Whisker Feeder-Robot Review: First-Year Cost, Portions and Who It's For

The Whisker Feeder-Robot is a dry-food feeder we'd point you to if you already run a Litter-Robot on the Whisker app or want a large hopper with a 90-day return window: $299 at litter-robot.com on 10/09/2026, $339 with the backup battery, no subscription, free shipping to the contiguous US. It holds 25 cups with the insert and serves 1/8 to 1/2 cup per meal out of the box. The open question is reliability: Whisker's manual says it keeps feeding offline, and one owner wrote that it doesn't; no reviewer we found measured portions, noise, or battery life.
you feed dry kibble of 5/8 in or less, want 25 cups in the hopper, and value a 1-year warranty that covers accidental damage, plus a $49 option to stretch it to 3 years. It shares one app with the Litter-Robot (see our Litter-Robot brand review).
your pet needs portions smaller than 1/8 cup, you feed wet food, two pets eat from one bowl and you need to control who eats, or your router runs only on 5 GHz. A lower-priced alternative is in our automatic cat feeder guide.

Verdict
What we checked: the Feeder-Robot product page, the 36-page manual (version RF1-8004-0e), and Whisker's warranty, returns, financing, and Whisker+ pages on 10/09/2026; the 60 newest of 394 owner reviews on Whisker's own store (08/31/2023 to 07/18/2026); the Whisker app listings on the App Store and Google Play; five YouTube reviews; and the CPSC recall database on 10/09/2026. On 10/14/2026 we rechecked the price, shipping, and the saferproducts.gov recall API: no change. Amazon, Chewy, Walmart, and Reddit did not load for our tools, and we did not reach the checkout.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- No subscription: Whisker+ ($7.99/month or $79.90/year) is listed only for Litter-Robot models, and the Feeder-Robot page names no plan (10/09/2026)
- 25-cup hopper with the insert, 30–32 cups without it for small kibble (manual, p.7)
- WhiskerCare 1-year warranty includes accidental damage and power surges; 3 years total for $49
- 90-day in-home trial (manual, p.32)
Cons:
- Smallest portion is 1/8 cup; 5 of the 60 reviews we read on Whisker's own store call it too large
- Jams and dispensing faults in 12 of those 60 vendor-hosted reviews; app or Wi-Fi trouble in 7
- The backup battery is a $40 extra, rated for about 24 hours
- Return shipping is on you: $60 is deducted if you use Whisker's FedEx label
Claimed vs measured
Nothing on the Feeder-Robot has been measured by any reviewer we found, so every number below is Whisker's.
| Metric | Whisker claims | Independent result | Who, when, conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hopper | 25 cups with the Hopper Insert; 30–32 cups without it (manual, p.7); "up to 32 cups" (product page) | not measured | none found |
| Portion | 1/8 cup (30 mL) or 1/4 cup (60 mL) per dispense, by dispenser (manual, p.14) | not measured | none found |
| Backup battery | "approximately 24 hours of operation in power-saving mode" (manual, p.25) | not measured | none found |
| Noise | not listed (product page, manual) | not measured | none found |
| Offline feeding | keeps the saved schedule "whether the unit is connected to the network or offline" (manual, p.27) | one owner: "it does not feed scheduled meals when it's offline" | whisker.com review, 07/26/2024; no test conditions given |
We logged five video reviews: Petsacular (04/21/2025), World Animal Foundation (06/27/2024), Petopedia (09/27/2023), GetConnected Media (06/21/2022), and Cat Food Dispensers Reviews (11/15/2020). All carry affiliate or paid links, and none exposed a transcript or published numbers our tools could read (checked 10/09/2026 and 10/14/2026), so this page carries no independent portion, noise, or battery figures. The CNET review returned a 404.
Real price: list, street, tax, shipping and subscription
The Feeder-Robot shows "As low as $299" at litter-robot.com on 10/09/2026, with no sale and no struck-through price. That covers the four color combinations without a battery; the same four with the backup battery are $339, and the dedicated black and white pages show $339. The Warranty Bundle, the feeder plus 3-year WhiskerCare, is $349. A reconditioned unit was listed out of stock.
Shipping is free to the contiguous US, excluding Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Sales tax varies by state and is added at checkout, which we did not reach. There is no required plan. The page also says the feeder is HSA/FSA eligible with a Letter of Medical Necessity, but names two different providers for it, "Flex" and "Sika Health."

Category median first-year cost in our database: $135.
$299 before sales tax, from Whisker's own prices:
- Feeder-Robot: $299 (litter-robot.com, 10/09/2026)
- Shipping: $0 to the contiguous US
- Required subscription: $0
- Consumables: $0. Whisker names no filter or desiccant; the manual asks only for cleaning "at least once a month" (p.27)
Optional extras change the total: the backup battery adds $40, the 3-year WhiskerCare extension $49, the 1/4-cup dispenser for larger meals $10, and a glass bowl $30. A fully loaded first year, before tax, sits around $428. For comparison, the PetSafe Smart Feed lists at $134.99 on petsafe.com with a 24-cup hopper.
Where to buy: official vs Amazon vs Chewy
Prices checked 10/09/2026Prices as printed on the store page on the date shown, before sales tax; stock and bundles differ by store.
| Seller | Price (10/09/2026) | Warranty | Returns | Subscription required? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| litter-robot.com / whisker.com | $299; $339 with battery | WhiskerCare 1 year, starts the day the robot ships | 90 days, RMA required | No |
| PetSmart | $299 (item 5359321) | WhiskerCare needs manual activation | PetSmart's policy | No |
| Amazon | "New (2) from $299.00 & FREE Shipping" (other sellers box) | manual activation; extended plan only for Whisker-approved sellers | Amazon's policy | No |
| Chewy | not loaded (HTTP 429) | manual activation | Chewy's policy | No |
The difference is in the paperwork. Whisker's 90-day trial applies to its own orders; third-party purchases go back through that retailer, per the manual (p.32). Whisker says the extended plan "does not apply to robots sold by anyone other than Whisker or Whisker-approved distributors," and outside purchases need manual WhiskerCare activation before a claim. Chewy and Amazon both list the Feeder-Robot, but neither page opened for our tools on 10/09/2026 or 10/14/2026, so we have no confirmed third-party price or seller.
Financing
The Feeder-Robot page shows no monthly figure on 10/09/2026, only a site banner, "Buy now, pay over time." Whisker's financing page runs through Affirm: "Your rate will be 0%–36% APR based on credit," over 3, 6, 12, or 18 months, with 0% APR limited to products in the "pay-over-time category." Whisker's own example is "a $600 purchase might cost $54.21/mo over 12 months at 15% APR."
Warranty and returns
Every new unit comes with WhiskerCare for 1 year. Whisker says it covers "Accidental damage," "Power surges," "Mechanical and electrical breakdowns," "Natural disasters," and "Software support," with "no deductibles, surprise charges, or hidden fees" and free round-trip shipping on claims. The extension costs $49: "Extend your 1-year warranty for an additional 2 years (3 years total)," bought "anytime within the first year." Modifications may void coverage, and a unit returned dirty can carry a $75 cleaning fee.
Returns: the manual (p.32) offers a full refund within 90 days, and "you are responsible for return shipping costs." Whisker's FedEx label costs $60, deducted from the refund, and an RMA is required. The returns page gives two refund timelines: "within 7-10 business days" of receipt, and, in the FAQ on the same page, "within 10 to 30 days of receipt."
Parts, consumables and support in the US
Nothing on the Feeder-Robot wears out on a schedule Whisker publishes, and most parts are sold separately on litter-robot.com (10/09/2026): hopper from $40, Hopper Insert $20, lid from $15, 1/8-cup or 1/4-cup dispenser $10 each, power supply $17, stainless steel bowl $20, glass bowl $30. The Motor Assembly is $40; Whisker sells it for out-of-warranty units with "not dispensing meals or snacks," "Sensor Fault," or a flashing red "motor jammed" light.
Support per the manual (p.33): chat Monday to Friday 9AM–5PM EST and weekends 9:30AM–5PM EST, phone (877) 250-7729 on weekdays 9AM–5PM EST, and email around the clock. Whisker's support site lists longer hours: "Live support available Mon-Fri: 9AM-9PM EST and Sat-Sun: 9AM-5PM EST, or submit a ticket anytime," phone 1-877-250-7729 (litter-robot.com/support, 10/14/2026); the support site is the more recent source. Whisker is based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and the manual says the feeder is "Designed & Assembled in the USA."
Hopper, portions and jams
Portion size is the main limit. The pre-installed dispenser drops 1/8 cup (30 mL) at a time, 1/8 to 1/2 cup per meal; the optional 1/4-cup (60 mL) dispenser serves 1/4 to 1 cup per meal (manual, p.14). The product page says "1 to 8 times per day," but the manual splits that: from the Control Panel "the maximum number of meals dispensed per day is 4" (p.18) and the daily maximum is 4 cups; from the app, 8 cups (p.16). Gravity Mode tops off the bowl "every 6 hours."
Whisker's reference portions (p.17) are two 1/4-cup meals per day per cat and two 1/2-cup meals per day per 15-pound dog, and it says dogs of 30 pounds or more "may require 2-4 cups of food per day." For a dog in that range, the 1/4-cup dispenser and the app schedule are what make the numbers work; dog feeders with larger meals are in our automatic dog feeder guide.
Food: "any dry or semi-moist cat or dog food that is 5/8" or less in kibble size. Do not use canned, wet, or moist pet food" (p.7). The glossary on p.31 says the feeder is "compatible with all dry/semi-moist kibble sizes with the Hopper Insert installed," which does not match p.7. The product page sides with p.7: "any dry or semi-moist cat or dog food that is 5/8" or less in kibble size" (litter-robot.com, 10/14/2026). For wet food, see our wet food feeder guide.
Jams: the dispenser retracts and retries "up to 5 times"; if it still fails, the light flashes red and you clear the chute by hand (pp.29–30). The manual traces uneven portions to large, square, or odd-shaped kibble run without the Hopper Insert (p.28), and it notes a meal won't dispense until food already in the chute clears (p.29).
Power, backup and offline mode
The Feeder-Robot runs on an AC/DC power supply with a 6-foot "Nylon-braided, chew-resistant power cord" (manual, pp.7, 14) and is rated for indoor use only (p.14). The backup battery, a 12 VDC 1.3 Ah sealed lead-acid unit, is not included: $40 on its own or as the $339 bundle, and it needs a Phillips screwdriver to install. Whisker rates it at "approximately 24 hours of operation in power-saving mode," after which the unit switches back and recharges on its own when power returns (p.25).
Offline, the manual is explicit: "The Feeder-Robot saves the feeding schedule locally on the unit," and keeps feeding on it "whether the unit is connected to the network or offline" (p.27). One owner reported the opposite after an internet outage while traveling (whisker.com, 07/26/2024). It's a single report with no detail on power or settings, so treat it as a reason to run a trial meal with the router off during the 90-day window, not as proof.
App and privacy
The app is optional: the Control Panel sets portions and meals without it (manual, pp.17–18), though only up to 4 meals and 4 cups a day. Connecting needs a 2.4 GHz network on IPv4, and pairing needs Bluetooth on your phone (product page; manual, p.20). In the Whisker app you see food level, feeding history and trends, give a snack, and manage several robots in one place.
The Whisker app rates 4.8 on the App Store over 148K ratings and 4.7 on Google Play over 60K reviews as of 10/09/2026, but those ratings pool Litter-Robot owners and are not specific to the feeder. Apple's privacy card lists Contact Info and Identifiers under "Data Used to Track You," and Contact Info, User Content, Identifiers, and Usage Data as linked to you. Google Play's data safety section says "No data shared with third parties" and lists name, email address, user IDs, app interactions, and optional photos as collected.
Recalls and safety notices
We found no Feeder-Robot or Whisker recall in the CPSC database on 10/09/2026 or on 10/14/2026. The saferproducts.gov recall API returned 0 results for "Whisker," "Litter-Robot," and "pet feeder"; a search on "feeder" returned only unrelated recalls from 2002 and 2020.

Brand site (litter-robot.com) shows 4.3/5 from 394 reviews on its own page; brand-site reviews are not counted in the score.
- Low-food notifications and app scheduling (vendor reviews 09/27/2025, 03/26/2024)
- Cat could not break into the unit (3 of 60 vendor reviews)
- Takes large dental-diet kibble other feeders could not (vendor review 11/12/2023)

Reviews on the brand's own site and reviews written for a free product are not counted. Store ratings change over time; the date shows when we checked.
Not enough independent owner reviews read yet (0 on retail sites: Chewy and PetSmart blocked our tools on 10/09/2026 and 10/14/2026, and no Amazon or r/litterrobot reviews were read; 60 read on whisker.com, the vendor's own store), so we publish no Owner Complaint Index for this model. On Whisker's store the feeder rates 4.3 of 5 over 394 reviews (265 five-star, 35 one-star). We read the 60 newest, dated 08/31/2023 to 07/18/2026; Whisker hosts them and replies to some.
What owners complain about
In those 60 reviews: jams or dispensing faults 12, app or Wi-Fi 7, the 1/8-cup minimum 5, customer support 4, bowl shape 3, portion accuracy 2, power 2, noise 2. Two quotes show the pattern: "regular sensor failures, incorrect status errors, forgets to feed them regularly" (2/5, 05/14/2026) and "The newer models have a sensor that is overly sensitive and will throw a fault at least once a day" (3/5, 11/29/2025). Warranty stories cluster after year one: a motor that failed at 15 months without the 3-year plan (05/16/2024) and a replacement that failed again out of warranty, after which "the company offered me a 10% discount to buy a new unit" (09/05/2024).
What owners praise
Low-food alerts and app scheduling came up most: "my favorite part about the Feeder Robot is that I get a notification when it's low on food" (5/5, 09/27/2025). Three of the 60 say a cat could not break in, and one review from 11/12/2023 says it handles a large dental-diet kibble other feeders could not. Owners of both robots like keeping them in one app.
FAQ
Does the Feeder-Robot work for multiple cats?
Partly. It has one bowl and no pet recognition, so it can't stop one cat from eating another's meal. Whisker's guide is two 1/4-cup meals per cat per day (manual, p.17), and the app manages several robots, so one feeder per cat is the cleaner setup. For a lid that opens for one cat only, see the microchip feeders in our automatic cat feeder roundup.
Is the Feeder-Robot good for dogs?
For small and medium dogs on dry kibble of 5/8 in or less, the numbers fit. Whisker says a dog of 30 lb or more may need 2–4 cups a day (manual, p.17); with the optional $10 1/4-cup dispenser and the app, the Feeder-Robot serves up to 1 cup per meal and 8 cups per day. Larger meals per dispense are in our dog feeder guide.
Does the Feeder-Robot need a subscription?
No. Whisker+ at $7.99/month or $79.90/year lists only the Litter-Robot 4, 5, 5 Pro, and EVO as eligible devices on 10/09/2026, and the Feeder-Robot page mentions no plan. The app features, including alerts and history, carry no fee on the product page.
What happens in a power outage?
Without the optional $40 backup battery, the feeder stops until power returns. With it, Whisker rates about 24 hours of operation in power-saving mode, with a blinking yellow light on the power button, and the battery recharges once household power is back (manual, p.25).
How long does a full hopper last?
For an average cat eating 1/2 cup a day, Whisker says kibble "will typically need to be replaced once every 7-8 weeks," and for a small to medium dog "every 2-4 weeks" (manual, p.25). The app and a solid red light on the tower tell you when to refill. Other feeders are compared in our automatic cat feeder guide.
