Which activity tracker to buy

We track 7 dog trackers. Our top pick is Fi Mini, scored 9/10. 2 of 7 with a listed plan status work with no subscription. Prices run $34.95 to $229, checked 10/09/2026.

The Fi Mini is the dog activity tracker we'd point you to: it scores the same 9.0 as the Fi Series 3+ and costs less, $99 against $129, or about $297 in year one against $318 before tax (Fi billing article, edited 09/15/2026). For dogs it counts steps and logs the behaviors Fi lists for its collars, "sleeping, barking, licking, scratching, eating, and drinking patterns," adds GPS, and Fi rates the battery at "up to 2 months" (help center, 09/25/2026). The Series 3+ makes sense if you want Fi's longer claim, "Up to 3 months" for a dog mostly at home, and a charging base. For step and sleep numbers without GPS, the FitBark 2 is $39.95 with no subscription and no store link here. None of these trackers diagnoses anything.

Our top pick
Fi Mini$99 plus $9 shipping and a $189/year membership, about $297 in year one. Buy it if you want steps, behavior logs, and GPS at Fi's lowest price, on a dog under 10 lb or any harness, and can charge by cable every few weeks; it scores the same 9.0 as the Series 3+.
For the longest battery claim
Fi Series 3+$129 plus $189/year, about $318 in year one. Buy it if you want Fi's "Up to 3 months" claim at low activity and a charging base in the box.

Fi Mini (our top pick)

For activity data and GPS at Fi's lowest price, on a dog under 10 lb ("perfect for small dogs under 10 pounds," Fi's launch post, 08/25/2025) or on a harness it clips onto. $99 (Fi billing article, edited 09/15/2026), a $9 flat shipping fee under a $100 subtotal, and a required membership: $189/year by default, $99 for 6 months, or $339 for 2 years. About $297 in year one before tax, $21 less than the Series 3+, which gets the same 9.0 score. Dogs get the same behavior tracking as the Series 3+. 0.56 oz (16 g), Verizon LTE-M, USB-C charging, "up to 2 months" of battery (help center, 09/25/2026) against "3-week" in the launch post.

What held it back: shorter battery claim than the Series 3+, no charging base, a 1-year warranty that holds only while a membership is active, and 2 Mini-specific reviews among the 50 we read. Small breeds: best GPS trackers for small dogs.

Fi Series 3+

For activity data and GPS on one collar, charged every few weeks rather than every few days. $129 (Fi billing article, edited 09/15/2026), free shipping, and the same required membership as the Mini. The app logs steps and the behaviors above, alerts you when your dog leaves a Safe Zone, and updates "every few seconds" in Lost Mode. AT&T LTE-M; a Fi Base in the box charges it; bands from XS (under 10 lb) to XL (95 lb and up).

Fi's battery table: "Up to 3 months" at low activity, "4 to 6 weeks" moderate, "Up to 2 weeks" high. Not independently measured; one App Store owner reports "never more than 5 to 6 days" (09/22/2026). What held it back: the highest first-year cost here, about $318, for the same 9.0 score as the Mini; a 1-year warranty that holds only while a membership is active; and cancellation complaints.

FitBark 2

For activity and sleep numbers only; FitBark sells it as the "FitBark 2 Pet Health Monitor." "FitBark 2 devices are not GPS trackers and come exclusively without a monthly fee" (fitbark.com, 10/09/2026). $39.95 on sale against $69.95 list, free shipping: about $40 in year one. The app shows BarkPoints, rest and play time, a "Nocturnal sleep score," an "Overall health index," calories, and distance, synced over Bluetooth. 0.35 oz (10 g), dogs from 3 lb, battery "up to 6 months, depending on how frequently you sync," 2-year warranty.

What held it back: no location at all, "100% water proof" with no IP rating, a refurbished option shown as "Out of stock" while new units read "Ready to ship" (10/14/2026), and 20 brand-level Trustpilot reviews read, one saying "It is constantly going off line" (08/01/2026). Closest match we link to: Fi Series 3+, which adds GPS but needs a plan.

FitBark GPS 2nd Gen

For GPS plus FitBark's activity and sleep data at a low device price. $34.95 on sale against $69.95 list (fitbark.com, 10/09/2026), and a required plan: $60 for 6 months, $96 for a year, down to $240 for 5 years. First year: about $131 on the 1-year plan, $155 on two 6-month terms. "Our alerts take 3 minutes on average to arrive" (FAQ). Battery: "up to 4 weeks" on daily walks, "up to 6 hours" in live tracking. 0.56 oz (16 g), dogs from 5 lb, IP67, 2-year warranty.

What held it back: FitBark itself says it is not for you if "You don't have Wi-Fi in your house"; the same "Out of stock" label as the FitBark 2; and 24 reviews read, one reporting "it only last half a day from full charge" (Trustpilot, 09/20/2026). Closest match we link to: Fi Mini.

Tractive DOG 6

For the lowest-cost GPS tracker here with activity, sleep, and vitals in the app. $47.40 on sale against $79 list (tractive.com, 10/09/2026; page markup ends the sale 12/31/2026), free shipping, and the $108 Basic 1-Year Plan: about $155. Tractive lists activity goals, sleep, resting heart and respiratory rate "collected while they're sleeping or resting," bark and scratch monitoring, and Health Alerts, with the footnote "Tractive is not a medical device."

Battery: "Up to 14 days" with Power Saving Zones, "Up to 6 days" without; Treeline Review (Jae Thomas, 07/11/2026) got 25 days with two off-leash dogs walking about 2 to 5 miles a day, collars off at home, default mode. Dogs above 8.8 lb, 1.4 oz. What held it back: GPS accuracy (21 of 113 brand-level reviews) and support lead the complaints. Warranty: 2 years (Tractive's warranty policy, edited 06/23/2026). Closest match we link to: Fi Series 3+. Brand detail: Tractive review.

Invoxia Minitailz Biotracker

For vitals and sleep data without paying for GPS. Invoxia's US buy page lists offers at $119 and $219 (10/09/2026); Invoxia's help center (edited 06/01/2026) explains the $219 as the Biotracker 2026 Edition plus one year of Max GPS, which it prices at $129.90 against the product page's $129.95. The free Basic tier covers "Resting heart and breathing rate, sleep score and activity tracking, 7 days of history, walk positions sent over Bluetooth." Live tracking needs Max GPS at $129.95/year: about $249 in year one, or $119 on Basic. Invoxia says the device "continuously measures heart rate, variability (HRV), and resting respiratory rate."

Battery "from a few days up to 15 days" (FAQ); 1.3 oz (37 g), IP67. What held it back: a 1-year US warranty ("2 years in Europe"), no Bluetooth range, carrier, or minimum dog weight stated, and 8 reviews read, one saying "Customer support non existent" (Trustpilot, 08/04/2026). Closest match we link to: Fi Series 3+.

PitPat Dog GPS Tracker

For cellular GPS with no plan at all. $229 on pitpat.com/us (10/09/2026); PitPat says "we pay for all the data it uses to talk to our cloud service for as long as you use it." The app shows exercise, rest, calories, distance, steps, and weight; live mode updates "about every 10 seconds." Battery has no number: "at least several days between charges." 1.06 oz (30 g), dogs from 12 weeks, IP67, 1-year warranty, 42-day returns.

What held it back: no geofences or escape alerts, a shipping cost that appears only in the page's product data ($0 for the US, 10/14/2026), and 28 reviews read, almost all from UK buyers; one, 10/09/2026: "It spends most of its time on the charger." Closest match we link to: Fi Series 3+. More plan-free options: GPS dog trackers without a subscription.

What the app shows

All seven show activity and rest; they differ on behavior and vital signs, and everything in the health column is the vendor's description, not a reading we checked. Vendor pages, 10/09/2026:

The app shows a change in a number; it doesn't tell you why. Tractive's FAQ draws the same line: "medical advice and diagnosis should always be sought from a veterinarian." If a trend worries you, take the screenshots to your vet.

FAQ

Can a dog activity tracker detect illness?

No. These trackers record activity, rest, and on some models resting heart or breathing rate, and the app shows changes in those numbers. Tractive states on its product page that "Tractive is not a medical device" and is "not intended to diagnose health conditions" (10/09/2026). If the app shows a change that concerns you, or your dog seems unwell, talk to your veterinarian. Comparison of the GPS side: best GPS dog collars.

Do dog activity trackers need a subscription?

Not all of them. FitBark 2 has none and no GPS; PitPat has cellular GPS with no plan; Invoxia's Basic tier is free with Bluetooth-only positions. Fi ($189/year), Tractive ($108/year), and FitBark GPS ($96/year) require a plan for the tracker to work (vendor pages, 10/09/2026). More plan-free options: GPS dog trackers without a subscription.

Is Tractive or Fi better for activity tracking?

Fi logs more behaviors (barking, licking, scratching, eating, drinking); Tractive adds resting heart and respiratory rate. The Fi Series 3+ battery claim is "Up to 3 months" at low activity against Tractive's "Up to 14 days" with Power Saving Zones, and Tractive costs less in year one: about $155 against $297 for the Fi Mini and $318 for the Series 3+ (vendor pages, 10/09/2026). Full breakdown: Tractive vs Fi.

How we picked

What we checked: US product, plan, and help pages of Fi, FitBark, Tractive, Invoxia, and PitPat; owner reviews (50 Fi App Store, 113 Tractive App Store and Trustpilot, 20 to 28 each for FitBark and PitPat, 8 for Invoxia), all on 10/09/2026; and the CPSC recall API at saferproducts.gov, which listed no recall for any of the five brands on 10/14/2026. One independent measurement turned up: Treeline Review's battery test of the Tractive DOG 6.

Each tracker gets the same five-point check: vendor specs, first-year cost against the GPS-tracker median ($216; the FitBark 2, which has no GPS, is checked in its own activity-tracker group), warranty and returns, owner reports, and whether a plan is mandatory (how we research). Trackers we link to come first, then the order is the score; ties go to the lower first-year cost. Out of the ranking: Whistle Health, dead since the Whistle platform closed on 08/31/2025 (what happened to Whistle), and the Fi Series 3, replaced by the Series 3+.
