Litter-Robot Review: EVO, 4, 5, and 5 Pro Compared by First-Year Cost, Warranty, and Owner Complaints
4 self-cleaning litter boxes, 1 no longer sold, $599 to $799. Cat count and cat weight decide between the three current Litter-Robots more than features do. For one or two cats, the Litter-Robot EVO has the lowest first-year cost in the line by our count: $599 at litter-robot.com on 10/14/2026 plus about $119 of liners and carbon filters at Whisker's intervals, about $718 before sales tax. Three or more cats, or a cat over 19 lb, means the Litter-Robot 4 ($699, about $824 first year) or the Litter-Robot 5 ($799, about $909, rated for 3–30 lb and five cats). The caveats: our owner sample is small (43 reviews read for the 4, 8 each for the 5 and EVO), support contacts and sensor errors lead the Litter-Robot 4 complaints we read, and the seller's Trustpilot score is 3.3 of 5 over 609 reviews (10/09/2026).

The lineup
Four models carry the name, and Whisker no longer sells one of them. Prices are what litter-robot.com printed on 10/09/2026 and again on 10/14/2026; shipping is free except to AK, HI, and PR.

Warranty and returns
The three-year WhiskerCare extension costs a different amount per model, $129 for the Litter-Robot 4, $149 for the 5 and 5 Pro, and $99 for the EVO (product pages, 10/09/2026), and it must be bought "any time within first year." The legal page says the plan covers "Accidental damage, material/workmanship defects, power surges" and "mechanical and electrical breakdowns," with "never deductibles or hidden fees." It "Does not apply to robots sold by anyone other than Whisker or Whisker-approved distributors"; a Trustpilot review from 09/25/2026 describes a Costco unit that "comes with a year warranty" and could not be extended. Coverage can be denied for damage "caused by a non-Whisker part, improper installation, or third-party service." A support article lists a free one-time replacement under warranty of "the globe liner, seal strips, motor, laser board, bonnet, or power supply." For the Litter-Robot 3, "Whisker no longer offers an extended warranty."
Returns from Whisker's own store get a "90-day in-home trial" (returns page, 10/09/2026), but you pay return shipping or accept a $60 prepaid label deducted from the refund, an RMA is required, and a unit sent back with litter in it "may be subject to a $75 cleaning fee." The page gives two refund timelines, "within 7-10 business days" and "within 10 to 30 days of receipt."
Whisker+ and what works without it
No Litter-Robot needs a subscription to clean itself. Whisker+ is optional at $7.99/month after a 30-day trial or $79.90/year (litter-robot.com/whisker-plus, 10/14/2026), and the same page says "SmartScale identification and weight tracking stay free on the EVO, 4, 5, and 5 Pro." The paid tier adds daily summaries, per-cat habit tracking, and two years of history; on the 5 Pro the free tier gives "real-time video streaming (5 minutes daily)" and two days of cloud clips, while "Enhanced features, such as AI facial recognition, require Whisker+."
The app is not required either: Whisker's FAQ says "The Whisker app is not required for Litter-Robot to function—Litter-Robot will still work as a self-cleaning litter box even without WiFi," and the Litter-Robot 4 manual (p. 26) shows the Wi-Fi switch. The FAQ answer names no model (litter-robot.com/faq.html, 10/14/2026); the Wi-Fi switch is documented only in the 4's manual. Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only except on the 5 Pro (manual p. 44). The App Store listing's "Data Linked to You" names contact info, identifiers, photos or videos, and usage data; rating 4.8 of 5 over about 148,000 ratings as of 10/09/2026. On Google Play (10/14/2026) the app is rated 4.7 over about 60,000 reviews; its Data safety section says "No data shared with third parties" and lists Personal info, Photos and videos, and App activity as data the app may collect.
Consumables for a year
Liners and carbon filters add about $110–$125 a year per model at Whisker's intervals, and only the liners are strictly necessary. Liners are $25 for 25 (10 for $12, 50 for $35) and fit every model; the manuals say any 10–13 gallon (37–49 L) trash bag works. Filters for the 4, 5, and EVO are $12 for two or $30 for six; the manuals say "one filter should last approximately 1 month" and that it "is not required for the unit to function." The Litter-Robot 3 takes a different filter at the same price. Prices are from litter-robot.com on 10/09/2026, unchanged on 10/14/2026; the "Special Price" shown there is a 30% first-Autoship discount we don't count.
- Litter-Robot 4: a liner every 7 days (manual p. 36), about 52 liners, $52, plus 12 filters at $6, $73: about $125.
- Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro: a liner every 10 days (manual p. 17), $37, plus $73: about $110.
- Litter-Robot EVO: a liner every 8 days (use-and-care), $46, plus $73: about $119.
With list price and free shipping, the first year before sales tax is about $824 for the 4, $909 for the 5, $1,009 for the 5 Pro, and $718 for the EVO; Whisker's FAQ has no sales-tax entry, and we did not reach checkout. OdorTrap packs are optional, $15 for three every "2 weeks" (page) or "2-4 weeks" (5 and EVO manuals), so $65–$130 a year. The full catalog is on the Litter-Robot accessories page.
Recalls
The CPSC recall database returned no recalls for "Whisker," "Litter-Robot," or "litter box" through the saferproducts.gov recall API on 10/14/2026, and a cpsc.gov/Recalls search for the same terms on 10/09/2026 returned zero related results. The 4 and 5 manuals (p. 39, p. 48) list the units as "Class 1 Laser Product" under IEC 60825-1:2014.
Claimed vs independent
Whisker prints no decibel figure for any model, only "QuietSift technology that minimizes noise," and the one meter reading with stated conditions is three years old: Bryan Vu at yourbestdigs.com (updated 07/11/2023), "digital sound level meter" "about 20″ away," one cat, "lighter-weight wheat litter," 38 dBA ambient. The 37 dB figure for the Litter-Robot 4 on cats.com (updated 10/03/2025) names no meter or distance.
| Quantity | Whisker says | Independent | Who, when, conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cycle noise, Litter-Robot 4 | No dB printed | 40–55 dBA average, about 59 dBA peak | yourbestdigs.com, 07/11/2023, meter at about 20 in, 1 cat, wheat litter |
| Cycle noise, Litter-Robot 3 Connect | No dB printed | 60–62 dBA average, about 65 dBA peak | Same test, same date |
| Cycle noise, Litter-Robot 5 and EVO | No dB printed | Not independently measured | Searched through 10/09/2026 |
| Drawer interval, Litter-Robot 4, 1 cat | 8 days (page); "once per week" (manual p. 36) | "about once every 7-10 days" | yourbestdigs.com, 07/11/2023, 1 cat, wheat litter |
| Drawer interval, Litter-Robot 5, 1 cat | 10 days (page, manual p. 17); "once per week" (manual p. 43 FAQ) | "every seven to ten days" | 9to5toys.com, 04/14/2026, conditions not stated |
| Drawer interval, EVO, 1 cat | 7 days (page); 8 days (use-and-care); "once per week" (manual p. 17) | Not independently measured | vetstreet.com, 01/16/2026, repeats the weekly guideline |
Whisker also disagrees with itself: the Litter-Robot 5 minimum is 3 lb on the page and 2 lb in the manual (p. 3, p. 33, p. 42); the Litter-Robot 4 maximum is 25 lb on the page while the support FAQ says "No, Litter-Robot 4 does not have a weight limit"; the 5 is 29.9 in tall on the page and 29.50 in in the manual (p. 8); the EVO page names "weight sensors" where its manual FAQ (p. 38) adds optical and obstruction sensors.
Two 2026 reviews report sensor faults on the newest models: Christian de Looper at bgr.com (02/08/2026) logged "extended scale activity" errors on a 5 Pro with no cat present and resets "at least once a week during testing," conditions not stated; Nicole Etolen at technomeow.com (updated 02/25/2026) saw "a ton of position fault errors" on an early EVO with three cats over about two months, fixed by firmware.
What owners say
Not enough owner reviews read yet for any model: 43 for the Litter-Robot 4 (two TheCatSite threads of 18 and 17 posts, 3 App Store reviews, 5 on Trustpilot), 8 each for the 5 and EVO, and 22 for the 3 Connect, through 10/09/2026. Reddit, Chewy, and Amazon were not reachable to our tools on 10/09/2026 or 10/14/2026, and Whisker does not sell on Amazon officially. We don't count ratings on the brand's site (4.5 over 14,096 reviews for the 4).
In the Litter-Robot 4 sample, the repeating themes are support contacts (4), sensor errors (3), app or Wi-Fi drops (2), and a cat refusing the box (2). A TheCatSite owner wrote on 09/09/2026 that "It does have problems with now and then randomly going offline" and that "Benji unfortunately won't use it"; an App Store review from 05/14/2023 says "the robot works well but the app keeps disconnecting and asking to re-register the device." The praise is about warranty service: "Customer service under extended warranty has been amazing." (Trustpilot, 09/20/2026). The one Litter-Robot 5 complaint read in full (Trustpilot, 10/02/2026) is a unit that failed within a month and needed "a replacement power supply."
Where to buy and seller reputation
Whisker's store is the only seller with the three-year WhiskerCare, and it is the seller the complaint platforms describe: Trustpilot 3.3 of 5 over 609 reviews (45% one-star) and a BBB profile rated A+ with 89 complaints in three years, as of 10/09/2026. Retail on the same date: PetSmart lists the 5 at $799, the 5 Pro at $899.99, and the EVO at $599.99; Target lists a Litter-Robot 4 Core Bundle at $799.99, not the bare unit. Costco lists a Litter-Robot 4 LitterHopper Bundle (item 1986374) at $799.99 (costco.com, 10/14/2026); its EVO bundle page did not show us a price.
Buy if / Skip if
Buy if: you have one to four cats between 3 and 25 lb and want the deepest parts catalog in the line, including a $129 LitterHopper, a $79 Shield, and nine priced replacement parts as of 10/09/2026. Skip if: you have five cats or a cat over 25 lb (the 5's printed range), or one cat in a small room, where the EVO is $100 less at list. See EVO vs Litter-Robot 4.
Buy if: you have three to five cats or a cat up to 30 lb and want the 10-day one-cat interval and an on-unit LCD; the Pro only pays off if you will buy Whisker+ for facial-recognition cat ID. Skip if: you want a track record. The model launched 10/21/2025, the two detailed reviews (bgr.com, 02/08/2026; cats.com, 03/15/2026) split on reliability, and our owner sample is eight reviews.
Buy if: you have one or two cats between 3 and 19 lb and want the lowest first-year cost in the line, about $718, with the cheapest extension ($99). Skip if: you may add a third cat, want a LitterHopper, or want the OdorTrap Holder, which the holder's page says does not fit the EVO although the EVO manual (p. 31) says it does.
Best for: nobody buying new; Whisker stopped selling it and offers no extension. Skip if: your cat is under 5 lb, the manual's minimum for its weight switch. Closest match we link to: the Litter-Robot EVO, which Whisker's own page names as the replacement.
Questions people ask
Which Litter-Robot is best?
The Litter-Robot 4 for multi-cat homes and the EVO for one or two cats, by first-year cost and printed range: $699 for 3–25 lb and four cats against $599 for 3–19 lb and two cats (litter-robot.com, 10/14/2026). Other brands are ranked on best automatic litter boxes.
Is a Litter-Robot worth it?
Only if about $718 to $1,009 before tax, our count of list price plus a year of liners and filters, fits your budget for a drawer you empty every 7–10 days with one cat.
What are the downsides of the Litter-Robot?
Sensor errors and app disconnects repeat in the 43 Litter-Robot 4 owner posts we read, and two 2026 reviews reported scale and position faults on the 5 Pro and early EVO. Add 2.4 GHz-only Wi-Fi on all but the 5 Pro and a $60 return label.
Does the Litter-Robot work without Wi-Fi?
Yes for the Litter-Robot 4: Whisker's FAQ says it "will still work as a self-cleaning litter box even without WiFi." Whisker has not printed the same for the 5 or EVO. Without the app you lose notifications, per-cat weights, and remote cycling.
How much does a Costco Litter-Robot cost?
Costco lists a Litter-Robot 4 LitterHopper Bundle (item 1986374) at $799.99 (costco.com, 10/14/2026). Its EVO bundle page did not show us a price, so we don't print one for the EVO. A Trustpilot reviewer wrote on 09/25/2026 that a Costco unit's one-year coverage could not be extended.
Is the Litter-Robot made by iRobot?
No. iRobot sells robot vacuums and mops and lists no litter box on its US site (irobot.com, 10/09/2026); the Litter-Robot is made by Whisker, a separate company. The name mix-up is common enough that we cover it on its own page: Does iRobot make a litter box?
