The short answer

We track 3 self-cleaning litter boxes. Prices run $599 to $799, checked 10/14/2026.

Two accessories are the real running cost of a Litter-Robot: waste drawer liners and carbon filters, and at Whisker's own replacement intervals they come to about $125 a year on the Litter-Robot 4, $110 on the Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro, and $119 on the EVO (litter-robot.com prices, 10/09/2026, unchanged on 10/14/2026). Liners fit every model and any 10–13 gallon trash bag substitutes; the carbon filter for the 4, 5, and EVO does not fit the Litter-Robot 3, which has its own. Everything else in the catalog, from the $15 OdorTrap 3-pack to the $599 Credenza, is optional, and most of it fits only one generation.

Liners and bags

A liner costs $1 at the 25-pack price and 70 cents at the 50-pack, replaced each time the drawer is emptied, and Whisker's one-cat interval differs by model: "once per week" for the 4 and 3 (manuals p. 36), "once every 10 days" for the 5 (manual p. 17), "every 8 days" for the EVO (use-and-care). Two cats roughly double it. The manuals also say "any 10–13 gal (37–49 L)" trash bag works and "white bags work best."

Carbon filters and OdorTrap

The filter is the one consumable Whisker says you can skip: each current manual says "The Carbon Filter is not required for the unit to function" and that one "should last approximately 1 month." The Litter-Robot 3 manual (p. 28) says "a few months" where its product page says monthly. OdorTrap packs are an add-on, not in the box; the OdorTrap page says "every 2 weeks," the 5 and EVO manuals (p. 36, p. 31) "every 2-4 weeks."

OdorTrap Podmodels not named on page$201 pod + 1 pack + magnetpack every 2 weeks$0 plus packs

The holder is where Whisker contradicts itself: its page says "Compatible with Litter-Robot 4, 5 & 5 Pro" and "Not compatible with Litter-Robot 3 or EVO," while the EVO manual (p. 31) says "Our OdorTrap Holder snaps right into the Litter-Robot EVO filter cover." Whisker's OdorTrap installation guide sides with the page: "We do not recommend using the OdorTrap Holder with Litter-Robot EVO"; on the EVO the packs go "on top of the globe" (all three read 10/14/2026). The OdorTrap Pod page names no models, only that the pod "fits on Litter-Robot, standard litter boxes, and more" (10/14/2026).

Fences, shields, ramps and mats

Fences and ramps are generation-specific, and the only cross-generation path is a $10 Ramp Adapter that puts a Litter-Robot 3 ramp on a Litter-Robot 4. A fence ships with every unit, the 5's is "preinstalled," and we found no standalone fence for the 5 or EVO on litter-robot.com (10/14/2026); the Bezel Guard page says "Each Litter-Robot 5 comes with a preinstalled fence." None of these are consumables, so cost per year is $0 after purchase.

The Shield carries a trade-off in Whisker's own text: "Designed specifically for cats who love to kick and dig," it narrows the opening to 7.25 in wide by 9 in high and cannot be used with the LR4 Fence; a Litter-Robot 5 version is "Coming soon." The Ramp takes the Litter-Robot 4 footprint from 22 in by 27 in to 22 in by 38 in (product page).

Cabinets and credenzas

Both furniture pieces fit "any Litter-Robot model," but only the Credenza takes a ramp, and only the LR4 Ramp; opened furniture is final sale per the returns page, and neither page prints interior dimensions, only exterior ones: Credenza 51.34" W x 27" D x 36.18" H, Cabinet 35.43" W x 27" D x 36.18" H (litter-robot.com, 10/14/2026).

The LitterHopper is the other large add-on, $129 for the Litter-Robot 4 version ("Holds up to 13 cups of litter"; weight-based cat ID stops working for cats over 25 lb with it installed, per Whisker) and $129 for the Litter-Robot 5 version ("approximately 17.3 cups," firmware 5.9.6 and app 1.38 or later); there is none for the EVO. Kits: Litter-Robot 4 Accessory Kit $213 (regular $263; hopper, Shield, 25 liners, 6 filters), Litter-Robot 5 LitterHopper Kit $199 (regular $234), Litter-Robot 3 Accessory Kit $112 (ramp, fence, 2 filters, 25 liners; "Not compatible with Litter-Robot 4"), Litter-Robot 3 Refresher Kit $67 (a 20 lb bag of litter, 25 liners, 2 carbon filters), and the Litter-Robot Kickstart Kit $80 (regular $115; a bag of litter, 25 liners, 6 carbon filters, a 3-pack of OdorTrap, cleaner wipes; "Compatible with Litter-Robot 4, Litter-Robot 5, Litter-Robot EVO"), the Refresher and Kickstart kits per litter-robot.com on 10/14/2026.

Replacement parts (bonnet, globe, seal strips, motor, PSU)

Whisker prices nine Litter-Robot 4 parts, and five of them are free once under warranty: the support article lists a one-time replacement of six parts, "the globe liner, seal strips, motor, laser board, bonnet, or power supply," ordered in the app under My Robots; the laser board has no price page. We found no priced parts pages for the 5 or EVO; Whisker's parts page lists only Litter-Robot 3 and 4 parts (litter-robot.com, 10/14/2026).

Outside the tables: Cleaner Spray ($24) and Wipes ($10) are optional, with the use-and-care articles asking for a basic globe clean every 1–3 months and a deep clean at least every 3 months; Lit Premium litter is $30 for 20 lb, and the manuals accept any clumping clay litter.

What it adds to the first-year cost

Liners and filters add $110–$125 to the sticker price; the optional items decide whether the first year lands near $700 or past $1,000. At list price with free shipping (excluding AK, HI, and PR) and before sales tax, which varies by state:

  • Litter-Robot 4: $699 + $52 liners + $73 filters = about $824.
  • Litter-Robot 5: $799 + $37 + $73 = about $909; the 5 Pro at $899 comes to about $1,009.
  • Litter-Robot EVO: $599 + $46 + $73 = about $718.

OdorTrap at the 3-pack price adds $65–$130, Whisker+ $79.90/year, a LitterHopper $129, a Credenza $599. Robot prices are litter-robot.com's on 10/14/2026, unchanged from 10/09/2026.

Compatibility between generations

Only liners, OdorTrap packs, the LitterTrap Mat (how it compares with third-party mats by price per square foot: best cat litter mats), and the two furniture pieces cross generations. The carbon filter splits the line, one for the 4, 5, 5 Pro, and EVO and another for the 3. Fences, ramps, bezels, hoppers, and every replacement part are generation-specific; the Litter-Robot 3 Accessory Kit is printed "Not compatible with Litter-Robot 4"; within the 4, the Shield excludes the Fence and the Camera Mount Kit ($35 special, regular $49); the PetTag ($29) works only with the 5 Pro. The open conflict is the OdorTrap Holder, "Not compatible with Litter-Robot 3 or EVO" on its page and "snaps right into the Litter-Robot EVO filter cover" in the EVO manual (p. 31); the EVO path both sources allow is packs loose in the drawer. FAQ

Do you need special bags for a Litter-Robot?

No. The manuals for the 4, 5, and EVO say any 10–13 gallon (37–49 L) trash bag works and that "white bags work best." Whisker's own liners are $1 each in the 25-pack and 70 cents in the 50-pack (10/14/2026).

Does the Litter-Robot 4 carbon filter fit the Litter-Robot 3?

No. The filter page says "Not compatible with Litter-Robot 3/Connect"; the 3 uses its own filter at the same $12 for two. Both manuals say the filter is not required for the unit to run.

How often do you replace the Litter-Robot carbon filter?

About monthly per the Litter-Robot 4, 5, and EVO manuals ("approximately 1 month"), which is $73 a year at $6 a filter; the 5 shows "Replace filter soon" on its LCD. The Litter-Robot 3 manual says "a few months."

What type of litter is best for a Litter-Robot?

Clumping clay. The manuals say "We recommend a high-quality, clay-based clumping litter" and rule out strictly absorbent, non-clumping, newspaper, pine, and wood-pellet litters.

Where is the fill line on the Litter-Robot 4?

Inside the globe at the MAX line, about 4 L by volume (manual p. 12); the 5 takes about 1 gallon and the EVO about 3 L. The Litter-Robot 4 manual (p. 15) says to top up weekly.

How we picked

What we checked: 41 items on litter-robot.com/accessories.html, whisker.com/robot-accessories, and whisker.com/cat-litter-box-furniture, priced on 10/09/2026; intervals from the Litter-Robot 4 manual (updated 03/14/2024), the Litter-Robot 5 manual (LR5-8099), the EVO manual, and the Litter-Robot 3 manual (Rev 13); compatibility as printed on each product page; the Litter-Robot 4 replacement-parts support article; Whisker's returns page. We count regular prices, since the "Special Price" on consumables is a 30% first-Autoship discount, and vendor pages print no SKUs. Cost per year is our arithmetic from the one-cat interval and the smallest pack. Method: how we research.
