Which cat water fountain to buy

We track 19 cat water fountains. Our top pick is PETKIT EVERSWEET MAX 2, scored 9.25/10. 17 of 19 with a listed plan status work with no subscription. Prices run $27.99 to $139.99, checked 10/14/2026. 4 models have no listed price.

The PETKIT Eversweet Max 2 is the cat water fountain we'd point most homes to: it ranked first on our five-point check among fountains we can link to, holds 101 oz (3 L), and runs cordless on a battery PETKIT rates at "service life up to 83 days." PETKIT lists it at $99.99 (petkit.com, 10/14/2026; $93.99 at Amazon from PETKIT-US on 10/09/2026); filters add about $58 a year. The catch: a 1-year warranty and no owner review text we could read. For the lowest first-year cost among the fountains we link to, about $86, see the PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum.

PETKIT Eversweet Max 2 (our top pick)

For a cordless fountain away from an outlet, with an optional Bluetooth app that tracks filter life. $93.99 at Amazon from PETKIT-US, no list price shown (10/09/2026); PETKIT's own store lists the UVC version at $99.99 (petkit.com, 10/14/2026). 101 oz (3 L), a wireless pump, a 5,000 mAh battery PETKIT rates at "up to 83 days," and a pump PETKIT lists at 25 dB, not independently measured. PETKIT says "Except for the battery pack, all other parts are dishwasher safe." What held it back: a 1-year warranty, since the Max 2 is not on PETKIT's 2-year list; 4.0 stars over 162 Amazon ratings, with Amazon's summary citing owners who say it "eventually stops working"; and a filter listing that names the Eversweet Max, not the Max 2. Filters: a $19.99 five-pack "every 2-4 weeks" plus foam pre-filters. First year: $99.99 at petkit.com plus about $58 in filters at the 4-week end, before shipping and sales tax, which varies by state. See our PETKIT review.

PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum (lowest first-year cost)

For the most water per dollar and the longest owner record here. $55.99 at petsafe.com, free shipping over $49 (10/09/2026); 168 oz, the most on this page; 2.5 watts. The guide (p.9) says "Replace the carbon filter every two to four weeks"; the $13.99 12-pack makes that about $30 a year at two weeks. First year: about $86 before sales tax, which varies by state. What held it back: leaks in 9 of the 66 owner reviews we read, "this leaks all over, emptying the reservoir all over my floor" (Walmart, 04/03/2026), and cleaning that leans on a dishwasher: "if you do not have a dishwasher it is a nightmare to clean" (petsafe.com, 04/30/2026). PetSafe lists the parts as "Top-rack dishwasher safe" but the pump as hand-wash. Footprint 15.8 x 10.3 x 10.0 in, indoor use only. Warranty 1 year, returns 45 days.

PetSafe Drinkwell Butterfly

For one cat and the smallest budget. $27.99 at petsafe.com (10/09/2026), where orders of $49 or less ship "for a nominal fee" PetSafe does not publish. 50 oz, 2.5 watts. The guide (p.8) says "Replace the carbon filter every 2-4 weeks and replace the foam filter every 1-2 months": about $73 a year at the short end, more than the fountain. What held it back: noise in 3 of the 8 owner reviews we read on petsafe.com, "It is so noisy, no matter how much water you put in it." (01/11/2026); no view of the water level; and a topper with no spare listed: "the cats have broken the butterfly and I can't find a replacement." (11/08/2023). First year: $27.99 plus about $73 in filters, before shipping and sales tax, which varies by state.

PetSafe Drinkwell Stainless Multi-Pet

Formerly the Drinkwell 360 Stainless Steel. For several cats at one bowl: 128 oz, a stainless bowl and cone, five spout rings. $75.99 at petsafe.com, free shipping (10/09/2026). PetSafe disagrees with itself on filters: the manual (p.3) says "The filter should be replaced every two weeks," the 12-pack page "Replace filter every 2 to 4 weeks." At two weeks plus monthly foam, about $75 a year ($37.54 at the long end); first year about $151 before sales tax, which varies by state. The manual (p.5) adds that filter "use is not required for normal operation." What held it back: an outdated manual edition, 8 owner reviews read, and splashing: "It splashes all over my floor and it's impossible to change the filters." (petsafe.com, 12/13/2025). One household reports "5 cats and 1 dog" on it (petsafe.com, 05/08/2026). Warranty 1 year, returns 45 days. PetSafe's whole lineup is summarized in our PetSafe review.

PetSafe Drinkwell Pagoda

For the ceramic fountain we link to. $90.99 at petsafe.com in White or Himalayan Blue, free shipping (10/09/2026); 70 oz, 3 watts. The manual says carbon filters "should be changed every two to four weeks" and foam "every 4 to 8 weeks," about $76 a year; first year about $167 before sales tax, which varies by state, the highest of the five we link to. PetSafe splits on cleaning: the product page says "Top-rack dishwasher safe," the manual "strongly" recommends hand washing ceramic. What held it back: 6 owner reviews read, one describing slime "you can't scrub off" and a motor that broke within 2 months (petsafe.com, 02/18/2025), and one owner reporting a cat that swallowed the rubber grommet during cleaning (petsafe.com, 06/21/2026). Against that: "We have been using this fountain for at least 15 years." (petsafe.com, 02/17/2025). Warranty 1 year.

We have no store link for these; each names the closest fountain we link to at a similar price, or says there is none.

Veken C1 Stainless, 108 oz

The most steel capacity per dollar: $27.99 sale, $29.99 list at Amazon (10/09/2026), 108 oz (3.2 L) of 304 stainless, a claimed 25 dB pump, and "replace the filter and pre-filter sponge every 2 weeks," about $53 a year. First year: about $81 before sales tax, assuming free delivery, which Amazon showed only on orders over $35. Warranty "2 Years" in Amazon's product information, no Veken terms behind it. What held it back: no manual, no review text read, and Amazon's summary that "others mention the pump stops working after two months." Closest match with a store link: none in stainless at this price; the Drinkwell Stainless Multi-Pet is $75.99.

Petlibro Dockstream 2

App hydration tracking by weight and a "pump-free design." $79.99 at Amazon for the plug-in (also $79.99 at petlibro.com on 10/14/2026); the cordless was $71.99 sale, $89.99 regular at PetSmart (10/09/2026). 101 oz (3 L); filters every 2 weeks, about $60 a year; warranty 24 months. What held it back: 3.4 stars over 459 Amazon ratings for the cordless, and PetSmart calling the tray "dishwasher-safe" while its warnings say "Not dishwasher safe." First year: $79.99 plus about $60, before shipping. Closest match with a store link: the Drinkwell Platinum. See our Dockstream review.

Petlibro Dockstream Cordless

$61.99 sale, $69.99 list at Amazon (10/09/2026); 84 oz (2.5 L), 5,000 mAh, a wireless pump, and a sensor mode with a "42-second flow." Filters about $60 a year. What held it back: 3.7 stars over 3,595 ratings, with battery life mixed and durability negative in Amazon's summary. Closest match with a store link: no cordless fountain at this price; the Eversweet Max 2 is $99.99 at petkit.com (10/14/2026).

Pioneer Pet Raindrop #6022 (ceramic) and #6023 (stainless)

$54.99 and $59.99 at Mud Bay (10/09/2026); Pioneer Pet does not sell either directly. 60 oz each; filters "approximately every two to four weeks," $10.99 for three, about $48 a year at four weeks and $95.51 at two. What held them back: pumps. "Five months in and the motor conked out." (Amazon, 08/28/2021, #6022); Amazon counts 583 negative of 610 pump-durability mentions on the #6023. Closest match with a store link: none at these prices; the Pagoda ($90.99) and Stainless Multi-Pet ($75.99) are the nearest.

Catit Flower Fountain

$32.99 at PetSmart (10/09/2026), 100 oz (3 L), warranty 2 years. Catit's sources disagree three ways: the filter page says "Replace every 30 days," the manual (p.8) "every 3-4 weeks," and the parts page of the same manual "Replace monthly." At 30 days and $12.99 for two, about $79 a year. No owner text was readable. Closest match with a store link: the Drinkwell Butterfly at $27.99 (more in our Catit fountains review).

Catit PIXI Smart and PIXI

The PIXI Smart is $139.99 at That Pet Place: 67.5 oz (2 L), 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, a UV-C emitter that "is not available as a spare part," and a Catit app at 2.1 stars over 94 iOS ratings. The plain PIXI is $48.99 at PetSmart, with a capacity Catit lists as both 2.5 L and 2 L on the same product page (catit.com, 10/14/2026). Both take the $8.99 three-pack, about $36 a year. Closest match with a store link: the Eversweet Max 2 for the Smart, the Drinkwell Platinum for the PIXI.

Cat Mate Pet Fountain (70 oz)

$27.99 sale, $42.99 regular at PetSmart (10/09/2026). Filters $6.99 for two, replaced "each month" in the words of Closer Pets, the Cat Mate maker, on its filter page (closerpets.co.uk, 10/14/2026), "monthly" at PetSmart: about $43 a year. PetSmart lists 3 years on the fountain, 1 on the pump. Closest match with a store link: the Drinkwell Butterfly.

  • Petlibro Dockstream (PLWF105), Capsule, and Stainless Steel 2L: no current US offer on 10/09/2026.
  • Catit Stainless Steel #50023 (Fresh & Clear): missing from catit.com's fountain catalog on 10/09/2026 but with a product page there on 10/14/2026, and no US store price found; its manual says filters "every 3 weeks," about $113 a year.

How to choose

Pick the material for the cleaning you'll do. Veken says "all water-contact parts are top-rack dishwasher safe"; PetSafe says top rack but the pump by hand; Catit's PIXI Smart manual allows only the top and cover, since "the fountain body is not"; the Flower manual makes no dishwasher statement.

Match capacity to refills: 50 oz (Butterfly) to 168 oz (Platinum). Then decide on the cord: most plug in and draw 2 to 3 watts by PetSafe's manuals; the Max 2 and Dockstream Cordless run on batteries.

Count pump cleaning, since warranties hang on it. PetSafe's pump pages say every 2 weeks, and the Stainless Multi-Pet manual says "Warranty may be voided if the pump is not cleaned regularly"; Pioneer Pet's warranty "will be voided" without its pump care; Veken says weekly.

What it really costs in the first year

Filters are the running cost, and on four of the 14 fountains with a price they cost more per year than the fountain. Our first-year figure adds price, shipping where the store shows it, and a year of filters at the maker's shorter interval unless noted; sales tax varies by state and is left out.

With shipping known, the first year comes to about $81 for the Veken, $86 for the Platinum, $151 for the Stainless Multi-Pet, and $167 for the Pagoda; the rest are price plus filters, before shipping. Two cautions: PetSafe's Platinum and Butterfly guides (p.3) say "If unauthorized filters are used, the warranty may be voided," and PETKIT's Filter Unit RECT page names only the "EVERSWEET MAX (CORDLESS)" as its scope, while the Max 2 product page sells that same filter as its add-on (petkit.com, 10/14/2026). PetSafe's filter auto-ship takes 5% off.

What owners complain about across the category

Only the Drinkwell Platinum passes our 50-review line. Owner Complaint Index: 60 reviews read on Walmart (which carries PetSafe's syndicated reviews; the 6 on petsafe.com repeat them), posted 2020 through 2026: leaks 9 (15%), pump failure 4 (7%), cleaning and mold 4 (7%), pump noise 3. Most repeated praise: the reservoir size and long life, as in "Sturdy fountain and pump is still working after 10 years." (Walmart, 01/25/2023).

For the others, not enough owner reviews read yet (30 read on petsafe.com, Walmart, and Amazon across the Butterfly, Stainless Multi-Pet, Pagoda, and Pioneer #6022). Noise leads there (3 of 8 Butterfly reviews, 4 of 8 Pioneer), then failed pumps and slime. Where only Amazon's summaries loaded, pumps lead again, on the Pioneer #6023 and the Veken.

Safety and recalls

The CPSC recall database returned zero fountain recalls for PetSafe, PETKIT, Petlibro, Catit, Veken, Pioneer Pet, and Cat Mate on 10/09/2026, and the same through the saferproducts.gov recall API on 10/14/2026. The only brand hits were unrelated: PetSafe heated-bed adapters from 2010 (#10283) and aquarium power heads from Catit's US distributor in 1989 (89-078). Incident reports on saferproducts.gov were not searched.

The makers print limits: PetSafe's Platinum and Butterfly guides say "Do not use outdoors. Do not run dry. For indoor household use only."; Catit warns that the PIXI Smart's "steel edges may be sharp."

FAQ

How often should you change the filter in a cat fountain?

Every 2 to 4 weeks on most fountains here, though the makers' own sources disagree. Catit's filter page says 30 days, its Flower manual "every 3-4 weeks," and its #50023 manual "every 3 weeks"; PetSafe's Stainless Multi-Pet manual says two weeks, its filter page 2 to 4. Veken and Petlibro's Dockstream listings say every 2 weeks.

Is ceramic or stainless better for a cat water fountain?

Neither, on the evidence we have: no maker or independent tester in our files compares them on hygiene. The differences we can show are weight and cleaning. Pioneer Pet lists its ceramic Raindrop at 4.25 lb and the stainless one at 1.7 lb, and the Pagoda manual recommends hand washing ceramic.

Are there cat water fountains that don't need a filter?

Yes, by two PetSafe manuals: for the Stainless Multi-Pet and the Pagoda, filter "use is not required for normal operation." The AquaPurr 5P, fed from a faucet with no pump or filter, is a different device and is not ranked here. The other makers tie their water claims to filter changes.

Can cats and dogs share a water fountain?

Yes, if the maker sells it for both. PetSafe lists the Platinum, Stainless Multi-Pet, and Pagoda for cats and dogs, and one Stainless Multi-Pet owner reports "5 cats and 1 dog" using it (petsafe.com, 05/08/2026). The Butterfly is tagged for cats; for larger dogs, see our dog water fountain roundup.

How we picked

What we checked: product pages for 18 cat fountains and the manuals for 10 of them on 10/09/2026; 96 owner reviews read in full on Walmart, petsafe.com, and Amazon, plus Amazon's review summaries where text would not load; warranty and return terms; and the CPSC recall database for every brand on 10/09/2026, rechecked through the saferproducts.gov recall API on 10/14/2026. Chewy and Reddit were not readable that day.

We compared every fountain on the same fields: capacity, material, filter interval in the maker's words, filter cost per year, warranty, and owner reports (how we research). Fountains we can link to come first; inside each group the order is our five-point check, ties going to the lower first-year cost. PetSafe's Drinkwell Outdoor Dog Fountain is tagged for dogs only, so it sits on our dog water fountain page.
