Cat gear: self-cleaning litter boxes, feeders, fountains, cameras, GPS and DNA tests

We track 70 cat devices and kits in 4 groups: self-cleaning litter boxes (28, $99.95 to $799.99), automatic cat feeders (16, $29.99 to $299), cat water fountains (19, $27.99 to $139.99) and cat GPS trackers (7, $34.95 to $99).

Every price, plan and spec on these pages comes from a vendor page, manual or app listing with the date we read it, and the first-year cost adds the liners, filters, crystal-litter trays and plans the vendor itself lists. Questions

Is Litter-Robot worth it?

Litter-Robot 4 lists at $699 on litter-robot.com (10/14/2026) with free shipping to the contiguous US, a 90-day return window and a 1-year warranty; no subscription is required, and the Whisker+ app plan is optional at $7.99 a month. With Whisker's own liner and carbon-filter intervals the first year comes to about $824, against a median of $603 for the rotating-globe boxes we track. Whether that premium buys you anything is what the Litter-Robot 4 review and Best automatic litter boxes answer model by model.

How does a self-cleaning litter box work?

Three mechanisms. Rotating globes (16 of the 28 boxes we track) turn the drum so clumps fall through a screen into a drawer; rake trays (6) drag a comb through the litter into a covered bin; open-top sifters (6) tilt or lift a grid. Each manual specifies the litter it needs (clumping or crystal) and the delay before a cycle starts after the cat leaves. Cycle timing, litter type and waste-drawer intervals per model are in Best automatic litter boxes.

What are cat water fountains made of, and how often do the filters change?

Of the 19 cat fountains we track, 4 have a stainless steel bowl (Petlibro Stainless, PetSafe Drinkwell 360 Stainless, Pioneer Pet Raindrop Stainless, Veken) and 2 are ceramic (PetSafe Drinkwell Pagoda, Pioneer Pet Raindrop Ceramic). Most of the rest are plastic: 6 with a stainless steel top or tray, 2 with a steel top as an option and 3 all plastic. Cat Mate does not list the material, and the AquaPurr is a faucet attachment with no reservoir or filter. Vendor pages list filter changes every 14 days (Petlibro, PetSafe Drinkwell, Veken), every 21–30 days (Catit, Cat Mate) and every 28 days (PETKIT, Pioneer Pet). The filter cost at the vendor's own interval is part of the first-year cost in Best cat water fountains.

Do automatic cat feeders need a subscription?

None of the 16 feeders we track requires one: 14 list no plan and 2 list an optional one. Ten need the app for scheduling; the other six (Cat Mate C200 and C500, PetSafe Simply Feed, SureFeed Microchip Feeder and Microchip Feeder Connect, Whisker Feeder-Robot) can run from the device. Portion sizes, hopper volumes and app requirements are compared in Best automatic cat feeders.
