Which automatic cat feeder to buy
We track 16 automatic cat feeders. Our top pick is PETKIT Fresh Element Solo Automatic Feeder, scored 9.5/10. 14 of 16 with a listed plan status work with no subscription. Prices run $29.99 to $299, checked 10/14/2026.
The PETKIT Fresh Element Solo is the automatic cat feeder we'd point most one-cat homes to: among the feeders we can link to, it scored highest on our five-point check, and PETKIT lists it at $69.99 (petkit.com, 10/14/2026; Walmart had it at $54.99 on 10/09/2026) for a 3 L hopper, up to 10 meals a day, and servings PETKIT puts at "approximately 10g" (manual p.14). The catch is a 1-year warranty and only 10 owner reviews read. If you want no app at all, read the PetSafe Simply Feed entry; for the largest hopper and a 90-day trial, the Whisker Feeder-Robot.

PETKIT Fresh Element Solo (our top pick)
For one cat on kibble, with a stainless steel bowl and batteries that keep meals coming in a power cut. PETKIT's own product page lists it at $69.99 (petkit.com, 10/14/2026); Walmart had it at $54.99, sold by PETKIT, on 10/09/2026. The manual (V1.2) gives a 3 L hopper, up to 10 meals, servings of "approximately 10g," pieces under 0.47 in (12 mm), and five AAA batteries as backup. If the router drops, "the feeder will continue to operate as normal, but the App will not be able to track your feeder's status" (p.14). What held it back: schedules live in the app, the warranty is 1 year while the YumShare line gets 2, and of the 10 owner reviews we read, one says "Portions are not coming out in correct quantities" (Walmart, 01/04/2026). First year: $69.99 plus desiccant packs, which PETKIT's product page neither prices nor schedules (petkit.com, 10/14/2026), before shipping. PETKIT's warranty terms and app are covered in our PETKIT review.
PetSafe Healthy Pet Simply Feed
For no app and no Wi-Fi. $95.99 at petsafe.com with free shipping over $49 (10/09/2026): about $96 in the first year before tax, plus four D batteries with an "Estimated battery life" of 1 year; the wall adapter is sold separately. Everything is programmed on the unit: up to 12 meals a day in 15-minute steps, 1/8 cup to 4 cups per meal, from a 24-cup hopper. What held it back: the product page says "dry and semi-moist kibble up to a 3/4 in diameter," while the manual says "For dry food use only" on p.2 and "dry or semi-moist" on p.9; a 1-year warranty; and the 5 reviews we could read on petsafe.com, one reporting PetSafe does "not sell spare parts" for the agitator (12/11/2025). Returns: 45 days, return shipping on you. PetSafe's other feeders and fountains are summarized in our PetSafe review.
PetSafe Smart Feed (2nd generation)
For the same 24-cup conveyor with app scheduling. $134.99 at petsafe.com and $120.99 on Amazon against a $149.99 list (10/09/2026); about $135 in the first year before tax, no subscription. Up to 12 meals of 1/8 cup to 4 cups, and a Slow Feed mode that dispenses larger meals "in small increments over 15 minutes." It needs a 2.4 GHz router, "not a 5 GHz network" per PetSafe support, and the guide has you finish app setup before adding food; a top button feeds without the app. What held it back: the My PetSafe app at 3.7 over 779 App Store ratings, a 1-year warranty, and five vendor-site reviews we could read, all 1 to 3 stars: "Post-blackout, this feeder entered a quiet error state where the app reported everything was fine" (petsafe.com, 05/28/2026).
PETKIT YumShare Solo 2
For a camera over the bowl. PETKIT's current camera feeder (model P572, manual dated 02/26/2026) has live view, two-way talk, a 3 L hopper, dual-band Wi-Fi, and a 2-year warranty for purchases on or after 01/01/2025. Without the optional Care+ plan, "Only pictures can be viewed" in the timeline (manual p.14); with the camera off, "feeding plan(s) still work" (p.21). What held it back: PETKIT lists it at $149.99 (petkit.com, 10/14/2026), but neither the product page nor PETKIT's subscription-policy page gives a Care+ price; we found no US retail listing and read zero owner reviews. First year: $149.99 before shipping, plus a Care+ plan PETKIT does not price on its site. PETKIT's Care+ terms are also in our PETKIT review.
Whisker Feeder-Robot
For the largest hopper among the feeders we link to and the longest trial. $299 at whisker.com, $339 with the optional backup battery, free shipping in the contiguous US (10/09/2026); about $299 in the first year before tax, since Whisker+ isn't offered for the feeder. Capacity: 25 cups in the manual (p.7), "up to 32 cups" on the product page with the Hopper Insert removed, which the manual allows only for small kibble. Portions come in 1/8-cup (30 mL) steps, up to 8 meals in the app; from the control panel the "Maximum daily feeding available is 4 cups per day" (p.16). Returns: a 90-day in-home trial, return shipping on you. What held it back: a 1/8-cup minimum one owner calls "a little problematic," a 1-year warranty ($49 extends it to 3 years), and owner reviews we could read only on Whisker's own store. Full detail in the Feeder-Robot review.
Feeders without a store link
We have no store link for these; each names the closest feeder we do link to.
PETLIBRO Granary Wi-Fi (5L)
$71.99 at PetSmart (regular $89.99) and on Amazon (list $99.99) on 10/09/2026; desiccant bags at $29.99 for 12, changed "every half a month" per the manual, add about $61 a year. 5 L hopper, 1/12 cup (20 ml) portions, dual-band Wi-Fi. What held it back: PETLIBRO's policy covers feeders for 24 months while the manual says "12-month warranty," and no owner review of this model loaded for us anywhere. Closest match with a store link: the PETKIT Fresh Element Solo.
PETLIBRO Granary Camera (5L)
$139.99 at Target, $111.99 on sale at PetSmart (10/09/2026), both with 3 months of cloud storage. 1080P camera with night vision, the same hopper and desiccant schedule. Cloud is optional: Standard $59.99/year, Plus $119.99/year (App Store, 10/09/2026). What held it back: 4.8 stars over 180 ratings at Target against 3.6 over 985 on Amazon, and 6 of the 30 reviews we read objecting to the subscription push, one calling it "very predatory sales tactics if you want to use local storage" (Amazon, 01/12/2026). Closest match with a store link: the PETKIT YumShare Solo 2, $149.99 at petkit.com (10/14/2026).
PETLIBRO Air
$59.99 at Target (regular $69.99), $55.99 at PetSmart (10/09/2026). Cordless, on a built-in battery PETLIBRO says lasts "up to 30 days"; 2 L hopper; a 1/24 cup minimum of "approximately 5g" per the vendor's Amazon FAQ; 2.4 GHz only. What held it back: 4 of the 33 owner reviews we read describe the battery dying or not holding a charge: "The biggest issue is when the built-in battery goes dead." (Amazon, 04/25/2026). Closest match with a store link: the PETKIT Fresh Element Solo.
WOPET Patrol Pro (F07 Pro)
$79.99 on sale at wopet.com against a $99.99 list (10/09/2026). 6 L hopper, 5 g per portion, up to 15 meals; the warranty goes from 1 to 2 years if you register within 30 days. What held it back: schedules exist only in the WOpet Life app (manual p.13), rated 2.7 over 193 on Google Play, where one owner writes "the app keeps losing the device and I have to re-pair often." (08/12/2026). Shipping is by weight: WOpet's shipping policy lists $9.99 for the first kilogram and $6.99 for each additional kilogram, with no free-shipping threshold (wopet.com, 10/14/2026). Closest match with a store link: the PETKIT Fresh Element Solo.
Catit PIXI Smart Feeder
$111.80 on Amazon against a $139.99 list, $179.99 at PetSmart (10/09/2026). 2.9 L reservoir, up to 12 meals, kibble up to 0.4 in (9 mm), 2-year warranty; desiccant pads every 30 days add about $28 a year. What held it back: no grams per portion from Catit and portion complaints across the 18 reviews we read: "Less than a year old and it's been severely over dispensing for no reason." (Amazon, 01/28/2025). Closest match with a store link: the PetSafe Simply Feed. Catit's fountains are covered in our Catit fountains review.
Microchip feeders
No microchip feeder in our database has a store link, so this group has no pick.
- SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder: $169.99 on Amazon (list $199.00); a lid that opens for up to 32 stored pets, no timer, no app, 3-year warranty; about $178 in the first year with C batteries. One owner: "twice now I have had the motors die (NOT dead/low batteries) after a year or two" (Amazon, 07/24/2026).
- PETLIBRO One RFID: $119.99 on sale at PetSmart (list $149.99); a 3 L dispenser that reads PETLIBRO's own collar tag, not implanted microchips, one tag per feeder.
- SureFeed Connect: $216.51 on Amazon; scales and app data need the $84.99 Sure Petcare Hub, wired to your router. About $225 in the first year without the Hub.
Wet food feeders
Every feeder we link to is dry-only by its manual, and none of the three wet food feeders has a store link. The PETLIBRO Polar ($112.16 on Amazon) is the only one with active cooling, which PETLIBRO says keeps "3 meals chill for up to 3 days"; the Cat Mate C500 ($47.99) and C200 ($29.99) sit on ice packs. Claims and owner reports are in our wet food feeder roundup.
How to choose
Start with the food. Whisker's manual says "Do not use canned, wet, or moist pet food," PetSafe's Smart Feed guide says "For dry food use only," and PETKIT names dry or freeze-dried pellets. Kibble limits run from 0.4 in (9 mm) on the Catit to 3/4 in on the Simply Feed.
Then meal size. The smallest steps are 5 g on the WOPET and the PETLIBRO Air and about 10 g on the PETKIT; PetSafe and Whisker start at 1/8 cup, which one Feeder-Robot owner said held their cats to 4 meals a day.
Then the app. The Simply Feed, SureFeed, and Cat Mate feeders need no phone, and the Feeder-Robot programs from its panel. PETKIT, Catit, and Whisker manuals say a saved schedule keeps running when Wi-Fi drops; PETLIBRO's Granary and WOPET manuals describe it only for battery mode. The Fresh Element Solo, Smart Feed, Feeder-Robot, Air, WOPET, and Catit join 2.4 GHz networks only.
Two cats on different diets need a lid that opens for one of them, such as the SureFeed microchip feeders above. For a dog, Whisker's manual gives "Two 1/2-cup meals per day per 15-pound dog" (automatic dog feeders).
What it really costs in the first year
Our first-year figure adds price, shipping as shown on 10/09/2026, any required subscription, and scheduled consumables; sales tax (varies by state) and food are left out. No feeder here needs a paid plan to feed. Five have complete figures: the Simply Feed (about $96), the Smart Feed (about $135), the SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder (about $178), the SureFeed Connect (about $225, plus $84.99 once for a Hub), and the Feeder-Robot (about $299). The rest were priced at retailers whose shipping depends on the order: Target ships free at $35 and charges $5.99 below it, PetSmart's free standard shipping over $49 is for signed-in Treats Rewards members, Amazon's free shipping needs a minimum of eligible items per order, and Walmart's help pages did not load for us (all checked 10/14/2026).
Consumables are mostly desiccant: PETLIBRO asks for a new bag every 15 days, about $61 a year; Catit a pad every 30 days, about $28. PETKIT's product page does not price its desiccant (10/14/2026); for the One RFID, Petlibro sells a 24-pack of desiccant bags at $59.99 as an add-on on the feeder's page (petlibro.com, 10/14/2026), which at the manual's 15-day interval comes to about $61 a year. Batteries: four C cells every 6 months in SureFeed, which Sure Petcare requires, are priced at about $8 a year and included in its first-year figures; four D cells a year in the Simply Feed and three AA in the Cat Mate C500 are not priced, so they stay out.
What owners complain about across the category
Not enough independent owner reviews for a category-wide index: of the 324 behind this page, only the Cat Mate C500 passed our 50-review threshold on retail sites. Its Owner Complaint Index: battery or power in 8% and noise in 5% of 65 reviews read on Walmart and Amazon. For the Feeder-Robot, not enough independent owner reviews read yet (0 on retail sites; 60 read on whisker.com, the vendor's own store). There, jams and sensor faults that stop dispensing came up most, then app and Wi-Fi trouble, then support; one owner wrote it "does not feed scheduled meals when it's offline" (07/26/2024), against the manual's statement (p.27) that it keeps the stored schedule.
Across all 324 reviews, the brands' own stores included, app and Wi-Fi trouble led with 49 mentions, then jams (31), battery or power (27), support (23), portion accuracy (22), a pet getting into the food (21), and noise (17).
Safety and recalls
The CPSC recall database returned no feeder recalls for any of the eight brands on 10/09/2026 (saferproducts.gov recall API and cpsc.gov/Recalls), and the recall API returned the same on 10/14/2026. The only brand hit was unrelated: power adapters sold with PetSafe heated sleepers, recall #10-283 (06/29/2010).
The makers print use limits. PetSafe's Smart Feed guide: "Do NOT use this pet feeder with puppies, kittens, dogs or cats not able to reach the food tray or with any physical disability." PETKIT's Fresh Element manual (p.4): "This device is not recommended for pets younger than 3 months." No independent safety test exists for any model in our files.
FAQ
Can I leave a cat alone for 3 days with an automatic feeder?
Ask your vet; a feeder covers meals only. On the hardware side, PetSafe, Whisker, PETKIT, and Catit say a stored schedule runs without Wi-Fi, and most take backup batteries; the Feeder-Robot's is a $40 option. For wet food, the PETLIBRO Polar caps one meal at 72 hours (manual p.16), see wet food feeders.
Do automatic cat feeders need Wi-Fi or an app?
No. The PetSafe Simply Feed, SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder, and both Cat Mate models have no app, and the Feeder-Robot programs from its control panel. PETKIT, PETLIBRO, WOPET, and Catit feeders need the app for schedules, and the Smart Feed guide makes app setup the first step.
Do automatic cat feeders work with wet food?
Only the ones built for it. All five feeders we link to are dry-food feeders by their manuals. In our database, wet food goes to the PETLIBRO Polar, which cools on mains power, and the Cat Mate C500 and C200, which use ice packs (wet food roundup).
What is the most reliable automatic cat feeder?
We can't say from owner reports yet: only the Cat Mate C500 passed 50 independent reviews read. On paper, the longest warranties are 3 years for SureFeed and Cat Mate (the C500 manual requires registration within 14 days) and 2 years for the PETKIT YumShare Solo 2 and Catit. PETLIBRO's manuals and policy disagree, 12 against 24 months.
How we picked
What we checked: 16 product pages and 15 manuals or quick-start guides on 10/09/2026; 324 owner reviews on Walmart, Amazon, Target, Google Play, an owner blog, and the brands' own stores (petsafe.com, litter-robot.com, wopet.com) through 10/09/2026; and the CPSC recall database for all eight brands on 10/09/2026, rechecked through the saferproducts.gov recall API on 10/14/2026. PETKIT's and Petlibro's own product pages were read on 10/14/2026. Chewy and Reddit did not load for us, so nothing from either is counted.
Each feeder gets a five-point check: vendor specs (hopper, meals a day, smallest portion), first-year cost, warranty and returns, owner reports, and whether an app or subscription is mandatory (how we research). Feeders we can link to come first; inside each group the order is the score, and ties go to the lower first-year cost. No independent measurement with a named author, of portion grams, decibels, or battery hours, exists for any of the 16 in our files.
