For most mixed-breed dogs. Essential screens "430+ breeds", reports mix "down to 1%", and lists "25+" genetic health tests and "50+" traits. On 10/14/2026 it was $95.99 at wisdompanel.com ($119.99 list), $6 above the breed-only kit during the current sale. No subscription.

Wisdom Panel Complete for Cats (our top pick for cats)

For a cat owner who wants health screening and blood type along with breed. Complete for Cats screens "70+ breeds and populations", "45+ genetic health conditions", and "25+ physical traits", and identifies blood type, which Wisdom Panel says helps "so you're ready in case they ever need a blood transfusion". Sale price on 10/14/2026: $97.49 ($129.99 list), up from $90.99 on 10/09/2026. It was the only consumer cat kit on wisdompanel.com on 10/09/2026.

What held it back: breed results for a typical house cat. In the 20 Target reviews I read, 5 complained of a result that was mostly or entirely "American Domestic": "Not worth the money. Listed cat as 100 % American Domestic cat. Pretty generic." (09/25/2026). No relative finder for cats; Wisdom Panel offers a family tree instead.

Wisdom Panel Premium

For a dog owner who wants the most health tests from a company with a store link: "270+ tests for health conditions", 25+ behavior tests, and a "Genetic consult for 'at risk' health findings". $127.99 on sale on 10/14/2026 ($159.99 list). Wisdom Panel's own pages disagree on the count (the 2021 terms say "more than 200"), so treat 270+ as the vendor's current figure.

Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery

Breed ancestry plus one health test (MDR1) for $89.99 on sale ($99.99 list) on 10/14/2026. Same 430+ breed panel as Essential. During the current sale Essential costs $6 more and adds 24+ health tests, so Breed Discovery is the better buy only at list price.

Kits without a store link

No button for these kits: Orivet and DNA My Dog have no affiliate program we could confirm, and Embark and Basepaws list programs on their sites whose terms we have not confirmed (Embark's page checked 10/14/2026). Each comes with its closest match.

Embark (dogs)

Breed ID $109, Breed + Health $139, and Purebred $139 on sale on embarkvet.com on 10/14/2026 ($119, $159, $159 regular). Embark's product pages say it screens "400+ breeds, types, and varieties" and "270+ genetic health risks", with "Results in 2-4 weeks" and "99% breed accuracy" (read 10/14/2026), and list a relative finder; the raw-data download is described in Embark's help center, which did not open to our tools on 10/09 or 10/14/2026. Embark Breed ID has 4.6 stars from 19,829 Amazon ratings; its Trustpilot page is 1.5 stars from 168, with customer support the top complaint in the 80 I read (42). Closest match: Wisdom Panel Premium, $11 less than Embark Breed + Health on 10/14/2026.

Basepaws Breed + Health (cats)

$103.99 against $159.00 on Basepaws' product page on 10/14/2026, which also showed an extra "$84.99 In Cart" promo price beside them during a one-week sale (the homepage tile had the same $103.99 / $159.00 on 10/09/2026). US shipping is free both ways (product page, 10/14/2026). Basepaws, a Zoetis company, says the test covers 21 breeds and 64 genetic health markers and that it is "mainly geared towards mixed-breed, non-pedigree, domestic cats"; trait counts differ between its pages: "25 genetic traits" on the product page against "50 genetic trait markers" in its help center (both read 10/14/2026). It includes Basepaws' Oral Health report, which looks for microbes linked to three dental conditions. Basepaws says "This test does not provide a diagnosis." Results: "4-6 weeks", the longest claim in this list. Basepaws will replace a sample with too little DNA "free of charge", twice per pet, and takes unopened kits back within 120 days. Too few owner reviews were readable to say anything about complaints: 8 on Trustpilot, 7 of them about the dog test. Closest match: Wisdom Panel Complete for Cats.

Orivet and DNA My Dog (dogs)

Orivet Geno Pet was $94.99 on 10/14/2026, with free US shipping and a written promise of "Results within 28 business days of sample receipt or your money back". DNA My Dog Essential was $79.99 and claims "over 350 breeds with over 99% accuracy". In the reviews I read, Orivet's top complaints were support and waits, and DNA My Dog's was doubt about the breed result (34 of 48). Both are covered in the best dog DNA tests; closest match for both is Wisdom Panel Essential or Breed Discovery.

How to choose: dog or cat

Dogs have more choice: four companies, panels of 350+ to 430+ breeds, health screens from 1 to 270+ genetic tests. Decide whether you want breed only or breed plus health, then compare the number of health tests and the price on the day.

Cats have two serious options in the US, Wisdom Panel Complete for Cats and Basepaws Breed + Health, and smaller breed panels: 70+ breeds and populations at Wisdom Panel, 21 breeds at Basepaws. Most US cats are mixed-breed, and both vendors say their panels are built for that, so expect a large "domestic" share in the result. Buy a cat test for the health screen and traits rather than for a breed surprise.

What owners complain about

The same four complaints show up for every company I read: the wait, a lost or failed sample, a breed result the owner doubts, and slow support. At Embark (80 Trustpilot reviews) support led with 42 mentions; at Wisdom Panel (about 77 brand-level Trustpilot reviews, mostly UK buyers) waits led with 22; at DNA My Dog (48) breed doubt led with 34. Cat buyers add one of their own: a result that reads almost entirely "domestic". Trustpilot attracts unhappy buyers more than marketplaces do, so treat these counts as a pattern, not a failure rate.
