Which dog DNA test to buy

We track 8 dog DNA tests. Our top pick is Wisdom Panel™ Essential, scored 9/10. Prices run $79.99 to $139, checked 10/14/2026.

Wisdom Panel Essential is the dog DNA test I'd point most owners to: $95.99 on sale at wisdompanel.com on 10/14/2026 ($119.99 list) for a 430+ breed panel, 25+ genetic health tests, and 50+ traits, with results Wisdom Panel puts at 2–3 weeks after the lab gets the swab. Embark Breed ID scored highest on our five-point check, mostly on a large Amazon rating sample. Embark lists an affiliate program on its site ("up to 10% commission", 10/14/2026), but we have not confirmed its terms, so Embark appears below without a store link. No company in this list publishes an independent accuracy study for its own panel, so read every "99%" as a vendor claim.

Our top pick
Wisdom Panel Essential$95.99 on sale ($119.99 list) on 10/14/2026. Breeds, 25+ health tests, and traits for $6 more than the breed-only kit.
Most health tests
Wisdom Panel Premium$127.99 on sale ($159.99 list), 270+ health tests and a genetics consult for "at risk" findings.
Lowest price with a store link
Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery$89.99 on sale ($99.99 list), breed ancestry plus the MDR1 test.

Cat owners: Wisdom Panel Complete for Cats and Basepaws are compared alongside these dog kits in the best pet DNA tests.

Wisdom Panel Essential (our top pick)

For a mixed-breed dog whose owner wants breed ancestry and a health screen without paying for the top tier. Essential screens "430+ breeds", reports mix "down to 1%", and lists "25+" genetic health tests and "50+" traits. On 10/14/2026 it was $95.99 at wisdompanel.com, against $119.99 list, which put it $6 above Breed Discovery during the current sale. There is no subscription.

What held it back: Wisdom Panel publishes no accuracy percentage, offers no raw-data file (a printable Technical Report only), and has no written resample policy; owners on Trustpilot describe free replacement kits after a failed sample, but that is their account, not a promise. Shipping is "Flat rate shipping on all US orders" with no dollar amount printed on the product pages (checked 10/14/2026). Results: "2-3 weeks after our lab receives your pet's DNA sample". Full lineup in the Wisdom Panel review.

Wisdom Panel Premium (runner-up)

For an owner who wants the widest health screen in this list from a company with a store link. Premium keeps the same 430+ breed panel and adds up to "270+ tests for health conditions", "25+ behavior tests", and a "Genetic consult for 'at risk' health findings" with a veterinary genetics specialist. Sale price on 10/14/2026: $127.99 ($159.99 list).

What held it back: the count of health tests depends on which Wisdom Panel page you read. The product page says 270+, the terms effective 09/13/2021 say "more than 200", and Target's title says 265. The 60-day Product Promise covers the kit, "not laboratory results", so a result you dispute is not refundable. One Target reviewer of Premium wrote on 10/05/2026, "It took over a year to get the results!", the slowest report I found for any kit.

Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery

For breed ancestry only, at the lowest price with a store link: $89.99 on sale on 10/14/2026, $99.99 list. It shares the 430+ breed panel and relative finder with the higher kits but carries one health test, MDR1, which Wisdom Panel files under drug sensitivity, and three behavior tests.

What held it back: during this sale it is only $6 cheaper than Essential, which adds 24+ health tests and the trait report. At list price the gap is $20, and Breed Discovery makes more sense then. Owners mention an option to pay later for full results; Wisdom Panel's Breed Discovery page points to Premium ("Unlock 265+ additional health tests") without printing an upgrade price (10/14/2026).

These kits carry no button: Orivet and DNA My Dog have no affiliate program we could confirm on 10/09/2026, and Embark's program, listed on embarkvet.com on 10/14/2026, has terms we have not confirmed yet. The facts are the same quality as above; the closest match with a store link is named for each.

Embark Breed ID, Breed + Health, and Purebred

Embark's three dog kits were $109, $139, and $139 on sale on embarkvet.com's homepage grid on 10/14/2026 ($119, $159, and $159 regular). Embark's product pages say the kits screen "400+ breeds, types, and varieties" (its App Store listing says "over 350"), and Breed + Health adds "270+ genetic health risks" and "55 physical traits", with "Results in 2-4 weeks" and "99% breed accuracy" (read 10/14/2026; the homepage says "99% accuracy" for breed mix). The product pages also list a relative finder and "FREE U.S. shipping". Three further points, a raw-data download, a free replacement swab if a sample fails, and testing "run in a CLIA-accredited laboratory", sit in Embark's help center, which did not open to our tools on 10/09 or 10/14/2026; they are Embark's help-center text as indexed by search engines, not pages we read. Embark Breed ID has 4.6 stars from 19,829 ratings on Amazon (10/09/2026), the largest independent sample in this list, which is why it scored highest. The Purebred kit is for dogs of a single breed and, per Embark's product text, does not include a family tree.

Against that: Embark's Trustpilot page is 1.5 stars from 168 reviews, and in the 80 I read the top complaint was customer support (42), ahead of breed results that owners doubted (22) and waits past the promised time (20). Closest match with a store link: Wisdom Panel Premium, $127.99 on sale on 10/14/2026, $11 less than Embark Breed + Health that day.

Orivet Geno Pet Breed Identification

$94.99 at orivet.com on 10/09/2026 and 10/14/2026, printed with a "$" sign and no currency code, with free shipping listed for the US, and the only kit here that guarantees its time in writing: "Results within 28 business days of sample receipt or your money back". The product page disagrees with itself on breeds, "around 400" in one section and "350+" in its table; Amazon's title says 365+. Orivet's comparison table lists the same report rows for Geno Pet and the $158.95 Geno Pet+, including MDR1 and "Physical Trait Reports (50+)", and prints a test count, "265+ Tests", only for Geno Pet+; the base kit's own product description covers breed makeup only (orivet.com, 10/14/2026). Owners on Trustpilot (44 read, 1.7 stars from 46) mostly report support problems (28) and waits (27). Closest match with a store link: Wisdom Panel Essential.

DNA My Dog Essential Breed ID

$79.99 at dnamydog.com on 10/09/2026 and 10/14/2026, the lowest price in this list and $10 below Breed Discovery on 10/14/2026. DNA My Dog says it tests "over 350 breeds with over 99% accuracy" and promises results "in 2-3 weeks after we receive your sample". The Essential report lists "Associated health concerns" and an allergy sensitivity score, but those are not genetic health tests; DNA My Dog's health panel is a separate $98.99 kit. Amazon shows 3.7 stars from 8,937 ratings. Of 48 Trustpilot reviews I read, 34 doubted the breed result, the highest share in this list: "Results were ~20% of 5 different breeds." (05/01/2026). Closest match with a store link: Wisdom Panel Breed Discovery.

How to choose

Start with what you want to know.

  • Breed only. Any of the eight kits reports breed mix. The panels claim 350+ to 430+ breeds, and the counts come from vendors, not from an independent audit. For a mixed-breed rescue, a larger reference panel matters more than the headline accuracy number: DNA from a breed missing from the panel gets assigned to the closest breeds the panel has, as explained in how accurate dog DNA tests are.
  • Breed plus health. Compare the number of genetic health tests: 1 in Breed Discovery, 25+ in Wisdom Panel Essential, 270+ in Wisdom Panel Premium and Embark Breed + Health, and 265+ in Orivet Geno Pet+. More tests means more conditions screened, not a more accurate test.
  • A purebred dog. Embark sells a separate Purebred kit; the other three companies sell no purebred-only kit among the ones I compared.
  • Raw data. Only Embark says it offers a raw genotype file. Wisdom Panel offers a printable report.
  • Relatives. Embark and Wisdom Panel both run a relative finder. Orivet and DNA My Dog list none on the pages I read.

On accuracy, every company here describes its own test as accurate and none links to an independent check of its own panel. What the published studies do and don't show is in how accurate dog DNA tests are.

What it really costs

A DNA test is a one-time purchase in this list: none of the eight kits has a subscription, so the first-year cost is the kit plus shipping and sales tax, which varies by state.

The sale prices are promotions at Wisdom Panel and Embark and already moved once this month: on 10/09/2026 Wisdom Panel ran "up to $48 off during October's biggest sale" and the kits were $10 to $16 cheaper, and Embark's were $10 cheaper; on 10/14/2026 Wisdom Panel's banner read "Save up to 25% and help a pet in need." Return shipping of the swab is prepaid at Wisdom Panel, Embark, and Orivet. Upgrade costs matter too: Embark's help center notes that adding health to a Breed ID kit later costs more than buying Breed + Health at the start (search snippet; price not shown).

What owners complain about across the category

Across the reviews I read, the same four complaints repeat for every company: the wait, a lost or failed sample, a breed result the owner doesn't believe, and support that is hard to reach. The mix differs:

  • Embark (80 Trustpilot reviews, 4 App Store): customer support 42, breed result doubt 22, waits 20, sample failures 14. Owner Complaint Index on 84 reviews: support 50%, breed doubt 26%, waits 24%. Trustpilot is seller-level, covering all Embark products.
  • Wisdom Panel (about 77 Trustpilot reviews, mostly UK buyers): waits 22, lost or failed samples 17, breed doubt 14, support 12.
  • Orivet (44 Trustpilot): support 28, waits 27, sample failures 14.
  • DNA My Dog (48 Trustpilot): breed doubt 34, support 16, waits 10.

Trustpilot draws unhappy buyers more than marketplaces do: Embark is 1.5 stars there and 4.6 on Amazon for the Breed ID kit. Read the counts as a pattern of what goes wrong, not as a failure rate. Reddit, Chewy, and Amazon review text did not open to our tools on 10/09/2026, so the Owner Complaint Index is not published for the other three companies (fewer than 50 reviews read per kit).

Regulators and recalls

No federal agency reviews dog DNA tests before sale, and a swab kit is not a CPSC product category, so I mark the regulator field "n/a" for all eight. Embark's help center says its tests run in a CLIA-accredited lab; Wisdom Panel, Orivet, and DNA My Dog do not publish lab accreditation on the pages I read. Wisdom Panel's terms say its products "are not intended to diagnose diseases or predict behavior in any particular Pet", and Embark's help says genetic health results "are not a diagnosis but can inform you of potential risks".

FAQ

What is the most accurate dog DNA test?

None of the eight companies here publishes an independent accuracy study for its own panel. Embark claims "99% accuracy" for breed mix and DNA My Dog "over 99%", while Wisdom Panel prints no percentage and calls its test the "Most accurate breed detection test". These are vendor claims. What studies show is in how accurate dog DNA tests are.

How long do dog DNA test results take?

Two to four weeks after the lab receives the swab, by the vendors' own numbers: Wisdom Panel 2–3 weeks, Embark 2–4 weeks from the swab scan, DNA My Dog 2–3 weeks, and Orivet within 28 business days. Owners report anything from 1.5 weeks to over two months, usually because a sample was lost or failed.

Is Embark or Wisdom Panel better?

They are close on panel size and health tests: 400+ breeds and 270+ health risks at Embark, 430+ breeds and 270+ tests in Wisdom Panel Premium. Embark's help center describes raw data and a free replacement swab; Wisdom Panel was cheaper on 10/14/2026, $127.99 against $139 for the health kits.

Do dog DNA tests check for health problems?

Some do. Breed-only kits check one marker or none; health kits screen 25 to 270+ genetic variants. A positive result is a risk flag, not a diagnosis. Wisdom Panel's terms say its products "are not intended to diagnose diseases", so take any "at risk" result to your vet.

How much does a dog DNA test cost?

On 10/14/2026 the eight kits here ran $79.99 to $139 at the vendors' sites, before shipping and sales tax, with list prices up to $159.99. None has a subscription.

How we picked

I compared eight dog DNA kits from four companies on the same fields on 10/09/2026 and re-checked every kit's price on its vendor's site on 10/14/2026: list and sale price, breeds in the panel, number of genetic health tests, traits, results time claimed, raw-data download, relative finder, resample and return terms. I opened each vendor's product page and FAQ, Target's listings for Wisdom Panel, Amazon listings where they loaded, and read 80 Trustpilot reviews for Embark, 44 for Orivet, 48 for DNA My Dog, and about 77 for Wisdom Panel plus 80 Target reviews of Wisdom Panel kits. Embark's product pages, Chewy, and Reddit did not open to our tools that day; where an Embark number comes from search-indexed vendor text, I say so. How the five-point check works is on how we research.

Health results in every kit here are screening, not a diagnosis. Each vendor says so in its own terms, and a result that matters is one to take to your vet.
