Tractive Review: DOG 6, DOG 6 XL and Cat Trackers, Plan Prices, Battery Claims and Owner Complaints
4 GPS trackers, $47.40 to $79. Tractive is one of the two cheapest ways into LTE GPS tracking in our database: the DOG 6 was $47.40 on sale against $79 list at tractive.com on 10/09/2026, and with the $108-a-year Basic plan the first year is about $155 before sales tax; only FitBark GPS comes in lower (about $131 on its 1-year plan). Tractive rates the DOG 6 at up to 14 days of battery, and Treeline Review got 25 days in daily use. The catches are no month-to-month plan in the US and GPS accuracy, app connection, and support at the top of owner complaints; we don't link to Tractive's store, and the closest trackers we link to are the Fi Series 3+ and Fi Mini.

Lineup
Tractive sells four trackers on its US storefront as of 10/09/2026, all with free shipping and all needing a plan. The DOG 6 XL and CAT 6 Mini launched on 04/08/2026 (Tractive press release); the CAT Mini is the previous cat model, still sold beside its replacement.
| Model | For | Battery, days (claimed, with / without Power Saving Zones) | Subscription/yr | Weight | tractive.com, 10/09/2026 (sale / list) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tractive DOG 6 | Dogs above 8.8 lb, clip-on | 14 / 6 | $108 (Basic 1-Year) | 1.4 oz | $47.40 / $79 |
| Tractive DOG 6 XL | Dogs above 44.1 lb, clip-on | 42 / 20 | $108 (Basic 1-Year) | 2.5 oz | $53.40 / $89 |
| Tractive CAT 6 Mini | Cats, tracker built into a safety-release collar | 7 / 4 | $108 (Basic 1-Year) | 1.1 oz | $79 (no sale shown) |
| Tractive CAT Mini | Cats above 6.6 lb, on a Rogz safety collar | 5 / 2 | $108 (Basic 1-Year) | 1.5 oz with collar | $49 (no sale shown) |
All four are listed as IP68 waterproof. The weight limits shift across Tractive's own pages: the DOG 6 selector says "above 9 lbs" while the specs say 8.8 lb, and the CAT 6 Mini appears as 7 to 18 lb, 6.6 to 17.6 lb, and "between 3 and 17.6 lbs" depending on the page. A DOG 6 XL Adventure in orange lists at $119, "Only for dogs above 55 lbs." Both cat trackers against Fi Mini and Pawfit Lite: best cat GPS trackers.
Best for / Skip if
Best for: a dog over 9 lb, when you want the lowest first-year cost for live LTE tracking and don't need a containment fence. Skip if: you want to pay month to month, or you need a phone line for support (owners report none, below).
Best for: dogs over 44 lb where battery matters more than size; it's Tractive's longest-rated tracker at 42 days with Power Saving Zones. Skip if: you need that figure confirmed. Tractive's own pages give 6 weeks, 4 weeks, and 1 month, and nobody has published a measurement.
Best for: an outdoor cat that will wear a collar, with the CAT Mini at $49 the cheaper way in. Skip if: your cat is small for its collar, or you don't want to charge every few days.
For dogs, the Fi Series 3+: $129 at Fi plus the $189/year default membership, about $318 for the first year with free shipping (Fi billing and shipping pages, 10/09/2026). Fi lists "Up to 3 months" of battery at low activity and "Up to 2 weeks" at high activity, and it weighs 1.66 oz. For cats and small dogs, the Fi Mini: $99 plus $9 shipping plus the same $189/year, about $297, at 0.56 oz, with "up to 2 months" of battery per Fi's help center (its launch post said 3 weeks). Both cost more in year one (the Series 3+ about twice the DOG 6), Fi has no month-to-month plan either, and its plans carry a 6-month minimum. Fi's store catalog (api.tryfi.com, 10/14/2026) shows lower first-term prices for new buyers, $59 / $99 / $189 for the 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year plans against renewal prices of $99 / $189 / $339, plus a $20 activation fee on prepaid plans, but we could not confirm them at checkout, so our first-year totals use the renewal prices from Fi's billing article (edited 09/15/2026). Side by side: Tractive vs Fi.
Claimed vs measured
Only the DOG 6 has an independent battery and accuracy reading with conditions.
| What | Tractive says | Independent or owner | Who, when, conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOG 6 battery | "Up to 14 days" with Power Saving Zones, "Up to 6 days" without | 25 days ("lasted 25 days during testing with daily use") · "Battery lasts only 4 days on low power mode." | Treeline Review, Jae Thomas, 07/11/2026: two off-leash dogs, walks of about 2 to 5 mi a day, collars off at home, default mode, Power Saving Zone use not stated · App Store owner, 08/12/2026 |
| DOG 6 XL battery | 42 days / 20 days (compare table); "up to 6 weeks"; another FAQ copy: "up to 6 weeks and 4 weeks respectively" (XL / XL Adventure); App Store text: "up to 1 month for XL trackers" | not independently measured | — |
| CAT 6 Mini battery | "up to 7 days with a Power Saving Zone and up to 4 days without"; App Store text: "Up to 5 days for cat trackers" | "the batter needs charged every 4-5 days even when she is only in the house on power save WiFi." | App Store cat owner, 08/15/2026, model likely CAT 6 Mini, not confirmed |
| GPS accuracy | no ft or m figure on US pages | "within a few yards each time"; service available about 85% of the time | Treeline Review, 07/11/2026: Boulder parks, foothill trails, backcountry; gaps under dense tree cover |
The App Store's 5 days matches the older CAT Mini's rating, so that text may predate the CAT 6 Mini; the site gives the CAT 6 Mini 7.
Subscription plans and what stops without one
A plan is required, and each plan covers one tracker. Tractive's plans FAQ: "Tractive Smart Trackers have built-in SIM cards (like your phone) that use mobile networks to send you location updates. All the fees needed to do that are covered with your subscription," and "Do I need a plan for each of my trackers? Yes." Tractive's plans FAQ adds: "Without a subscription, your tracker can't communicate its location to you" (edited 03/24/2026).
Prices on tractive.com/en-us/c/plans on 10/09/2026, "*Pricing may vary depending on location":
| Plan | Per month (as shown) | Billed | With Tractive Care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic 1-Year | $9/month | $108 annually | $132 annually |
| Basic 2-Year | $6/month | $144 every 2 years | $180 every 2 years |
| Premium 1-Year | $10/month | $120 annually | $144 annually |
| Premium 2-Year | $7/month | $168 every 2 years | $204 every 2 years |
| Premium 5-Year | $5/month | $300 every 5 years | $360 every 5 years |
There is no month-to-month option on the US page; Tractive's FAQ says a monthly plan is "available only for Basic plans in selected countries." The "subscription from $5 / month" on the product page is the 5-year Premium plan, paid $300 up front. Basic gives live tracking at "every 2-3 sec," regular updates "every 2-60 min," and "24-hour Location History"; Premium adds Family Sharing, Worldwide Coverage, 365-day history, and GPS data export. Tractive Care is the loss, damage, and theft replacement add-on: $24 a year on a 1-year plan, with "one claim per subscription period with a 1-year plan, and two claims with 2 and 5-year plans." All plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.
First-year cost
DOG 6: $47.40 sale price, free shipping, and $108 for Basic 1-Year makes $155.40, plus sales tax, which varies by state. The DOG 6 XL comes to $161.40, the CAT Mini $157, and the CAT 6 Mini $187. Premium adds $12 a year to each and Tractive Care $24. Nothing goes in for consumables: we found none listed on Tractive's product, plan, or battery pages (10/09/2026); the battery is built in and charges by cable. Tractive's site banner read "Get 40% Off Smart Dog Trackers" on 10/09/2026; at list price the DOG 6's first year is $187.
Where to buy
Tractive's US storefront is the only seller we could confirm: prices in USD, "Works in US," and "Free shipping in 3-5 business days" (10/09/2026). Chewy returned an error, Amazon returned an error, Walmart showed a bot check, and Best Buy had no listing, so we have no retail prices; Chewy and Amazon returned the same errors on 10/14/2026. Tractive's product page shows no financing.
Warranty and returns
Tractive's warranty policy (help center, edited 06/23/2026, read 10/14/2026): "Your Tractive GPS tracker is covered for two years from your purchase date." Covered: "Manufacturing defects" and "Material or functionality issues." Not covered: "Lost or stolen trackers," "Physical damage (bite marks, drops, water damage after opening device)," and damage from accidents or misuse. The page returned 403 to direct requests on 10/09/2026.
Returns are 30 days: "Not happy with your purchase? You can return your tracker within 30 days and get your money back" (product page, 10/09/2026). For loss or damage outside a warranty, Tractive sells Tractive Care, priced above.
Battery and GPS accuracy
Battery depends on Power Saving Zones and on live tracking. Tractive's battery page: "Frequent LIVE Tracking, especially with very fast update rates, will drain the battery more quickly," and you can set up to five Power Saving Zones. Charging is USB-C on the DOG 6 ("under 2 hours") and DOG 6 XL ("up to 3 hours"), magnetic on the CAT 6 Mini ("up to 2 hours").
The dog trackers list LTE (Cat1bis), Bluetooth 5.0, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, with GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo, and Tractive says they connect "to AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile LTE across the United States." The plans footnote describes the network differently, as "2G and/or LTE (CatM1)" coverage in over 175 countries. The CAT Mini lists LTE CatM1 and 2G. Coverage not measured — check the carrier map for your address. Radar Mode, in Tractive's words, lets you "Use Bluetooth to locate your pet indoors." One App Store owner (08/19/2026) put the limit bluntly: "It is not a true GPS because you need to be able to access cell towers."
App and privacy
Tractive GPS for Dogs and Cats is rated 4.7 of 5 over 45,681 ratings on the US App Store (10/09/2026), requires iOS 17.0 or later, and sells no plans in-app; you buy them on the web. The developer-provided privacy card lists as linked to you: precise location, email and name, photos or videos, user and device IDs, product interaction, and crash data.
The DOG 6 and CAT 6 Mini add what Tractive calls "Heart & Respiratory Rate Monitoring," measured "while they're sleeping or resting," plus "Sleep Monitoring," "Bark Monitoring," "Health Alerts," and a "Weekly Report... with an AI-powered summary." Tractive's own footnote: "Tractive is not a medical device... not intended to diagnose health conditions." The app shows these numbers; what they mean for your pet is a question for your vet.
Recalls and safety notices
No CPSC recall lists Tractive. On 10/14/2026 I searched the saferproducts.gov recall database for "Tractive," "GPS tracker," "pet tracker," and "dog collar": 0 results ("pet fence" also returned 0 on 10/09/2026).
What owners say
Owner Complaint Index: a brand-level sample of 113 reviews (100 on the App Store, 13 on Trustpilot) through 10/09/2026. The App Store reviews cover the app for every Tractive tracker and rarely name a model, so the counts describe the brand. The 100 App Store reviews (08/02/2026 to 10/07/2026) split 41 five-star and 31 one-star. Trustpilot rates the seller at 4.7 of 5 over 60,742 reviews from all countries, not the US devices alone.
Topics that came up most in the 100 App Store reviews, counting every mention:
- GPS accuracy: 21. "GPS accuracy too low to be useful" (09/29/2026).
- App connection: 19. "I get several false notifications every day." (09/17/2026)
- Customer support: 12. "I still to this day cannot reach a live person to troubleshoot issues with the products." (08/25/2026)
Battery, plan price, and fit each came up 7 times. The repeated praise is recovery: "Tractive guided me right to her 3 blocks away behind a house." (09/12/2026), and from a self-described "avid subscription hater": "I will never stop paying for this one." (09/07/2026)
Tractive and Whistle
Tractive bought Whistle from Mars Petcare (Business Wire, 07/28/2025) and shut the Whistle platform down on 08/31/2025; Whistle trackers no longer work. Tractive's free-replacement offer for Whistle owners ended 09/30/2025. What happened and what former owners can do: Whistle dog tracker.
Questions people ask
What is the monthly fee for Tractive?
$9 a month on the Basic 1-Year plan, but it's billed as $108 once a year; the US page has no month-to-month plan (tractive.com, 10/09/2026). Premium 1-Year is $120 a year, and the lowest per-month figure, $5, comes from paying $300 for five years of Premium. Tractive Care replacement cover adds $24 a year. Every plan is in the plan table above.
Does Tractive work without a subscription?
No. Tractive's plans FAQ says the built-in SIM's fees "are covered with your subscription," and each tracker needs its own plan. Tractive doesn't describe any feature that works without one. If a monthly bill is the deal-breaker, see GPS dog trackers without a subscription, where the trade-offs are range and live updates.
How far away does Tractive work?
As far as a cellular network reaches: Tractive says the trackers work in over 175 countries with partner coverage, and Basic doesn't include Worldwide Coverage, which is Premium. There's no fixed range in feet. In Treeline Review's test (07/11/2026) service was available about 85% of the time, with gaps under dense tree cover. More trackers compared: best GPS dog collars.
Is Tractive or AirTag better?
For live tracking of a dog that ran off, Tractive is built for the job: it has its own SIM and lists live updates "every 2-3 sec" with a plan. An AirTag isn't in our GPS database, so we don't put numbers on it here.
