery averages "168 hours in Training and Contain + Train modes, and 6 months in Containment mode" (manual p5). Dogs over 10 lb; 2-year warranty. Amazon's review topics rate collar size negative: "not good for dogs under about 30 lbs." First year: $474.99 before tax. Closest match we link to: the PetSafe YardMax.

eXtreme Dog Fence Pro Grade (Active collar)

For heavier wire: Extreme lists "16 gauge with polyethylene jacket" wire and a "10 Acre Capacity" transmitter. The 500-ft, one-collar kit is $363.28 sale, $399.95 list at extremedogfence.com on 10/09/2026. The 1.1-oz collar runs on a "proprietary 6v battery, which lasts an average of 4 months." Warranty: 10 years with registration, excluding the wire; returns within 30 days with a 20% restocking fee. Minimum dog weight, puppy age, and a training schedule are not on the product page, and extremedogfence.com rate-limited our requests on 10/09 and 10/14/2026, so we have none to quote. First year: $363.28 before batteries and tax. Closest match we link to: the PetSafe Basic In-Ground.

Correction type and levels

All five kits have a tone-only or beep-only setting; each maker uses its own scale and words:

  • PetSafe YardMax: "The static correction levels increase in strength from 2 to 6, with level 1 being tone only (no correction), and level 6 being the maximum setting." Static times out after "15 seconds of continuous correction."
  • PetSafe Basic: "4 levels of correction plus a tone-only setting" (manual p5): level 1 tone only, levels 2 to 5 static, capped at 15 seconds, with "Anti-Linger Prevention" and "Run-Through Prevention" (p15).
  • SportDOG SDF-100C: "Setting 1 is vibration and tone only, and Settings 2-8 are static stimulation levels" (manual p8); "Anti-Linger" delivers static "if your dog stays in the warning zone too long."
  • SportDOG SDF-CT: "7 levels of static stimulation" plus a "Beep and Vibration Only" mode.
  • eXtreme Pro Grade: "7 correction levels (1-7) and a beep only level (0)"; the page does not name the correction type.

We don't rate correction methods. We found no AVMA position statement on them; the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's 2021 position statement on dog training says aversive methods, "which, by definition, rely on application of force, pain, or emotional or physical discomfort," "should not be used in canine training or for the treatment of behavioral disorders" (avsab.org, read 10/14/2026).

Training is required

PetSafe Basic: "During the first 2 weeks of training, do not use the system without direct supervision," then Day 1 tone-only through Days 9–30 (manual p21). YardMax: "typically takes a couple of weeks," then monitoring on Days 15–30. SportDOG's SDF-100C starts with three 10 to 15 minute "BOUNDARY FLAG AWARENESS" sessions and runs to Day 30; training "can be started once your dog can learn basic obedience commands like 'sit' and 'stay'" (p19). Extreme's schedule is not on its product page.

Consult a certified trainer or your veterinarian before using a correction collar, especially with puppies, senior dogs or dogs with anxiety.

What it really costs in the first year

Our first-year figure adds price, shipping as shown on 10/09/2026, and a year of collar batteries at the maker's interval. No kit needs a plan; sales tax varies by state and is left out.

Extreme's battery price was not readable on 10/09 or 10/14/2026 (accessory pages rate-limited); one Amazon owner puts it at "about $10 a battery." A second dog adds a collar: $90.99 to $204.99 across the five. Dealer installation is outside these totals; we have no installer quotes in our files.

What owners complain about

Only the eXtreme Pro Grade passes our 50-review threshold: 64 excerpts from Amazon's review-topic blocks on two listings (dates hidden), read 10/09/2026. Battery life came up in 10, customer support in 6, collar fit and durability in 5, and battery reports split: "those batteries last just a few weeks" against "we just replaced our first battery after 8 months of daily use."

SportDOG SDF-100C: Not enough owner reviews read yet (36 read: 32 Amazon excerpts, 4 Gun Dog Supply reviews); Amazon's topic summary rates "wire quality" negative over 25 mentions. SDF-CT: Not enough owner reviews read yet (32 Amazon excerpts). PetSafe: we don't count reviews on the brand's own site, where the YardMax shows 4.3 of 5 over 156 (46 of the newest 50 incentivized, Influenster) and the Basic 4.2 over 124 (36 of 50).

Safety and recalls

The CPSC recall database returned no recalls for PetSafe, SportDOG, or eXtreme Dog Fence fences and collars on 10/09/2026 or on 10/14/2026 (saferproducts.gov Recall API). The only hit for Radio Systems Corporation, which makes both PetSafe and SportDOG, was heated pet bed adapters on 06/29/2010. Before trenching, PetSafe's manuals say: "Have all underground cables marked before you dig to bury your wire. In most areas, this is a free service."

FAQ

How much wire comes in the box?

500 ft in the PetSafe YardMax and Basic kits, about 1/3 acre, and 1,000 ft in SportDOG's SDF-100C and SDF-CT, rated for 1 1/3 acre. Extreme's Pro Grade starts at 500 ft, with kits up to 4,500 ft. PetSafe's extra 500-ft spool with 50 flags was $74.99 on 10/09/2026.

How deep do you bury dog fence wire?

1 to 3 inches, per PetSafe: "Cut a trench 1 to 3 in. deep along your planned boundary. It only needs to be as wide as the wire" (Basic manual YU400-1751/2, p18); the YardMax manual gives the same range. SportDOG's support article says "Bury your wire 2-3 inches deep" (support.sportdog.com, 10/14/2026); Extreme's depth is not in our files, its site having rate-limited us on 10/09 and 10/14/2026. Have underground cables marked first; PetSafe's manuals call it "a free service" in most areas.

Do underground fences work for large dogs?

Yes, within each collar's neck range: 6 to 28 in for the YardMax, 6 to 26 in for the Basic, and 5 to 22 in for the SportDOG SDF-100C. None of the five makers prints a maximum dog weight, and Amazon review topics flag the SDF-CT collar as large for smaller dogs (wireless dog fence roundup).

How much does an underground dog fence cost?

$134.99 to $474.99 for the kits on this page on 10/09/2026, before tax, and about $151 to $475 in the first year with collar batteries. Bigger yards add wire: $74.99 per 500-ft PetSafe spool, $59.95 per SportDOG Wire & Flag Kit. Dealer installation is extra, and we have no installer quotes in our files.

How we picked

What we checked: five product pages and four manuals on 10/09/2026; prices on the makers' sites, Amazon, and Academy; 132 owner review excerpts on Amazon and Gun Dog Supply, plus PetSafe's own review widget, read but not counted; and the CPSC recall database on 10/09 and 10/14/2026. On 10/14/2026 we re-checked the two kits we link to: petsafe.com still listed the YardMax at $304.99 and the Basic at $134.99. No independent test with stated conditions exists for any of the five.

Each kit gets our five-point check: specs, first-year cost against the category median ($325), warranty and returns, owner reports, and whether a plan is required (how we research). Kits we can link to come first. The SportDOG SDF-100A is out: its sportdog.com page returned a 404 on 10/09/2026.
