Tractive vs Fi: Which GPS Dog Tracker to Buy

Short answer

Fi is the one to buy if you want to charge rarely: Fi rates the Series 3+ at "Up to 3 months" for a dog that is mostly at home, against "Up to 14 days" with Power Saving Zones for the Tractive DOG 6 (vendor pages, 10/09/2026). Tractive is the one that costs less: $47.40 on sale plus a $108 Basic plan, about $155 in year one before tax, against $129 plus $189, about $318, for Fi. Tractive also has the only independent battery result of the two: 25 days in Treeline Review's test. Both need a plan to track at all.

Pick Fi Series 3+ if

you want the longest battery claim (up to 3 months at low activity), a collar band sized from XS to XL with a charging base in the box, and behavior logs (barking, licking, scratching, eating, drinking), and you accept about $318 in year one and $189 a year after.

Tractive DOG 6 is the better fit if

year-one cost decides it (about $155, or about $187 at list price), you want to keep your own collar, you want the only independently tested battery of the two (25 days, Treeline Review), or you want resting heart and respiratory rate in the app. Plans run $108 a year after that. Tractive has no store link here; closest match we link to: Fi Series 3+. More options: best GPS dog collars.

Price and what you actually pay in year one

Tractive's sale is a site-wide "Get 40% Off Smart Dog Trackers" banner; the page markup ends it on 12/31/2026, and at the $79 list price year one would be about $187. Tractive's US plan page sells Basic only by the year or two years; its FAQ says monthly billing is "available only for Basic plans in selected countries." Fi places you on the 1-year plan by default when you activate, gives you 7 days to switch, and starts the membership on its own "If your tracker is not activated within 7 days of shipping." Fi's store catalog (api.tryfi.com, 10/14/2026) shows lower first-term prices for new buyers, $59 / $99 / $189 for the 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year plans against renewal prices of $99 / $189 / $339, plus a $20 activation fee on prepaid plans, but we could not confirm them at checkout, so our first-year totals use the renewal prices from Fi's billing article (edited 09/15/2026). Sales tax varies by state and is not in these totals. Tractive's tiers line by line: Tractive review.

Battery and GPS: claimed vs measured

Battery life

25 days ('Up to 14 days, but lasted 25 days during testing with daily use')
Jae Thomas, treelinereview.com · 07/11/2026 · two off-leash dogs, walks ~2–5 mi/day, collars off at home; default dynamic mode; Power Saving Zone use not stated; Colorado Front Range; dog weight not stated

Fi claims weeks to months; Tractive claims days to two weeks, and Tractive is the only one with an outside test. Tractive DOG 6: "Up to 14 days" with Power Saving Zones and "Up to 6 days" without (compare table); "Frequent LIVE Tracking... will drain the battery more quickly." Treeline Review (Jae Thomas, 07/11/2026) reported 25 days with two off-leash dogs walking about 2 to 5 miles a day, collars off at home, default mode, on Colorado's Front Range, without saying whether Power Saving Zones were on. One App Store owner reports the opposite end: "Battery lasts only 4 days on low power mode" (08/12/2026).

Fi Series 3+: "Up to 3 months" at low activity ("Mostly at home or on short walks"), "4 to 6 weeks" moderate, "Up to 2 weeks" for a dog outdoors most of the day, "about 2 days" in Lost Mode; Fi's compare article adds "1.5-2 months in most conditions." Not independently measured. Owners split: "only have to charge every other week or so" (App Store, 09/12/2026) against "never more than 5 to 6 days" (09/22/2026).

GPS accuracy: neither vendor prints a distance. Fi says the Series 3+ has a "GPS signal that is two times stronger than the Series 3." Treeline's reviewer found the DOG 6 placed the dog "within a few yards each time," with service about 85% of the time and gaps in deep backcountry and dense tree cover. Live updates: every 2 to 3 seconds on Tractive, "every few seconds" in Fi's Lost Mode; between those, Tractive updates every 2 to 60 minutes and Fi doesn't give an interval. Coverage is not measured: check the carrier map for your address (AT&T for Fi; AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile for Tractive).

App, subscription and what works offline

Neither tracker is useful without its plan, and Fi says so more plainly: "The Fi Tracker will only work with an active membership," and "Without an active Fi Membership, Lost Mode is not available." Tractive says its built-in SIM's fees "are covered with your subscription" and that each plan "is tied to a single tracker"; its plans FAQ adds, "Without a subscription, your tracker can't communicate its location to you" (edited 03/24/2026).

What the plan buys differs. Tractive Basic ($108) includes Live Tracking, activity, sleep, and "Heart & Respiratory Rate Monitoring," but only 24-hour location history; family sharing, worldwide coverage, and 365-day history need Premium at $120/year. Fi's one membership covers Safe Zone escape alerts, Lost Mode, and behavior tracking: "sleeping, barking, licking, scratching, eating, and drinking patterns, along with counting your pet's steps." At home, Tractive's Radar Mode uses Bluetooth "to locate your pet indoors"; Fi uses the Fi Base and your Wi-Fi.

Canceling: Tractive offers a "30-day money-back guarantee" on all plans. Fi refunds an auto-renewal only if you cancel within 30 days. App Store ratings on 10/09/2026: Tractive 4.7 over 45,681, Fi 4.65 over 41,277. Activity features side by side with other brands: best dog activity trackers.

Fit, weight and cats

Tractive clips onto the collar you have; Fi replaces it with its own band. The DOG 6 is 2.8 x 1.1 x 0.7 in, weighs 1.4 oz, fits collars up to 1.1 in wide, and is for dogs above 8.8 lb (the size selector says "above 9 lbs"); IP68. The Series 3+ tracker is about 3.2 x 1.2 x 0.45 in (81.5 x 30 x 11.5 mm) and 1.66 oz (47 g) in Fi's comparison chart, on bands from XS (9.5–11 in, under 10 lb) to XL (20–31 in, 95 lb and up); "Swap your collar for free when your puppy is full grown," says Fi. Fi rates it IP68 and IP66K but disagrees with itself on depth: about 5 ft (1.5 m) for 30 minutes in the help center (edited 10/12/2026), "up to 50 meters deep" on the collar page (10/14/2026). For a dog under 8.8 lb, the DOG 6 is out by Tractive's own spec, while Fi's XS band says "under 10 lb" with no minimum; see best GPS trackers for small dogs.

Cats are a different pair: the Tractive CAT 6 Mini ($79, 1.1 oz including its collar, "up to 7 days" with a Power Saving Zone, about $187 in year one) against the Fi Mini ($99 plus $9 shipping, 0.56 oz (16 g) without a strap, "up to 2 months," about $297), and Fi says the Mini tracks no steps or activity for cats. Four cat trackers compared: best cat GPS trackers.

What owners complain about

Both samples are brand-level, not model-specific, and both put GPS and the app on top. Tractive: 113 reviews (100 App Store reviews from 08/02 to 10/07/2026, 13 Trustpilot seller reviews from all countries) through 10/09/2026. GPS accuracy 21, app connectivity 19, customer support 12; battery, subscription price, and fit 7 each. "I still to this day cannot reach a live person to troubleshoot issues with the products" (App Store, 08/25/2026).

Fi: the 50 most recent App Store reviews of the shared Fi app (08/18 to 10/07/2026). App connectivity 13, GPS accuracy 8, subscription price and cancellation 5, battery 4; outside those themes, 21 of 50 object that the app must have "Always" location permission to open. "the company makes it nearly impossible to cancel or change the service" (App Store, 10/05/2026). Fi's Amazon listing, marked currently unavailable, shows 3.8 of 5 over 983 ratings; we read none of those individually.

Safety and recalls

No recall for either brand: the saferproducts.gov recall API and cpsc.gov searches for Tractive, Fi, Barking Labs, "GPS tracker," "pet tracker," and "dog collar" returned nothing related as of 10/14/2026. Tractive's vitals features carry the line "Tractive is not a medical device," and Fi's warranty excludes damage "caused by accident, abuse, misuse (e.g., having been chewed)."
